Making a screw chuck for my wood lathe

I try making a screw chuck for my vintage wood lathe without getting screwed. This is going to be a bigger success than that faceplate failure of the previous video.

Here's a tip when tapping a blind hole I put candle wax in the hole. This does 2 things as the tap heats it melts the wax and lubricates the cut and the wax flows up through the flutes of the tap and carries away the chips so they can't fall into the bottom of the hole and jam the tap.

I'll try it out but it's pretty cold over here so the wax will solidify and I don't think the tapping friction will melt it again. But I guess even solid wax will push up the chips.

i bought an old lathe about half a year ago. the seller used to work with wood on the lathe. Despite dismantling and cleaning 3 times, I still find places with wood chips. I hate it and don't recommend turning wood on a lathe. the shit settles all over the lathe. I still like your video.so you will get a like of me.

Good looking project. The screw on my Craftsman screw center wasn't nearly that big and it held everything I turned with it. A couple more light taps with the hammer and the screw would have been fairly straight. Congrats on your project.

Thank you. I've since used it to turn down 4 or 5 oak bowl blanks and it survived without any problems. But I wouldn't use a screw chuck on those weak alder trees we got growing everywhere around here.

the commercial screws are really deep sharp thin threads and screw in easily. I have contemplated making one of these but I don't see any advantage of a screw over a faceplate. I can put 6 screws in and know it's not coming off. If the end is not flat, a screw is just as wobbly as a faceplate.

Well done. In the US that type of screw is called a lag bolt. I have broken my share of these. They normally shear at the transition from the lag thread to the unthreaded shaft. I have a screw centre for my OneWay Talon chuck. Also hardened steel. I normally only need this to go into the wood about 12mm. I would consider using a thicker lag and turning down the shaft to M8, or drilling and tapping for bigger diameter. As you observed, the bowl blank can get stuck on the screw. You do need some method to hold the spindle to get the bowl blank off.

ja goed gemaakt ik had er 2 gemaakt een jaar geleden ,ik wil iets zeggen die schroefje van de midden die verkopen ze al kant en klaar met zijn 8mm p1.25 en als ze uit de fabriek komen zijn ze beter als jij de schroefdraad maakt want hij is beter gecentreerdt ,ja ik heb 5 schroefjes in me la liggen en als hij breekt dan doe ik gewoon een nieuwe er in tot kijk voor een nieuwe video bye

NEVER use a SPINDLE ROUGHING GOUGE on an end grain project. It could hurt you badly. Other than that cringe, I enjoyed your process which looks much like mine.

After observing his often questionable workmanship, I mused to myself that he'll probably use a spindle roughing gouge to demonstrate it. And, by damn, he did! At any rate, we all had to start somewhere. I hope you have learned a lot in the several years since you did this video and have not suffered serious injury. Good luck!

@@Rolingmetal I think it has to do with the profile of the gouge can catch in end grain and whatever happens after that is not pretty....they are meant for spindle work where there is no end grain present.

@@Rolingmetal to be precise roughin spindle gouge, if yo use spindle gouge on bowl turning you have to grind it to irish grind,(eliminate high protruding edges of gouge), when using gouge like yours on bowl in the moment when the gouge axle is not vertical to the surface of bowl it will catch and the result is possible injury.
