In this video I am making a handmade wallet at my workshop. The wallet is made from llama hide and is entirely hand stitched. If you would like to make one my pattern and tutorial are available to buy from the link above :)
●▬▬▬▬▬๑♫♫๑▬▬▬▬▬▬●
The music is Strauss' Blue Danube followed by Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers, both renditions from KZfaq's royalty free music library.

The Redditors seem angry (as usual) that this wallet isn't for sale for $50. There's about $50 in materials in it so what's my time worth? Nothing? There is a lot of work involved in an item like this which isn't conveyed by a short video when it's edited down, they take a long time to make.

***** Don't worry, it is painfully obvious how much effort goes into each of these. The quality of your products shines through.

***** I have to say I love how you combine great music but also include the working sounds of you producing your wallet :) it makes it very enjoyable to watch. This is a high quality product and the price should reflect this, its a world market (I am in Australia) price the items to reflect the quality, you wont attract the market segment that wants a cheap product but you will attract those who want a premium product :)

***** Great job Ian! Very nice! When I first started watching your video, I was thinking to myself "awesome, another great video from Ian showing how I can start making wallets and selling them!" Then I watched the video - way too much labor for me! :) I didn't see what you're charging for the wallets, but I'm sure it's a fair price. My nemesis (a local maker that always seems to start making something I had been planning on making, but haven't gotten around to it yet) charges $115 for a bi-fold wallet, un-lined, machine sewn, with exposed edges. Much less work, but he seems to sell a lot of them. Videos like this are precisely what is needed to convey to customers exactly what it takes to build a quality product. I did a similar thing when I first started selling leather holsters. Customers watched my video and eventually decided it took too many tools and way too much time to build it themselves, so they hired me to build one for them. Very cool use of the little woodworking plane to skive the edges. I will have to try that! And the little edge scraper to rough up the grain side - super cool!

While I prefer my wallet to have burnished edges and to be unlined, that all preference and doesn't reflect how wonderful this piece is. I respect when people can create something so lovely and you can tell how much time and care went into making this. I applaud you, your skill set, and for sharing it with others. Keep up the great work!

***** Thats awesome. You have a really serious setup so I'm not surprised. The stacked leather after burnishing reminds me of a closed book. Its a little detail that generates a nice feeling. Thats what its all about right?

so beautiful , handmade wallets rocks ,they can stay with you for ages ,my grandfather gave me his handmade leather wallet that he bought in the 1940s from Italy ,the leather looks so vintage and it looks very new from the inside ,i use it everyday , the thing is that some people doesn't understand that the materials that are used in these things are high quality materials and that this kind of things will stay with you forever ! i bought many cheap wallets ,they last for a month then the whole wallet starts to fall apart ! thanks for the video ,you are very talented ! and i love the music in this video !

That reminds me of my grandfather, he did this for a living. He had a little workshop here in germany with 5 people that produced leather pouches in the 80s but because of the china market he had to close. I still have some samples and i sometimes helped him to press in buttons with that little machine : ) I also remember that hot iron thing but he used more like a petrolium lamp to keep them hot or something like that. And that white glue, he had the same. We called rubber milk. Of course the stichting was done with machines, two older women did it back then. It was more like mass producing but in small charges.

many people are not used to the quality of hand made product , they feel if they purchase something for 20 bucks that was made in a china sweat shop they made a good deal and if it lasts a couple years before it falls apart they just spend the 25 dollars and purchase the same on so out of 20 year spent 200 or more dollars on wallets instead of one that would last them a life time , this is the mentality of most it a throw away world . up till a couple years ago i still had my grandfathers wallet that was made for him by a leather crafter ,this was made back in 1961 and after I came in to possession of it threw my time I had to re-lace it twice any good hand made leather wallet is worth 100 to 200 bucks compared to that you purchase in wall mart or K-Mart ,, your wallet what you have invested easy 125.00 or better and I am not insulting you one bit , nice wallet ,

I am watchmaker. Actually i am machinist, but i work as automechanic. I bought watchmaker's lathe back when i didn't have enough money for real lathe. Then it got interesting. I started making "watches" around 5 years ago. Obviously they were really bad, usually not working or not keeping time well. But i practised. Now,altrough i make functioning watches that look ok,i don't sell them because i have same problem as you. I can't sell the watch for 100$ if my material is worth 100$. So i rarely make watches now. I make a few pieces a year, which are either gifted or going in my collection. I still live off servicing watches, but since smart watches became trend,i don't have that much customers. People either bring me cheap chinese quartz watches that are not worth fixing or they bring me smartwatches. You can know that i appriciate your work, and i would buy one of your wallets only if my country didn't have such fucked up shipping system. Even if they didn't keep the wallet on border, they would give me 20% tax on luxurious item and plus shipping tax. So if i ever come across the pond, you have a customer.

Really enjoy watching these being made. I can see you really put time and love into your pieces... Please don't think I am trying to detract from your skill, but one tiny change I would have made is the fold on the corner... I know it adds extra time, and a huge amount of faff... but the corners look so much better in my opinion if they are pleated rather than cut square. Please please don't take this as anything other than a comment. I love your folding machine too!
