I love the classic pronged cross cut paper shredder blade design this is the “EUGH holy crap” more gnarly looking version of that all it needs is the double edge cut into the blades

Fantastic shredder project, great commentary, well documented, and entertaining too. Well done 👍

Really good work. Surprised by your preference for stainless. You'll find the spec for hardox in the original spec is significantly better than stainless. If you've got parts that are working, corrosion isn't going to be a major concern, plus you can weld hardox like mild steel, it's crazy tough, no tricky distortion, no blunt cutting faces.

update. I tried that configuration. yes it works, but it was easier to have some 10mm steel laser cut vs doubling up the thinner parts.

Perhaps having two meshing shredders feeding the material between them? What about making blades with interchangeable carbide cutters, such as those used on lathes?

Looks like you need alot of torque for that. What about a chipper with flailing arms or lawn mower blade where it hits it like a bat & both brut strike force & repeated blade cuts chop it down

ok i understand that the geared systems are smaller and more robust over time but a cheaper and easy speed and torque setup would be to use belts and pulleys , a couple of double pulleys on pillow block shafts and you can get your gear reduction and keep a lot of torque
@SciCynicalInventing
@SciCynicalInventing 6 ай бұрын
I agree with you, and in fact the slipping in the belts could help prevent any serious damage to the shredder as well. But my criteria was that it be as compact as possible and a belt system would need to be large to step down the high rpm to a very low rpm.

Good work. I now see that my dream of an economical way to shred all the plastic packaging I get is unrealistic. The horsepower required just to shred a plastic bottle is surprising. I looked at commercial shredders, and they are way out of my budget. After watching this, it's fairly clear why. I assume they use heat treated steel to allow the cutters to hold an edge. I got nervous watching you poking the beast with that chunk of wood. If the hopper had vertical sides (i.e. a rectangular tube, not a frustrum), you could use a slightly smaller rectangular piston to push the cartons down safely.

can i ask, if you were to change the material to wood or also from plastic, would it work? i am just curious

How can we make these teeth more readily than lasering steel? Can we use 4" carbide tooth sawblades? I might think about this.
@SciCynicalInventing
@SciCynicalInventing 5 ай бұрын
If the carbide teeth were to fragment it could damage the shredder. I would imagine saw blades might be harder to use because theyre more fragile, good for high RPM cutting but they dont have a lot of strength when you want to shred slow with a lot of torque. Although i could be wrong because if you had a good way of feeding the plastic so the saw blades nibble away and dont take large cuts it might be okay. if you had a small cnc mill you could cut out blades with an endmill or if you had access to a cnc plasma cutter that could also cut out new blades pretty easily

@@SciCynicalInventing great feedback. Thanks. That's an interesting consideration, the feed rate and it makes complete sense, what you say about the bite size. Alternately to using saw blades, what sort of cheap thick steel discs are out there I wonder.

@@altrombone1775 good idea. I'll have to see what I can get at the store. I'm still considering if small carbide tooth circular saws could work at low velocity on something like a PETE bottle neck/threads
@Castor586
@Castor586 2 ай бұрын
@@altrombone1775I'm not "unsold" on the idea of using washers, but what would your thoughts be for using 1084 knife blade stock instead? Cut them to a uniform size, grind the cutting teeth in, and then drill your preferred diameter for the rotating axle.

Was there a reason why you changed the design of the blades. The first design seemed to shred the plastic to a more smaller and thinner size.

I didn't change the blades, the blades were cut according to the earlier design, but yes, the updated design has better blades. I had the blades cut before the new design came out.

Have you ever considered preheating the plastic prior to trying to shred it ? Not melting temperature but a temperature that softened the plastic
@SciCynicalInventing
@SciCynicalInventing Күн бұрын
I have but I haven't tried it, I would imagine it's probably impractical to do. I would be worried about sodt plastic sticking and clumping together, which would wear down the shredder faster.

@@SciCynicalInventing I would try it ( I don't own a shredding machine to try it myself) . I would place 5-10 batches (say PLA) in an oven starting with the lowest temperature range (say 50C - 100C in 10degree increments) . Load all batches at 50C then pull one out and shred and observe ,then raise oven to 60C wit for x minutes for batches to come up to temperature then repeat. In the end you should have a rating of catching possibly an ideal temperature window for shredding . I am going to predict a slightly hotter batch is ideal ,as it cools down in shredder it finds the ideal shred point. Another idea is if the experiment shows any signs of success the question becomes finding a way to heat the plastic just before going into the shredder tray. Lastly with PLA I wonder if it being soaked first changes its ability to be shredded . In other words , is a dry PLA easier than a fully soaked PLA to shred? Thanks for your videos .

"I'm not a mechanical engineer" That's a good thing, because a mechanical engineer would have spent way too much time building something that is needlessly complicated and can't be easily repaired.
