Yeung Je is incredible. When watching his build videos, pay attention to the tools he uses. Harbor freight and Walmart/Lowe’s. And he makes these incredible tools.

My girlfriend got mad at me, because a couple weeks ago she caught me making a low angle jack plane. She said I'm wasting time and said to just buy one. Then I showed her how much they cost. (btw. please give me the address of this dumpster with large chunks of solid aluminum in them)

Try using a thicker blade, usually low angle jack planes have very thick blades to take care of the problems a chipbreaker would usually solve (tear out and chatter).

Okay, Rex... Great job with this plane!!! I (for one) would probably watch the comparison out of morbid curiosity, whether I "had a dog in the argument" or not about craftsmanship versus actual functionality by design. I like your presentation and energy on these things. I would like to suggest another build, though. JUST food for thought, as I know it's cheaper and more "reachable". What I'm not sure about, is whether it would serve as "functional" for the price and time invested. Take a box-plane, and create an "inlay" for the whole plane, so you can clamp it down into a much larger sole-plate, and still net the sweet results of the low angle, with the stability and control of the larger plane sole and body. You COULD (theoretically of course) add weight to the project (as desired in some planes) by simply drilling holes that can be filled with lead sinkers (fishing tackle) and topped in glue, goop, silicone, or epoxy. I've crafted a "combination" Plane myself with an old Stanley, when I seriously needed the extra sole, so I do know it's possible. A good stable hardwood is essential, and Beech has been my go-to (from advice from old-timers)... BUT I've never personally tried with a simple little box-plane. The hardest part is getting the plane into position so the entire (finished product) sole is dead flat without a lot of fiddling. You don't want to have to put it together (like a kit) and then have to grind away to flatten and true the sole every time, either... or maybe box-planes are cheap enough (in some cases/models) to be sacrificial in the interest of a shop... OR possibly, dedicating ONE box plane (cheap) to this "combination project" could be sufficient IF you left it together permanently. In any case, I thought you might be interested in the idea... for a cheap low-angle alternative. ;o)

Beautiful and practical; very nice indeed. Another nice property of aluminium is that you can melt it with a normal blowtorch & butane/propane mix (if you're patient) so you can in effect weld cut pieces back together again. Several times now I've melted some kitchen foil in a little crucible & used a butter knife to smear it into gaps & joints and it comes out remarkably strong as long as you heat the rest of it as you apply & work fast.

Of course you put time into the handle, it's your primary contact with the tool. The handle is the most important part of any hand tool. A bad handle can mar your experience of even the best tools.

I made a scrub plane to dimension green wood. I used a block plane blade, no chip breaker. I didn't need to worry about the mouth. It is a beast and scallops the wood out quickly. I'm never going to buy a scrub because it works so well. I bet it works better than the cheap stanley in woodworking for humans. How about a build of a scrub as an alternative to the jekyll and hyde for the humans series?

Another great video. I had never heard of a low angle plane before this. Now I can see the benefit of owning one or at least having at go at it.

Well, as an old hang glider pilot, aluminum will oxidize when exposed to air, which is like rusting for iron. It is generally anodyzed, which is an electrical process, and that brings it up to 'aircraft grade' aluminum. With the sanding you did, you would have gone through the anodyzing. I do have a couple of low angle jack planes. For one, I got one of those saw tooth type irons, just to experiment. I really like it. Have you ever tried one of those?

Rex, Don't buy the plane, I would suggest as others have to get one from a friend to test and see how they stand up together and you can offer something to the said friend to help you test the low angle and share a beer over the experience. Keep up the great work and your home made one is really inspiring to see. I love to see home made things that are built to last and not just buy and toss out. I know some guys you might like to get in touch with. the crew are Pask makes (KZfaqr), Samari Carpenter (another KZfaqr) and a few others I hooked up a few years back and they might be up for this challenge. I too love the blending of materials in a build as it makes it look so next level.

Would love to see the comparison. Part of the fun for me is building jigs and tools to solve problems quickly/cheaply without buying new tools. That said, I think you should borrow a low angle jack for the comparison video. 200 bucks at Home Depot isn't worth it for something you dont really want. Might make a cool cross over video with some of the other cats on youtube depending on who you borrow from.

You will love the Stanley lo angle. Camfore the corners of the iron and it works perfect for Avery job I have used it on.

I would definitely watch that video. One of the things that always stops me from making my own tools is I always feel like I'd pay way too much in time and materials to get something that doesn't work nearly as good as what I could buy for the same money. But that is one sexy plane!

A no 62 low angle bevel up plane (Stanley old and new, Lie Nielsen, Veritas) is a specialty plane and is good for what it was made for (end grain). It is just a giant low angle block plane. However, while it is capable (moderately) of doing general planing it was never made for general work and cannot compete with a standard bevel down bench plane because it is missing a chip breaker. No other plane feature can compete with a chip breaker when it comes to avoiding or minimizing tear out. While a tight mouth can help, it is nowhere near as important as a chip breaker. While Lie Nielsen and Veritas planes are VERY good and built to very tight tolerances, they have a hard time competing (price wise) with quality made standard bevel down older Stanley bench planes. They have a strong incentive to advertise low angle bevel up planes as the best all around plane because a new and better made Lie Nielsen or Veritas low angle bevel up plane does not cost too much more than an older Stanley No 62 (and especially no 64). The orignial no 62 was not produced in great numbers because it was never meant or advertised to be anything but a specialty plane for end grain such as butcher blocks. In addition, many of the older no. 62's a broken because of weakness at the mouth. Due to the low numbers, the cost of an original 62 is quite high which makes it easier veritas and lie nielsen to tout buying a new plane. While nice, there nothing particularly special about these planes other than a fad.

Would def love to see yours vs the real thing. Outside of alum staining oak, my guess is you're pretty close to them on everything but maybe life of the tool.

If you buy the Stanley #62, shop around, because the prices are all over the place. Home Depot seems to have the best price now. I've been reading reviews, and it seems that they've had quite a few issues, in recent years, with the casting quality and QC being sub par. I read good things about the Taytools (Taylor Toolworks) version. I haven't found many reviews, though. I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the Stanley and the Taytools #62s. I realize that would be cost prohibitive for you, though.

Rex, now you have my full suport for making a low angl. Plane. Next time look for 7075 t6 or better yet some 6061 t3 to t6 temper. The adjutment method you use is the best part.

Worth to mention that low angle planes work great with a 25° on shooting board/endgrain task for smoothing I strongly suggest to put on a 38° degrees blade anyway, this is a great built. cheers from Italy alberto

My first thought is that I don't think anyone else has ever done such a comparison so heck yeah we want to see that. Also I am pretty sure there are lots of Woodworkers like me, who may have bought one or two planes in a junk pile from a flea market, but otherwise managed to score all their planes for free... So speaking for all of us I want to see this just to be able to know if I should ever lay down actual cash for a new plane.

I am really interested in watching the awesome-cheap-ass low angle plane vs the stanley, i also have access to an unusually hard wood, so I might try to see if I can make an entire low angle plane out of it

The other thing Id love to see, apart from the comparison with a commercial version, is make yourself a high bevel blade to go along with the first one (I see a lot of people recommend a high angle grind to help with tear out, vs the low/standard angle for end grain) and see if you feel the versatility gets better being able to swap blades.

Rex. That's a lovely plane. My thinking is that if it is only ever used for end planing on a shooting board, it is more than worth the cost of making it, in comparison to buying an expensive proprietary low angle plane. You've done a good job there.

When I worked on single seat aerobatic aircraft, made with lots of wood and composite parts, we mixed WEST epoxy on aluminum because it popped right off after it cured, ready to be used again. If I have to use epoxy, it is never the 5 Minute variety. Another of my hobbies is RC modeling. I've learned that 5 minute ages very poorly in that it gets rubbery and the bond fails after several years. I have not observed 15 minute and slower epoxies doing that.

I will research the cost of hard anodized aluminum channel. It will not stain wood and perhaps look for a much more resiliant alloy as well. Even the ordinance grade aluminum alloys can be easily worked with wood working tools. A stiffer harder aluminum alloy which has been hard anodized would offer a more durable tool. I too would like to see a comparison with the Stanley Low Angle Jack Plane.

I was thinking on buying and bringing a Stanley low angle plane in my next vacation travel to USA because here in Argentina it's impossible to get one. It will be awesome to see the video of the comparation from yours and the Stanley cheap one, so to make sure of buying one or not if it's not that good.

I have an idea of using a block of wood and a "spoon" carving tool to make a "roundover plane" - a plane for cutting the sharp corners off of wood in a round shape instead of a standard 45 chamfer. My questions: 1) Is it worth the time and effort, or should I just improve my proficiency with rasps, files,sandpaper, etc? 2) Is oak a good choice for a plane body (my free options are Oak, pine, chestnut, and maybe pecan) because these are trees which do or used to grow on my property.

You could use a piece of steel channel instead of aluminum too.

Since the angle of the bevel up blade is 35 degrees (15 degrees for the bed and 30 degrees for the angle of the blade bevel) have you ever considered making a plane with a 30 degree bed and using a bevel down blade. That would give you an even lower blade angle than a 15 degree bed angle with a 30 degree bevel on the blade.

Im planning on making a jack plane in a similar style, i think ill try and find some steel channel, instead of aluminium, due to the marks it makes on the wood though.

i know you have done hand plane shootouts and found one for wood working for humans, have you ever considered the buck brand planes, i got one and from my 0 experience in use, i was able to with your instructions easily use there block plane to finish normal cuts but ive been using it to flat my maple log cut to make a mallet and impressively well its gone. and im using it out of the box, sharpening and flat materials are still on the way,

Axminster is probably the “cheapest” next option. At least it was for me. I got mine for the low low price of $145 on sale. Plus shipping ($10ish?). Not having any idea what I was going to get, I was surprised. it arrived with a good 25/30 dual bevel, flat and square (not curved at all), and honestly I simply polished it with my honing paper before using it. After slight fiddling my first shaving was silk. Its amazing but honestly I wish there was a cheaper option I felt was viable. I didnt have the money to buy a cheap plane and have it not work. Going too cheap was... too risky. Id love to see what you do with the stanley. You making this was fun to watch. How viable would .25in steel be in place of the aluminum if I had a bit of scrap laying around? (I’ve not worked steel before. Now that Ive typed that out loud it sounds dumb...but still. How hard could it really be?)
