Brilliant idea with the points! Browsing the internet, I found websites where the cable in tube was sold for railway modelling purposes, but found it too expensive. The cheap alternative that I found are bicycle brakes. A little stiff, but will still make corners and is easily cut to size;

I am just getting back into Model Railways and train sets after 20 years away and been researching for the past 5 months, I have bought a Smokey joe and I have the caledonian belle too, which I see on your layout, I love that very cheap and great runner of a loco and it looks great too. I use rechargeable battery power to power 009 T-Trak layouts. It gives our group the flexibility to set up anywhere we like. We recently did an exhibition on the platform of a preserved railway station with both trains and an above ground section of the subway system right next to us. The cutout brings the memory of a departed friend to mind. He loved adding things like that to his layout sections to make them easy to carry.

That’s a great way of doing the point control. I’ve used the same PTFE tube but with welding wire inside which means having to go fairly straight, and sort of picture hanging wire which is a little more flexible. Retaining it isn’t easy but a bit (ok a lot) of superglue and activator spray (that’s the important bit) gets it in the end. This layout reminds me of your awesome 18” one. Your brick wall behind the layout; awesome patina, great background for shots! Take care gents

Now that is how to maximise the absolute minimum! 😃 Reminds me of that experimental layout you did when you tested which locos could get round the minimal radius curves (still can’t believe that 9F did it!) 😊 Great to see a few of your 0-4-0s being given a chance to shine in their own right! For wire in tube control you can use push/pull Bowden cables from model aircraft. I have used these before. I even used them to extend a point motor as it would have been out of reach otherwise. Like the new layout.

Very interesting to see your new layout. On my last layout I did points control with heavy music wire inside brass tubing set into "ditches" cut into the fiberboard supporting the tracks and then covered up. I like your use of plastic as it is corrosion-free and naturally slippery. Also, congrats on using transition curves. My first layout was for trams and so had sharp 10 inch radius curves, but the use of transition sections really helped avoid derailments. I look forward to seeing you further develop this latest layout. Cheers from Wisconsin!

I'm working on a design for a compact loop with a shunting layout in the middle - as my son would like to run his Flying Scotsman around the loop and enjoy shunting operations as well. I came across transition curves on a US channel and was thinking they might make the operation of larger tender engines around the loop more successful. I'll watch this with interest.

Fantastic. I live in a small flat so most of my OO stuff is in storage, been getting into Z scale but it's quite expensive and a bit of a novelty. Hoping to make something similar to this with curves that a terrier and maybe a 14xx will be able to handle. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. My interest in making something work for me in OO is inspired by your previous micro layouts!

The Terrier will just about go round this but occasionally de-rails. I think a smoother curve (mine is a bit erratic) of about 22in dia might be alright. For some reason my Airfix 14xx wanted nothing to do with micro ovals.

@@BudgetModelRailways You may well find that the Hornby J94 0-6-0 will cope with these curves, but needs the older wider couplings attached. Also possibly the Bachmann class 08 diesel. And in the past you built a railcar powered by a Lima HO class 33, I believe? That will cope with curves like these. My Lima class 33 is fine on my microlayout, as is the old LIma 4F (also HO scale). Super layout. Minor suggestions for more play value. Turn front siding into a passing siding with a house track, put two sidings on each of the interior siding tracks, and consider adding an additional track switch to the main loop, which can be a siding now, or an extension to a future layout addition later. Enjoy. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

@@tracynation2820 sorry, but what's a house track?
@tracynation2820
@tracynation2820 Жыл бұрын
Super. A house track is a siding off either end of the passing siding, usually terminated as close to the end of the table, or slightly beyond, as possible, and disguised with a locomotive shed or car shop sticking half way out beyond the edge of the table supporting the track and warning the pedestrians. If you have access to a curved switch, you could connect the main to the front siding, creating a passing siding, then put a siding right to your side of the table edge, or beyond, (one more locomotive.) so that you can access the track while you are sitting. This track change allows more equipment on the rails, allows for more fun and involvement in the railroad, gives you a place to try out your new locomotive while the passenger express blasts by on the main, helps prevent boredom, and gives you a way to run your train "hands free," which is just being able to run around your own train without a giant 0-5-0 hand switcher having to move the train around every time. Good luck, I love these kinds of layouts. 💙 T.E.N.

Hi Mike. A very interesting layout for exhibition display. I congratulate you on some original thinking regarding points control. Just one question Mike: Is the Cyril Freezer track plan sheet available as displayed on here, or have you enlarged a photo-copy from one of his books? I have a C F book of my own but, as time passes, the hobby's advancing technology seems to make some of his suggestions unfeasible. Some adaptions are possible but not in all cases. Shame, as I do rate him highly as both an enthusiast and an author. Incidentally, I voted on the Hornby website and the vote for my favourite channel went to yours truly. Keep up the good work with your prudent advice for us pensioners and those not so well off. 👍 Paul.

Hi Paul. I used it from the original very old book, I could probably photo it and let you have it. You seem to have built more layouts than most people have had hot dinners. I know your videos have started lots of people building layouts including myself (after 70+ years) - three layouts and counting. I'm afraid I am becoming a llittle bit cynical over the wealth of layouts which consist of an oval with points. In my mind, this is hardly realistic. Real railways have an up and a down line. So, I tried a double oval. Have you tried wiring a double oval? You either have to have two completely separate layouts or go to DCC (perish the thought). Maybe my cynicism is misplaced. Keep up the good work.
