From a painter with decades of experience blue tape is the absolutely wrong tape to be using! Try the 3M 2040 tape. The higher the numbers the less tack it has.

You hit on a key point that almost every other video leaves out .... using a light coat of shellac on the edges where the dye meets the body in order to prevent runs in that later finishing stages. A great tip!

Beautiful finish. Just wondering, did you rub true oil on the flame top of the guitar after you'd done the other finishes? Also, why rub down the guitar with 1200 grit and not say 2000 grit? Looks amazing as is but as im new to this and deciding what finish to use and how to do it any help would be fantastic.... thanks.

Beautiful color! Do you always need to use a filler? I know you said you weren't crazy about the one you were using so what type is recommended? What brand of stain did you use? Only one coat? Also did you use any different colors around the edges or just a thicker coating of the same stain. Thank you

I'm not sure I understood : shellac then tru-oil ? Then sanding, and last but not least scratch remover??
@CranmerGuitars
@CranmerGuitars 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you got it. Shellac as a base coat, tru oil top coat and t-cut and super nico as a buffing compound
@acellett
@acellett 2 жыл бұрын
@@CranmerGuitars could you apply the Tru Oil directly to the stained top of the guitar after it dries without any shellac? or would it make the dye run or move around? I thought Tru Oil worked by penetrating the wood? Will it adhere to the shellac long term? I'm building a guitar and want to water base stain the top, but was unsure if I had to apply some type of coat or sanding sealer prior to the tru oil

What size cove bit (assuming you used a cove bit) for the dish outs for the controls? Or did you carve those by hand too? Thanks.
@CranmerGuitars
@CranmerGuitars 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, I ground a curve into a spade bit and drilled out the holes on the drill press. I wasn't too impressed with the results, so I'd probably use a cove bit next time

Do you have to fill the grain? I’m gonna build another guitar soon, and I’d like to have open grain because I like the feel of it instead of a hard lacquer. Does it depend on the wood type?

Guitars are meant to ring or at least resonate. This epoxy finish kills it all and looks very pretty but very China made.
@stripedpants1668
@stripedpants1668 8 ай бұрын
Realistically that makes no noticeable difference in the sound of an electric guitar. Besides, China makes some pretty good guitars now a-days.
