I sometimes make flutes from the stalk of a plant called a "desert spoon," that blooms in the same fashion by growing the stalk out of the middle of the yucca-like plant. I leave as much of the natural texture on the outside of the stalk as possible, sometimes flattening the area for the playing holes. I split the stalks with a band saw, carve out the inside, then glue the halves back together. It is nice to be able to make flutes out of something that grows here in our area (Nevada, near Death Valley).

Wonderful job! I learn a lot from your videos. Thank You!! I've made a few PVC flutes and whistles thanks to all the info you are willing to share with us. It's a fun way to pass some time. As I told you on other social media, I designed and printed an eagle whistle and printed it on a 3D printer based on your designs. Don't ever let the naysayers bring you down. Tools are there for us to use and enhance our abilities, not detract from them. I can imagine someone ages ago saying that something is not handmade because the craftsman used a rock as a tool. LOL!!

Hi, Charlie: Enrique Cancino here admiring your work once again. You have proven to me, at least, that a beautiful Native American flute can be made successfully from just about any material, as long as you use some judgement in the choice of material to begin with. Happy New Year to you and yours and we'll stay in touch!

Not to clog your comment line up, but i tried to make a flute in similar fashion as yours, except I cut it in half and carved it out with a carving tool, then glued it back together. After not getting ANY note, only air out of it, I put it aside for a couple of years trying to figure out what went wrong. A couple of weeks ago I started working on it again, and made great progress, working on the sound/air track, block, ramp shape etc.... it's not in tune yet, but my Redwood flute does play. My lowest note is most clear, and soothing ... Thanks again for teaching us. God bless you.

This was a very interesting video! Thank you so much! All my best wishes and hope’s for the coming New Year! : ) Have you ever made flutes from sunflower stalks or even okra or eggplant stalks? If you have grown sunflowers, especially those that produce larger heads to harvest the seeds, you know those stalks get tall and are a larger diameter. I think I have a flute made from a sunflower stalk. Many of my flutes I have not played in a long time, much less looked at them. (Yes, my bad!) Once the stalk is cut and allowed to dry it leaves a pretty sturdy piece of material that also has a soft center. Okra, especially those varieties that grow taller, can almost become tree-like in appearance and sturdiness. They also have a soft center. Well nurtured eggplants can grown reasonably tall and also produce a nice stalk, but I do not recall what their center is like. But I would also assume it has a soft center. If you are fortunate to find a reasonably straight Mexican Elder tree limb of a workable diameter, it has an even larger soft center that can be hollowed. These might be interesting to explore. : ) Now if you do choose to explore these, they all have a unique character that might not survive your round sanding machine. These might be a totally by hand build. I hope you do give these a try. With your unique skills, talents and knowledge of the old ways, I think the elders would be pleased with your creations. : )

Yes, one of the oldest videos on this channel is a sunflower stalk flute. Tobacco stalks, corn stalks and many other materials make great old style flutes. We'll actually be making another video on that soon. No, they would not survive the sander. It would be stupid to try. You might like to check out some of the many other videos on unique materials and complete hand made flutes 😃

Hokey smokes, that's a heck of a sander. Lol. Haven't seen that one before, very cool. Love that lathe. What about marking the bit or measuring and boring it just so much from each end but not all the way through, and leaving a part undrilled to serve as the natural plug instead of having to glue one in?
