Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we are going to talk about an insane chapter in medical history where a doctor sold a procedure, the lobotomy, as if it were an infomercial. For a low, low price, this idiot promised to solve all your mental illnesses. He just has to stick this ice pick in your brain.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find the Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

When you think about it, talking history is essentially gossip. She said/he said/they said, a whole mix of opinions and ideas, ripe for us to tear apart and discuss. That's what makes history awesome.

Do one on shock therapy! My great grandmother had to have shock therapy treatments while she was pregnant. Everyone thought she was schizophrenic when really she had 5 kids at home and my great grandfather walked out with another woman, while she was 6 months pregnant. She then was put into a psych unit for her postpartum. She was basically told she was insane

My mother was pregnant with me when she received numerous ECT's back in the 1950's. Most of my life I have struggled with emotional regulation and quirky tics but managed to control them eventually, except when I am profoundly stressed out. I have often wondered if my prenatal ECT caused these problems.

speaking of Kennedy, her life started in tragedy. Her mother went into labor, and she tried to deliver the baby, but the nurses in the hospital told her to close her legs because a doctor wasn't available to help with the birth. So the poor baby was in the birth canal for 2 hours before a doctor arrived, and had severe brain damage due to oxygen depletion. The reason she was a "rebel" in the first place...brain damage

I feel like Joey suddenly jumping in and speaking loudly killed the immersion of the podcast unfortunately. I play this as I paint and find it calming and fascinating. Whenever he would appear I would zoom to the screen and lose my head space, only for comments that don't really add to whatever you were saying. I understand it was possibly for comic relief but personally did not find it funny and feel like this podcast already has a perfect balance of seriousness and lightheartedness with just Bailey alone.

Okay so I worked at a state hospital in Warren, PA and they had this room in a building on the grounds where they would do crazy things to these patients that were "crazy” and there were student desks all around the table for students to observe these procedures. They closed the building down, but I've gone up there and the floors are still stained red from the blood. They had jars of body parts and baby fetuses in formaldehyde in another room...I can't imagine the things some of the patients went through back in the day. And you could literally just get dropped off there for a lifetime stay if your family or husband didn't want to deal with you and you weren't truly crazy either. They would slam these people with meds that turned them into completely different people with adverse effects that are just horrible.

As a dude, I know absolutely nothing about makeup beyond watching my mom apply it when I was a kid, watching girls I have dated do their makeup, and now my daughter do hers... I have always enjoyed the conversations with them as they did their makeup, as the distraction seems to allow for a more open and honest dialog... I don't know anything about makeup, but I can appreciate the talent and artistry, the amazing transformations created... I recently found your channel and watched because of the "mysteries", enjoying the delivery of the stories you present in your own unique way, your relaxed, sassy, playful personality, but found myself enjoying the makeup portion as well, as it takes me back to a time of meaningful conversations with the women in my life that I love....

My great uncle had a botched lobotomy when he was just a child. They did it to cure his seizures but all it did was left him disfigured and forever stuck in the mind of a small child. He was the sweetest person though.

That's so sad but unfortunately you cant even be upset or blame the parents, they trusted the doctors and what they felt would work best, they were dishonest about the statistics of the possible outcome and only showed those that were successful so parents of course wanted to help their children anyway they could and trust doctors to be honest about all the possible outcomes. I'm sure parents that opted to have it done on their kids ended up carrying a ton of guilt and sadness after seeing the bad outcome then later discovering the doctors lied and hid things, I'd feel awful for trusting a doctor and destroying my child.

Melancholia is another word for depression. My grandad's mother had severe anxiety her entire life and ended up having to have electroshock treatment for years. Having gone through regular therapy myself, part of me always wonders how she would have been had someone actually taken the time to listen to her.

I found this one really interesting. Just finished a psychology class where we discussed brain surgery. One in particular is severing the links between the two half’s of the brain. This helps with seizures but it crazy because many people have benefited from this kind of “experiment” but so many more did not.
