Roses aren't the most common material for a bonsai; yet have always wanted to give one a shot. In this video I make a new Rose bonsai from nursery stock.

The roots looks healthy but they look so fragile. I am liking the stem though. Unique bonsai are always intriguing and challenging. Success on one is such an accomplishment imo. Cheers bro and best of luck!

They sure do look fragile! Am hoping this one survives the repot, but being the first Rose I have worked with it will be a bit of a test. Thanks :)

Great vid Euan. I'm about to receive some bare root roses for first potting. What soil mix did you use. I think you said lots of organic. Was it all organic, i.e., just potting mix? Because I'm not able to do selective hand watering (I travel a lot) I have an automated watering system and I generally use a very open, low organic mix to avoid drowning the trees. I'm thinking I might need more organics for roses?

Hey mate, yeah they like a lot of water and shouldn’t dry out completely so sometimes that holds a bit more water will help I think 😊 depends on your climate but all of mine are in mostly potting mix and just a bit of extra drainage aggregate. Hope they turn out well for you mate!

@@EuanEllery Thanks Euan. I'm down the road a bit from you in Bungendore (near Canberra). We are still having frosts, but it will soon get hot and dry, so I'll need to strike a balance. I'm thinking I'll try 50% organics and keep an eye on what happens.

Hi Brenda, not specifically sorry, I don't have one of those. What are you hoping to do with it? Does it need a repotting, or just a pruning?

No worries. It’s gone. 🙃😭 ☺️I usually have a green thumb but I’d never had a bonsai before.

I've been chopping off the main root off* of my tiny little bonsai trees! Then my mother came over and said yeah now they are gonna starve. Is this true? Also, I wash the old dirt off before repotting..Is this bad to do?
@EuanEllery
@EuanEllery 3 жыл бұрын
Hey - if they're super tiny you might want to keep the roots, but it generally depends on the species and health of the tree. If it's just the tap root though, they don't feed the tree at all so you'll be safe. It's just the small feeder roots you need to worry about. In terms of rinsing off the soil, I haven't on this because I wanted to avoid disturbing the roots as much as possible. It can be a little risky if the tree isn't too healthy, but I've generally not had too much of an issue with it :)
