@@laraarias803 It well thanks for asking. I have a 55 gallon tank but I ran into some issues later on with supporting all the water weight without the frame. The width is 12in but without the extra support; the glass was popping out at 13.5 inches in the middle. I had to empty the tank and silcone a quarter inch thick 12x5in glass in the middle of the tank.

Thanks, turned a $9 new 10 gal into rimless today and it came great. Tip for removing the silicone after the rims are off. Use a hair blower and fine steel wool. Start with a blade for the heavy stuff but clean up is a snap with heat and steel wool. Nope, not a scratch, I'm surprised too.

Good video. A flexible plastic pant scraper works even better. I've done this successfully on a 75 gallon and 30 gallon extra tall with no issues so far. The 75g I used a glass center brace that is 8 inches wide. The 30g extra high I was nervous about not bracing because it's so tall. But, I've had no issues for over a year now. I did not remove the bottom trim on either tank though. Only the top.

A couple of things people should note. 1. Do not use that type of box cutter. Use the one that you can really slide the blade out so that you can really get into the corners... if using the box cutter! And if you want to use a putty knife, get the one that is curved on one side going up to a point. Much safer tools. 2. If you want to use a brace like shown in the video, get two pieces of glass. One cut to the outside width of the tank, one to the internal width of the tank. Silicone the two pieces together and press together to ensure that there are no air bubbles showing in the silicone. Once the pieces are stuck together properly, but before the silicone has set, fit the brace into the tank and move it about to ensure that the width is set properly on the top piece. Once everything is in place, wrap some painting masking tape around the brace tightly so that it doesn't move while you are waiting the 24 hours for it to set. Once the silicone is set, trim any excess silicone from around the brace and then silicone it into place. Looks much neater and nicer and is a lot more sturdy.

@dramoth64
@dramoth64 2 жыл бұрын
@@jerml6136 I completely missed the question from way back when. But the answer is depending on the thickness of the glass. 75G is roughly 280 litres, so 10-15mm glass would be best. If you're doing a 75 long, I would definitely use bracing. But if it's a cube shape, you can get away with it being rimless.

Okay the comment section is full of “I broke my tank” comments but here’s something different to make you feel a bit more motivated to do it... I did break my tank a little bit too tho lol but actually it’s not that hard! Taking your time is the key to this! And also it is really cheap to do it, I probably spent like 30 bucks max but because I bought a rotary tool, that helps with the corners A LOT!!! But yeah, just follow the steps, take your time and be careful! Gonna try again now that Petco is having the 1 gallon, 1 dollar sale lol

I removed a Zoo med sliding trim. It was plastic coated foam, so it came off in chunks, but fun to do. I did cut myself on the glass when i went to clean it. So i put electrical tape on the edges. I was going to anyway, as i was trying to fit a new cover on it. so for me it didn't need to be cleaned from the silicone. I only needed the painters knife and tape for tools. The glass did not break at all, but it is a large tank, i would say the same size as the video.

Great video! I so want to do this! My water is exceptionally hard and the rim hides water line. Blades don't even touch it! Bar Keepers Friend works like magic but I only use it in an empty tank. Ideas to remove stains around fish?

Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't this have been made easier with the assistance of a heat gun?-maybe I'm wrong.

I bought a 30 gallon tall, frameless aquarium by Aqueon. It doesn’t have a rim on the top, but it does have it on the bottom. Do you think it would be safe to remove the bottom rim?

I had almost the exact same tank as you, and I realize you said all tanks were different, but this proved to be near impossible.

Great video. I have a question, can the brace be plexiglass?

No! Plexi absorbs moisture & warps.

Where can I get the glass cut? I need 3 pieces for my 55 gallon. I got the tank for free which is amazing but the rim was destroyed and I had to remove it. Please let me know because I’d like to order it pretty soon. Thanks for the video! Great quality!!!

it seemed like the bottom rim leaves a gap under the bottom glass. is that normal? my tank has this sort of rim as well and im scared the bottom can crack.

Kopsu I know this comment was from months ago but did you ever set it up? I’m taking off the rim of my 55 gallon and noticed the gap too. Not sure if I should silicone the gap to be safe.

What about scraping off the silicone on the sides where 2 edges of the glass meet is that ok?

I would really like to do a rimless 5 gallon, but I have a cat. Do you recommend something specific for creating a glass lid? What mechanisms should I use for it to rest on top?

I'm taking the top off of my Fluval Edge 6 gal. Do you think it will make the tank unstable or anything or will it be fine because the tank is so small?
