We are starting the new Live video series. this time we are making a Turning saw each step will be live so you can see all the problems that come up and how they are solved. This week we will be roughing out the arms and getting them ready for joinery.
we will be making a turning saw with the kit from Tools For Working Wood.
www.toolsforworkingwood.com/s...
00:00:00 James Wright: What are we going to do today?
12:00 AubreykunI missed the start, what is he going to use for the blade?
16:00 rouxbeau: Why use the back vise like 96% of the time instead of the front ones?
18:00 Kim Allen: Where is the kit from again?
26:00 Aubreykun: Did you have a particular project in mind to use the saw on when you're done with it?
37:00 Tim Cheatwood: Question: I missed it, did you do a stop cut just before that end piece before counseling toward it?
40:00 theduck: Did James tell us the difference between a coping saw and a turning saw?
43:00 Jonathan Boatman: I've heard Paul sellers talk about going with the grain and all that but he says you can feel the direction better than seeing. watching you chisel made me think about that and could you elaborate?
46:00 Kim Allen: Do all coping saws have pins and fret saws no pins?
50:00 Wayne Dixon: Do you use the bow saw on the push stroke or pull stroke... or does it depend?
51:00 Joe R: Do you ever miss using power tools?
53:00 Tim Cheatwood: How thin is "too thin" for the stock for this saw?
55:00 Greg Dent: Heaven forbid but if you ever had to put a value on all your hand tools for insurance purposes what do you think the tools would be worth to purchase in the condition they are now?
56:00 Greg Cheng: Any books that focus on woodworking skill and projects you would recommend?

Hey, First off, I want to apologize for being MIA for the last couple of months. We had several funerals with friends and family/extended family. Then the fall semester started up and I fell even further behind in supporting my favorite channels via viewership. I'm not big on reading myself and prefer the visual and hands-on approach to learning. I am packed this semester on reading and course work, but will do my best to catch up soon. This looks like it's going to be a fine saw indeed.

I LOVE walnut. It is soooo well behaved compared to hardwoods like oak. A turning saw is on my increasingly long list of things I want to make. I think the thing I really need to make more of is time ;)

When you were talking about the wood you were choosing I was going to make the White Oak joke, but your wife beat me to it.

Dear James, watching you painfully shaping the wood of your handle, why not use a turning saw or even a coping saw? Oh no, you are still making one!

Books are a wonderful source of information. BUT!!! Books can’t begin to describe the authentic feel of a plane sliding through the grain, or the crisp tap of a mallet and chisel, the 5 senses kick in and teach you technique, books teach structure, mechanics, and joinery. At least that’s my opinion. Feel the wood, work the wood, smell the wood, taste the wood... if you’re making popsicle sticks!!!!

I much prefer experementing and enjoying personally

yeah... was just agreeing with you James. Experimenting is awesome when you’re working on your own project. My problem is that customers always want expensive wood. So I don’t get to experience that bliss of “ooooo let’s do this” you lucky son of a plane pusher!!!

There is a large european style turninng framesaw hanging in front of your roubo saw. I know that these saws can be used for ripping and crosscuts. Could you show us the proper usage of those saws? I have a hard time figuring out how to ripcut a board with such a saw. The slat in the middle of the saw kinda prevent me from getting too deep into the wood. Also, do you use the sawblade so that it cuts on the push or pull stroke? I would be really gratefull for some pointers.

I want to do that video soon. But I have a few other things I have to do with it first. If you want to rip with a bow saw you have to turn the blade 90° to the frame that way you can rip all the way down a board. Push or pull depends on what you like. Most of the time I'm going to use it on the push stroke as I'll be using it either at the saw bench or held vertically in a bench vise.

Thank you very much for the reply. I imagine that it would be tricky to hold the saw stable and do a straight cut, when the blade/ frame is turned 90 degrees. I am really looking forward to that video, allthough I enjoy all the videos you do :)
