I recreate the golden spike for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental rail road. I'm only about about 21 months late... the last couple of years have been hard on me ok.

It wouldn't have been at boiling point that quickly, but if you throw something of either extreme heat into cold or vise versa, it's gonna react and expel. It's like when you add frozen fries into the oil too fast. the cold water causes the hot oil to pop and expel

So to answer common questions that I'm getting: I went home and filmed getting the spike out then I showed how the spike fared. Once the weather cleared up I drove back out (to some random field in town not to promontory) and pounded it in. Then I chopped it out once again and filmed how the spike fared the second time. Apologies for making it unnecessarily confusing. The weight of the spike after driving twice was 588 grams. Given the uncertainty in the scale it could be and probably is much less than a gram. Also most of the loss was from the 2nd time in the random field so please dont go trying to pan out the dirt at promontory.

You could conceal it even better by lowering the purity to 14k or 10k, but you would need more spikes. You could also make an alloy with copper, giving it a rose color. I feel like the best way to conceal gold is to make wire with it. Not only will it be hidden, but it makes a great conductor, so you can use it around the house for things like you’re speakers.

@ericlester3056
@ericlester3056 3 жыл бұрын
Gold alloy not good for acoustics. That short stock of rail was what was ringing. Notice how the ringing got louder as the gold spike pinched it to the log. That's because the rail had suddenly better acoustic coupling with the log. The log acted as a resonator, the spike was like the bridge and the rail was like a string.
@Enakronizum
@Enakronizum 3 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't its increased mass/density offer different acoustics? I'm okay with being wrong, and maybe it's any number of variables (microphone, speaker, mentality). Maybe Cody can run an experiment testing the acoustical properties of different metals/alloys?
@ericlester3056
@ericlester3056 3 жыл бұрын
@@Enakronizum take lead for instance. It has high density less than gold but is ductile and absorbs sound energy. Conversely, aluminium can be very resonant material. I will tell you this: the density of a particular mass has less to do with it's ability to resonate than it's physical structure. Copper makes a horrible bell, but add a little tin or zinc and you get a harder material with good acoustic properties.
