French Mattresses are a lovely way to create extra bespoke cushioning for window seats, day beds, benches and occasional furniture for your interior in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms etc. The thickness and buttoning depth can vary to give different effect.
This video shows start to finish making of a traditional buttoned French Mattress using a beautiful traditional woven cotton ticking stripe in smoke colour from Ian Mankin. Rather than standard covered buttons that are hard and may be uncomfortable, I've used a more traditional tufted button method using a gathered circle of fabric.
The mattress itself is made from foam, wrapped in polyster wadding and has has a feather topper to give a weightier for authentic feel.

Absolutely wonderful. I could watch you all day! I know we are supposed to be obsolete as a species, but I'd like to see a robot make a bespoke French mattress!

Ha ha... I bet the robot wouldn't have lost their big upholstery needle and had to struggle with a bodkin and pliers 😂

I loved watching this. I made one too, but not with the feather topper how lovely and soft. Gorgeous stitch work. I learnt some extra tips from watching yours.

Thanks Lara. Yes the feather makes quite a difference and you can vary the thickness of it of course. I made a super sloppy one once with just fathers. X

I wonder why you wouldn't line up the short edges with the same pinstripe, and sew the four pieces (two long/two short) so that it isn't distracting...and not much more work?
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 3 ай бұрын
I think you mean to have the 2 end pieces with the stripe running horizontally and the front and back pieces vertically. Traditionally, all the side pieces are made with the mattress ticking stripe orientated vertically. This is for a few reasons; it's what looks the best, it's traditional and also because the mattress edge stitching creates vertical impressions in the fabric, so orientating some of it horizontally would be jarring. Furthermore, to use 4 separate pieces would require a join at each corner, something that's usually avoided to give a more professional look and to reduce bulk but mostly because each join would be stripes joined at different orientations. Something, I would argue, would be more distracting than the traditional way shown in the video.

Really lovely! I’m a upholsterer and can appreciate the tremendous amount of work that goes into this cushion. And the sore fingers! I’m curious about two things. The miter on the corners, would love to see a demonstration on your method. Also, do you add an allowance to the cushion size to make up for drawing in at the edges? Btw, love those tufted buttons! Thank you for you video. ❤

How do you calculate for take up?
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
It very much depends on what, if anything, the foam is wrapped in or whether it has a feather topper etc. It also depends on how tight you want the cover to be so it's a hard question to answer I'm afraid. The best I can suggest is to prepare your foam first and then measure for the size of cover you want allowing roughly half an inch on all sides for a seam allowance.
