The last mod: the shredder itself spins too fast. You can reduce the gear ratios and probably get double the torque. It shouldn't have problem cutting through the thick bottle then.

wow, that shredder is a dragster, holy moly! im seeing lots of videos from diy shredders, im founding out that plastic (im looking for to smash hdpe) need raw torque to bend while shred, so the inside gears look thicker and runs slower. thank you for sharing your experiment!

I would still gear it even lower as it is still spinning the teeth too fast, the sprocket on the motor is fine but I would put a bigger sprocket on the transmission, this will increase your torque and possibly give you enough power to crush even the thick threaded bottle tops.

Fantastic work, I’ve got a paper shredder specifically for this. It too has plastic cogs which is why it is broken. However, I am going to try the motor from a blender and a similar bike chain set up.

Its the motor and gears, you'd be surprised how effective "dinky" /tiny blades are

This is nice, I don't want to crap on your project but, don't put the caps with it, HDPE has different properties from PET and that may cause problems on the printer, they can't handle it very well

For about $160 you can get a 12v 1.5hp give or take 90:1 Motor with built on gear box for 18 wheeler dump trailers for their tarp roll ups. That’s what I used on mine

You may be able to alieviate some of the issues with a heavy flywheel, and a clutch system to connect it to the motor

Instead of cutting that jammed plastic, you could've either changed the polarity of the motor and run or just turned the driving gear reverse. I'm glad that you're not injured through the cutting process. ^_^

The blades in the 10 sheet paper shredder seem do the job! Maybe you just need more power on the motor side which is good.

Great video.. I need a shredder too.. that one is a good one.. I think if you put a bigger gear in the motor the shredder will spin slower but more powerful.. do you know what I mean? I hope my advice can help you.. thx for sharing..

Those thick pet bottles I found I need 7.5hp. To process.

preheating the thicker parts of the bottles might make them soft enough to process

I'm glad you got your shredder working but you need to be more mindful of the type of plastics you shred together. The HDPE caps and the PET bottles cannot be mixed and remelted together because of the fact that they arent the same plastic.

Awesome shredder! Please add the specs of the motor to the video description. I imagine with that motor you could take the wiper motor out of the loop completely? All it is doing by the end of the video is serving as a reduction gearbox, maybe it's for the best it's left in the loop? Taking a paper shredder to the extreme. I bought a paper shredder and motor because of this video. Eventually I want to make an aluminum can shredder but without the right motor it's a pointless endeavor. Your video showed me that going for more torque and power is the answer. In the mean time I'm pre-processing like you did. It's a pain. Thank you for the awesome video and insights.

You have SO much potential to improve torque - that speed is completely unnecessary.

You should have used the plastic cogs to cast alloy ones.

It's not really all the same PET has fumes that can hurt you

Why not just turn the motor shaft to get it unstuck?

Try a sun jo electric wood chipper then put that semi-shredded plastic into your modified paper shredder .

the bottles and the caps are two different types of plastic.... number 1 polyethylene terephthalate which is a clear plastic and number 2 high-density polyethylene plastic, they have totally properties. you should have separated the caps from the water bottles before you shredded them.

Be Careful! That thing looks like it would trim your finger nails all the way to your elbows!

you need tons more power so no manual preprocessing required ;)
