Making a Small Drawknife without Forging or Heat Treating

A small drawknife is made from an old planer blade. The blade is high speed steel, and doesn't require heat treating to harden or temper it. The handle shanks are brazed or silver soldered onto the blade, so no forging is necessary.

Mike, That is a fantastic job simple and to the point and very well made. Taking one's time at a project shows the quality of work of the builder. Have a blessed day my friend.

I'm coming back in my next life as your apprentice. It's amazing to watch you work. Actually it's really relaxing -- it is clear in the video of the fine differing amounts of pressure you apply to the various pieces to get them to turn out as you want. Mad skillz, dude. I especially liked watching you create the handles, and watching the effects of the wire pressing against the turning handles, leaving the browned grip lines. Beautiful work.

Tip for using the grinder in passes like at the beginning of the video. Use strong telescoping magnet grabbers to guide the blade safely and smoothly through.

Mike - I love your videos. Very good quality and your voice is very relaxing. You should try and do some more videos for your fans! I just bought a Jacobs rubberflex chuck based on your video from 9 years ago!

When you said it was a plane blade could you please explain what kind of plane and if possible where could I order such blade .
@mikelevyonline
@mikelevyonline 2 жыл бұрын
It's not a blade from a handplane. It's a planer blade from a machine planer or jointer. You will have to search online for current availability.

You say the heat wont effect the hardness of the HSS but isnt HSS also quenched and tempered like any other steel and this would potentially temper it even more so it becomes softer?
@mikelevyonline
@mikelevyonline 2 жыл бұрын
No. High speed steel tolerates much higher temperatures than other common tool steels before losing hardness.
@WesB1972
@WesB1972 6 ай бұрын
High speed steel is generally quenched in air and is able to maintain hardness at red heat. Machine shop cutters are high speed steel.

At around 3 minutes on dude sounds like he might die if he doesn't ingest some sort of liquid.. My Mans was Parched... try hydrating before filming a video. Once I started hearing you swallow and wetting your mouth I couldn't quit hearing it, quite distracting.. just some constructive criticism, take it for what it's worth..
