Great stuff. I've tried multiple native fish sp. over the years but have come to really appreciate the golden rudd: active all year, feeds at all levels, shoal together nicely and attractive to watch.

I've got a small 2000 litre pond. It has one pump flowing into an old kockney koi filter. Filter is for a 30,000 litre pond. In there I have about 10 koi carp, about 5 english carps some with scale some just leathers. About 20 goldfish, about 10 small local pond fish. Thunk there small chubs and one green tench. Pond is small and so are the fish but healthy as can be with a massive filter on it. Plants and even the odd visiting frog and hundreds of dragon flys. I love the nature it brings to my small corner of the garden in Kent

There are lots of pond plants that are very happy to grow in gravel in the pond - they rake the nutrients from the pond water (which is a good thing as your fish will be producing nutrients non stop!). Floating plants are good too to take out excess nutrients from the water and help keep water more clear ish.

Thanks for the video. Also for saving me some unexpected scuba diving to plant my thankfully, partially filled pond. Also will be stocking native species.

When digging out soil, put it str8 into rubble sacks approx 30p each. It's much easier move around than a conical pile next to the hole that will only need to be shifted again. Then advertise "top soil, free to collect" and it'll be gone on a flash. Or save it for future projects such as raised flower beds.

Great advice 👍🏻 And at the very least, if it’s full of stones and not wanted it’s easy to put in the normal general waste bin over the course of a few months.

have had two perch in my pond for couple of years.they started out approx 3 inches and now look around 6/7.. when I come to pond now they will sit just under the surface ,at an angle,and wait for me to offer them a worm by hand.. soon as I dangle a worm in the water one of them usually mullers it in seconds..i had a mate doing it and one of them hit his fingers as it struck,scared the crap outta him soft bleeder.. :-) will be returning them to the canal next year I think but in the meantime they have reduced 1000s of tadpoles and small frogs to a small and very cautious amount of survivor's..

That's a great pond! and like you said, It's a shame you have to add the repelling cat feature as it does spoil the look but I hope it works! You should add a few Sticklebacks as well! ☺

Hi Jack...with out the pun! I have also made a pond during the lockdown, and it is also raised from the ground, i have a couple of baby mirror carp and a couple of goldies, which i purchased from Bardills garden centre, i have also added a couple of stone loach which i caught one night in my net on the river trent, i have put in some oxygen weed and i have also had to add a 3 in one pump, filter, and UV light system due to having pea soup type looking water, that was caused due to algae bloom, and visibility was terrible, but now since adding the 3 in one pump system the water is now once again gin clear! i really enjoy watching your vids and aso look out for any tips, much appreciated, please keep up the good work!! ✊🏻

Rainwater only ponds might not be the best for fish. They get some of the calcium they need directly from the water column. Also carbonates in tap water help stabilize water chemistry and stop it fluctuating too much. A filter wont take out nitrates. Plants will however these will be re released into the water when they break down in the autumn so would need to be removed once in a while.

You might be able to help:) I have a native British snail tank. I've noticed when at the river near me some tiny fish. They don't appear to have grown since I first saw them several months ago. About 0.5 - 3.4 of an inch. They appear to be in the top two inches of water only. In fast and slow flowing water. I'd love to find out what they are and perhaps keep some in my snail tank. Thank you:)

I'm looking at doing something really stupid, and building a shallow river in my garden, with a semi-detached bog garden but I'm thinking about tiny fish, really tiny like stickleback sized - just so that there's something in there. Toddler paddling friendly in areas occasionally, about 7m long and say 1m wide... any advice? Depth, flowrate, feed etc? A friend of mine said it will need 24/7 filtration, and I'm not so sure it will depending how deep the deep bits are and suchlike... any input greatly appreciated. (p.s. Leicestershire this is, so not hugely different climate wise).

Try building a negative edge stream pond and waterfalls. Pump size is critical. Not sure sticklebacks are right though.

Nice idea. Is the water staying clear with so many fish in it? Also, why only 1 or 2 individuals per species? Common minnows, for example, occur in large shoals in the wild (and are more at home in flowing water, such as rivers, streams and lakes). I imagine it must be feeling quite stressed being the only one of its kind. Personally, I would reduce the number of species and increase the population of the few species you choose to keep (the majority of those mentioned in the video are shoaling species). Regarding your single stone loach, it's probably been eaten by an eel by now. I'm not necessarily against a set up containing both predator and prey species, but it only works long term if the prey species have a large enough breeding population.
@JackPWMedia
@JackPWMedia 2 жыл бұрын
So far its not bad at all, i expect it will clear up more in the winter. they all mix together happily as a mixed shoal as they often do in the wild. the eel is smaller then the stone loach so no worries there at present.

Never add soil to a pond. Lily tubers can be weighted to the gravel. The fish will feed the plants. You need a bog filter in a barrel.

I keep native 🇬🇧 fish in a large aquarium in my house. The price of tropical fish has gone up so much now. The cheapest fish is still £2 each... A larger aquarium might need a 100 or more to populate it... so £200. Something a bit more exotic, like Coral Red Pencilfish are 15 pounds each! That's £1500 for the same sized shoal!!! Insane, or what? £2 for a pot of maggots, and I can fill the tank. And when I fancy a change, I can net them all out and release the back into the same river (in far better condition than when they were taken out) and just catch something different...
