Making A Free Pallet Wood Picket Fence

I am building a picket fence out of pallet wood which I got for free. This is quite simple really and the cost is zero.
To make a picket fence out of pallet wood all you need is a circular saw. I choose which side of the pallet is the best to keep. The split or cracked boards go down, towards the ground.
I make a cut all the way across the top side along one of the frame boards. Then turn the pallet over.
Next I cut along the middle frame piece on the bottom side of the pallet.
This separates the pallet into two pieces. The larger piece is now ready to be cut into the picket fence look. I simply use my circular saw and make angled cuts on top of each board.
Stand up the pallet with the spikes upwards and it looks like a picket fence.
I am using 3 foot long metal stakes pounded into the ground to support my homemade pallet wood picket fence. Baling wire holds the pallets to the stakes.
This is very simple and easy to make.
My only problem is that I got about 100 free pallets last year but most are broken up or non standard sizes. This makes sorting through the pallets the most time consuming part of the job.
If you have a load of standard sized pallets - or all the same size anyway - then your job would go much faster.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

A terrific idea. I have been breaking up pallets in order to make a picket fence but this will save me loads of time and splinters! The centre support gives as many have suggested a place for plants and could incorporate a vertical planter for herbs, strawberries, etc.

Looks really good, I'm in process of doing exact same thing. I put the flat side on the outside so it would be what people would see if driving into the farm. I'm debating on doing entire 6 acres in them because its free and they look just as good as the wooden section you can buy for 25 dollars. I also fought the idea of the angle cuts and decided to do the pickets because they serve a purpose which is to allow water to run down instead of sitting and rotting wood. I like it,

It is a good idea, as a way to use old pallets, Troy. It looks nice, but I worry about it lasting, or even keeping the chickens out. I am never critical of you, because I enjoy watching your videos, and it is not in my nature to criticize. I know there are all sorts of factors that go into what you do, but so much is half done. A new project pops up half way through another. You are like me in this way. You are highly intelligent, and you have a constantly moving mind. This is just my opinion. I would like to see a completed roof on the house, first thing. I don't want to see what you have worked so hard on be left at risk. Don't chance another winter with a half tar paper roof. I will always watch, and I appreciate all you share. God bless.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 жыл бұрын
Nate Chung I am talking to Chris about helping with the roof. I have not had any guest workers this year and I will not work on a roof in the woods alone in case something happens. Breaking my rib with the garden tractor made me really think about that. What if I had been trapped there? Anyway this is part of the overall fence project.

The Do It Yourself World Before starting this shouldn't you finish the roof or siding on the house while the weather is good? Also I would think of spending (at least) 20-30 minutes in the cool evening stacking firewood. Better to prep than cutting dead trees in the snow like last year.

The Long Project While the weather is good? It rains here just about every day. Not all day but it rains a lot now. Its the rainy season. And I am not going up there alone. I have had no guest helpers this year. After tipping the garden tractor over on myself and breaking my rib out in the woods alone, I am not going to do the same on the roof and risk falling. Out here alone, nobody would know for days. I am talking to Chris about helping on the roof one day. He may help out.

Now we see where good planing goes a long way to making life easier. Still Troy does it the hard way so others don't and we should not mine if we are a little behind Troy if we do this ourselves. The first always make it the hard way, so others might have it a little easier. I still cringe on Troy's projects being all over the place, but than when creativity hits he goes with it.

Given that they are just resting on the ground and subject to water, rot, termites and whatever, wouldn't it be better to treat/paint the wood first or set it on rocks to keep it of the ground. Or would all that extra effort not be worthwhile and easier to replace them every few years when they start falling apart ?

McNeely Joe It's Troy's project, thus he needs no excuses. People can disagree with his reason for something, but that doesn't make it an excuse. ..just the basis for his choice. For example, your idea for cutting on the truck gate isn't wrong...but no excuse is necessary not to do that. I know I would not cut on the tail gate...first because I couldn't lift the pallets up there, but I could cut them on the ground. ..second because once up there they need to be moved multiple times for the cutting, which also wouldn't work for me. But, that's just me...not an excuse, I just wouldn't/couldn't use a tail gate to cut down big pallets. What I would do actually is stack 4 or 5 pallets up as a work surface. ..but that's just me because I am not a fan of working down low. Doesn't make Troy's way wrong, just different than yours or mine.

Mary Cox Another thought, while we are on the subject. Troy's house gets a lot of solar heat from the sun during the day and it is extremely well insulated. I am thinking that he needs much less wood than most people think to heat his home. Most people who use wood heat have much larger, draftier and less well insulated spaces to heat.

Some of those boards are spaced awful wide, the chickens and/or critters will be able to walk though with no trouble. Are you planning to put chicken wire on them? if so you can install the wire fencing 2 inches above ground level and attached to the boards and then electrify the wire fencing on the pallets, as it is naturally insulated unless it gets really saturated from rain or snow.
