In this project I will show you how to create a portable retro game console that can also be used as a Windows 10 tablet. It will consist of a 7" HDMI LCD with touchscreen, a LattePanda SBC, a USB Type C PD power PCB and a few more complementary components. When running a game, a common 72Wh powerbank can power the console for about 8 hours. Let's get started!

I am currently planning a more powerful version of this project with analog sticks and the ability to use PlayStation Now. So if you got ideas for improvements then let me know :-)
@deadbird99
@deadbird99 4 жыл бұрын
You really did an amazing job! Some ways of improvements: - add a battery and BMS - put the last screws (10:58) at the bottom - to save space (I mean: a LOT of space) you can desolder some of the ports such as the two USB-A. I bet you can save 1.5cm of overall thickness - about the button: if you plan on adding a directional cross instead of four buttons, take a look a Jiri Praus' brass Gameboy. There are a some ideas you could steal from his design. - one last: please, please use silicon wire 😂 That's all I have in mind for the moment. But again, this is an amazing project. I can't wait to see version 2! And for sure I will build mine 👍🏻 PS: "but how the heck can he post comments a week before the video is released???" comments incoming 😁

First off, love the console. I think in terms of the design it could be more "comfortable" I know I am just watching it and haven't actually held it but I think more curved edges (similar to the Vita and psp) and make sure to place the analog sticks at a diagonal from the buttons because that's more comfortable for thumbs to move (diagonally) rather than up and down which is a thing people find especially annoying about the switch. (Also looks like it has space for more buttons overall?? idk) I think some of Ben Hecks portables are a good reference for nice designs. Looks awesome, good luck with the next version

This is perfect! I had just started planning a very similar build using a 7" HDMI display, a Pi 4 and Teensy for game controller inputs and I wasn't sure where to get a proper HDMI cable and then you post this video! I'm going to be integrating a Blackberry trackball into mine which will connect as a USB HID device and be used as the mouse with shoulder buttons "I hope" for left and right click, as well as a third button to latch and unlatch scroll wheel functionality. Luckily somebody already made all of he teensy code for that. Maybe this is something you could add to the next iteration of your project. I'm also hoping to integrate a small wireless keyboard, initially I had planned to make a space inside the case where it could be stored but not seeing something similar all put together I don't think that's such a great idea. I am interested to see how you are going to approach making this completely portable. I'm planning to get a flat LiPo pack, as large as I can fit in the case to maximize battery life and will be digging through your videos to find an appropriate power distribution and charging circuit because I'm clearly going to need something that can do better than 1 amp. I hope you have something for that already. I'm going to be using a display I already have that is designed to operate at 12 - 40 VDC so you probably already know what buck converter I'll be bypassing :) Great work as always man.

I would love to see him take this to the next level, and make this so much more well rounded, and easier to use by doing one or two of the following: Get proper control of the backlight(not just by using the monitors OSD/controls, but a descrete adjustment or maybe even get it to work with the windows stock system screen management) I would certainly offer up a good bounty to see this done. And two getting windows to read in the values for the battery to to windows "fuel" gauge to show it what the battery charge is as if it was a legitimate laptop, something I have spent hundreds of dollars and hours trying to do, unseccesfully a while back.

As a second version you can desolder the GPIO, RJ-45 and other big components and solder wires to them directly, that way you can make the device a bit slimmer. Also you can redesign the shape the left and right back sides of the device so that its more like a controller (comfortable).

The ADC from the arduino might have a too low resolution for a decent oscilloscope.

The project is so fun to make, and I have been planning to so this exact same project since the LATTEPANDA has been out, but after much more thinking, I had to abandon the idea ‘cuz the budget didn’t make any since. It’d cost around $300-$400 to build the system, meanwhile I can buy a well spec’d used laptop with a great battery and just use that for less than half the price (in my case, bigger didn’t mean a problem). I’d say the project would’ve been better in terms of costs if a RaspberryPi 4 was used instead, you really don’t need a windows machine for retroarch. As always, great and well made video scott! Well done.

Great video! If you just need 5V/3A you can even build this without a dedicated USB-PD PCB. The USB-C standard allows for drawing up to 3A from a compatible power supply. Just hook up a 5.1kOhm pulldown resistor between CC and the GND pin and if the voltage over it is about 1.5V you can easily draw 3A from the power supply.

Pretty awesome. I'm surprised you didn't put the battery bank within the case, or use one of those battery controllers to integrate a power source into it, this way it'd be a great portable gaming rig (for retro games), and heck, with a wireless keyboard and mouse, you could use it as a tiny laptop if you need.
