Make Salt Cell Great Again! How to Fix: Low Salt - No Flow - Check Cell - Pentair Hayward Jandy

Follow these steps so your salt cell will get a correct salt level reading and restore lights/error codes!
First measure out water in a pitcher or jug with at least 70-75 % water to 20-25% muratic acid, always leave plenty of room for muriatic acid to be added and never add water to acid! Always make sure power is off or disconnected before cleaning salt cell. Safety glasses and gloves recommended.
If you're you are having issues after cleaning your salt cell and making sure both salt cell and pump timers are in sync, insure the salt reading in the pool is 3000-4000ppm, THEN if possible remove cartridge filter and run without it for 15-30 minutes to see if the lights go green. if so replace filter with a high quality name brand filter: unicel, pleatco or the manufacture brand ONLY!

Thank you for simply covering Proper Salt level testing and the Correct way to clean a still serviceable Titanium Cell. This is refreshing, after dealing with so many Shade tree above ground pool owners passing off Damage inducing circuit board bypasses as Repairs, mostly pertaining to Intex. Even those Generators work pretty well - Until cell E.O.L. - and the cost of use/replacement is reasonable for Take Down pools with short life spans. Again, much appreciated Video!

My ic40 always shows a green light for water flow, even when the pump is off. I have replaced the flow sensor. Any ideas on whats causing this?

I did all of that and I still don’t have any readings, 0 parts per million of chlorine,. I went to pinch a penny, and they say the cell is probably bad. For a piece of equipment that cost me $1500 and breaks in less than two years it is not worth it, a bucket of tablets last me a year or more in 10 years is about the same, great video for maintenance.

Thank you for the feedback. How old is the filter cartridge? If it’s past a year it may be worth replacing for better flow. If you want to check before buying remove the filter and run to see if it produces chlorine. You can watch my other video on how to test cell as well. Remember if your chlorine is low you do want to add liquid chlorine to raise it. The cell is best for maintaining a chlorine level not raising from 0. Check an make sure your stabilizer level is atleast a 50. You need it get it working so you can brag to your friends about having a saltwater pool lol please subscribe, happy Pool!

I’ve been cleaning pools for 10+ years and I can tell you these salt cells don’t last long. Especially for what it costs now a days ain’t worth it.

@@jesussaves33 My salt cells last for about 6 to 7 years, with quarterly cleanings. A quick web search shows a brand name Hayward t15 runs $900. So, for $900, I get a chlorinated pool for 6 years. $150 per year for an automated system that runs when I'm there, or on vacation. If I went the off brand cell, I'm looking at $450. That's under $100 a year for an automated chlorine system. I've had a standard chlorine float pool before. Sometimes it over chlorinates and we can't swim, sometimes it under chlorinates and I have to deal with algae. Bottom line, even if it is more expensive, it isn't that much more expensive, and the convenience is worth it. Of course, I've talked to pool cleaners who disagree with me, but then again, my system makes their services unnecessary.

We just replaced our filters, and cleaned the Pentair ic15 cell with 1/3 muriatic acid as usual but the Inspector Cell light is blinking. We ran the diagnostic and it says the cell is at 60% life. Everything else is looking good but seems this means it’s not producing chlorine. Although the diagnostic displayed 60% life used, this is our fourth year with the Cell. Any suggestions, please ?

Ic15 is the smaller of the chlorinators it may be time to replace I would try running it a 100% first to see if it works and you can always test it check out our other salt cell videos

Definitely could be an issue with the filter. Try running the pool without your filter for 10 minutes and see if it clears the error 👍🏻

My intellichlor periodically gives me a Flow error (red light) and the pump shuts off. The pool has plenty of water. The strainer is clear. The filter has been cleaned. The intellichlor has been cleaned. I've replaced the flow switch on the intellichlor. Once I reset the circuit breaker on the control panel, the pump and the intellichlor reset and water flow resumes. This cycle repeats a few times each week. Any suggestions?

If the flow light goes red when the pump stops is what we want that’s good! If the flow is red when it’s running the rpm’s may be too low

Yes we include a monthly filter cleaning and quarterly salt cell cleaning. We have a small charge for the salt cell cleaning to incentivize employees that it’s done every three months, an they are compensated for the extra time it takes.

@@PoolCareWorld ok. Just wondering. We do a quarterly filter, salt cell servicing as a small separate charge. But most of our filters are 4 cartridge filters. The service guys couldn’t finish their route in the same day if they tried to clean filters too.

What area are you located in? If the quad filters are standard in your area then I believe it’s the norm to charge to clean them. In our area in Florida it’s basically single cartridge filters takes 5-10 minutes if done monthly. All the companies in the area include filter cleans in service because it doesn’t take too much time though most other companies just say they’re cleaning it monthly and don’t lol. Also we replace them yearly to make sure they aren’t too gummed up.

What about for Aqua rite that’s reading ‘no flow’ or ‘low salt’ despite having clean filter, good flow, good salt test reading and clean salt cell? These things only last like 4 years max. Definitely should last like 10 years imo. I clean about 7 pools with salt cells and they all start messing up at the same time. It’s insane.

I just fixed my salt cell by taking a small wire brush (a nylon brush for bubble tea straws) scrubbing in between the fins. Now the salt level is reading properly. Hopefully won’t have to replace a 3 year old cell for a while.

Hi! The screen on my salt system was saying HOT. My pool guy told me to change the cell. I changed it and it went to 4900 to 4500 in four days. Is it going to go down or something else is not working? Thanks for your help, it’s greatly appreciated!

4900 to 4500 are you talking about the salt reading in the pool? That’s too high of salt level for most cells. This one is 3200 ppm salt. If the salt level is going down to things could be happening. You may be adding water and it’s diluting it if you are not adding water, your pool may be leaking. If evaporation happens, the salt level is going to increase the only way, the salt level goes down is by those two things.

@@PoolCareWorld Yes, that’s the salt reading. My pool guy told me that it might be the mother board that’s not working. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m gonna follow your advice and add water in the pool and dilute the salt and wait for the numbers to go down and maybe fire my pool guy!!

Don’t fire him lol educate him I need to know what salt cell you have to give any specific advice on it. A few require to be at a higher salt level. Do you know the brand? I would be the most concerned about the salt level dropping. Are you adding a lot of water to the pool?

I learned this week that if the phosphate is too high, the Cell won't generate Chlorine and produce a Check Cell and Low Salt warnings.

Yes true but actually nitrates are normally the culprit for it not working! Nitrates requires dilution, where phosphate can be removed easily with a phosphate remover.

Yeah true if you have them switch to Pentair it’s good for 3-5 years and the cell is the only part needed to replace, electrical part that is. If you’re okay with spending $1500 every 3-5 years so be it!

Check salt levels in pool should be 3200-3400 but every cell is + or - that where it stays solid green light

You can but just as a temporary solution after awhile it will coagulate and make a mess and will need to be wiped clean. Any silicone lube is better off 👍🏻

Vaseline is a petroleum product and will ruin petroleum base o-rings. Except for very few, all pool related o-rings are petroleum base.

Have you tried cleaning the cell an the filter? Also I would try to run the pump with the filter cartridge out and if you get flow the filter needs to be replaced.

I would try everything you can to try and get it to work before thinking about getting a new one! The pentairs last along time you can also replace the flow sensor.

Just know they do say 5 years is the life of the cell if it was running at 100% the whole 6 years it may be worth in buying a new one than putting anymore money in to this one. But let’s try all the other easy fix methods first 👍🏻

Okay you definitely want to supplement additional chlorine until we can get your salt cell running! The flow sensor is what triggers the cell to run or not. In the pentair cells is looks like a flat spring hanging in front of the cell plates.

I would start by cleaning it with a acid solution 1 part acid to 4 parts water and also clean the filter and if it runs for 15 minutes it’s your best bet of it going away! Some Jandy need cleaning monthly if you have it at 100%.

The salt cell? It’s not cheap that’s forsure but anyone getting one needs to know that lol as long as you’re willing to put in the time and money it’s worth it for a homeowner to save trips to the pool store!
