Since you have several sets of stays/corsets now, I would love a review of how comfortable each one is for all-day wear. Your videos are always so lovely and high quality, you are doing a great job!!

I completely understand the anxiety about feeling stagnant. I know I have put things off (especially when it comes to school) when I find myself feeling like I’m doing the same thing over and over, and not getting better/improving. I want you to know that you are seen and supported. I love seeing what you have done, and am looking forward to what the future brings for you.

Whatever you do, I’m gonna be here to watch 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve never commented before, but I’ve watched dang near everything you’ve made, because I love learning new sewing techniques and your personality is great. Perfect cozy watching for when I’m doing embroidery or studying, and I hope you find something that excites you soon! ETA: If you need to step away from youtube for awhile to figure things out, I know I’ll still be here when you get back, and I’m sure many others will be as well.

I think you should do a project that is a break from sewing. That way you can try to recharge your sewing battery. I would love to see journaling videos even if it's you planning out a project. Edit: You could even revist some past projects before youtube and explain where you were in your path and if you would make any changes.

thank you! I think eventually I would like to but probably not for a while, at least on a more commercial scale, just bc finding someone to grade them is going to be expensive 😅 I really like making the cinematic style reveal videos and I've always wanted to do more travel videos, but uhh that kind of became not an option the past two years lol. I do also want to stick with sewing and costuming because I really love it so much! but maybe incorporating more purchased items into fantasy outfits? idk haha whenever i think about it it becomes a big vortex of 'what do i do?'

I love your videos, it was interesting to see how the stays needed altering. Please don't be too hard on yourself, plenty of us love what you do. 😍 If you are feeling burn out, which is common for youtubers, maybe focus on smaller sewing projects, crafts or even a few unfinished project videos (if you have UFOs) Having a formula that works isn't necessarily a bad thing, take The Closet Historian, for example. She films her sewing stuff in a specific clear way that is very informative and also allows her personality to come through as she is narrating. I'll never tire of her sewing & tying darts! 😂 She'll then break videos up with closet tours, thrifting finds & vlogs. Your loyal viewers are here to see you and what you love doing. x

If you're looking for more patterns to try, give Truly Victorian. Pretty cheap, and they include all the sizes. They have a few corsets from across the Victorian Era. Thanks for these videos, BTW. I've been finding them very helpful. Sadly, I think you've directed me off redthreaded because even though I'm small chested, I'd rather not serge in a corset, and I'd rather have a variety of sizes to work with. So you just saved me a lot of money. Lol.

my first corset pattern i ever bought was truly victorian! it's from... 2010 i think haha so i should definitely revisit it! they're pretty decent patterns if you don't need or want instructions but yeah they are very expensive for just a pattern and need so much work to fit anyone outside the standard sizing it's probably not worth it if you have other sources you like.

I watch your channels while I do other creative things like knitting and crochet. Maybe this is not relevant to you channel, but what about exploring other historical textile and fiber skills, occasionally. Like, weaving, spinning, and things like that. You are an amazing story taler. Maybe those activities could be turned into a theatrical bit, like your wonderful reveals. It doesn't always have to be a tutorial style, but more of diving into a learning and research side. When I feel stuck, leaning into another craft and lighting that fire of something fresh and new, helps respark the passion for the craft I was feeling blahhh about. And maybe you don't even need to put it on your channel but just try something in in you personal life. But I'd love to see it.

I hope you find a good groove that makes you enthusiastic to film! One of the things that helps me when I feel like I'm stagnating is to pick up something completely different for a bit--like during your Alice videos, every single one was a totally different kind of task. I know you said that the project took so long you burnt out on it, but there might be a happy medium in complex cosplay that you can find. Something not as intense as Alice every time, but still with enough varietal components--like your spooky witch, or fairy costume!--that it keeps you engaged. Testing out patterns is a really awesome series to have, and something perhaps to fall back on when you don't have inspiration or need a break. Info/reviews are searched for and could really help with your channel being found. So they are still good! But very understandable that they feel formulaic. I made a pair of stays for chest support after watching the first couple of these videos, and your Tudor petticoat, and seeing just how quickly they could be done! Corsetry has always intimidated me, because I would look at Victorian stuff and all the pieces and mockups that one seemed to need to do to get them right, but stays are so simple and got me just where I wanted. So I really appreciate those videos from you.
@moth.faerie

Thank you for the thoughtful comment! I think more short term projects like the witch and fairy are more in line with what I want to continue doing 😊 the pattern testing will definitely continue! I’m hoping I can figure out a good way to make them not feel so repetitive bc I find them super useful for myself too and have fun making the actual garments. Im so glad I could help make it less intimidating!!🥰

Hi, hope you can take some time off without worrying about content and the like. You posted a lot of wonderful videos and taking a break to recharge your emotional battery is totally OK. The important thing is that you feel yourself (don't know how to put it as english is not my first language) On another note, those stays look really nice, but I can see how the bust area seems to needs a little more space. Personally I now choose either stays with both front and back lacing or modify them with a front seem, to be able to add a little slit with tiny eyelet and lacing to the top 6 inches of the stays, thus creating additional room for the twins to grow... Not always accurate but comfort come first sometime, and the shape does not change with the dress on top. As always, congratulations to completing this project!

I totally understand feeling frustrated by stagnation. Most recently, to help me get out of that, I bought a bag of masarepa and borrowed a book on Latin American cooking from the library and made all the recipes in it that called for masarepa. Totally outside my comfort zone and there were quite a few flops, but I learned a lot and now I feel ready to tackle some of the projects that didn't excite me before. (And not eat masarepa items for a while 😆) While you might feel low energy in your videos, I really appreciate that it doesn't feel like you're jumping out of my screen. Those kinds of videos bother me. I like being able to watch and learn how someone else works without worrying if they're going to get in my face. Hopefully that makes sense. Thank you for your honesty and being real. I learn something new from each of your videos.

Sorry you've been feeling a little down about this channel! I'm just catching up on the past few videos and even before you asked for feedback was about to comment saying I LOVE all your really honest reviews about patterns. I find they can be really hard to find in more niche or indie spaces. Your channel is literally my favourite sewing channel, by a long shot. I love the amount of detail you go into and your explanations of couture techniques. I guess maybe 'easier' videos to make (and search for) could be stuff like that, like as it is now there's an Alice cosplay video (with secret roll-pinning tutorial), when those mini-tutorials are so good they could hold up as standalones. I also wouldn't mind voiceovers in the montages because I like to watch your channel while I'm sewing myself. I think you mentioned in the previous video that you weren't sure about mock-up videos and how to make them better; maybe leaning more into the pattern review side of the video could work for that? Also your designer analyses are absolutely stellar, but obviously very expensive to produce. I know occasionwear renting is on the rise, I wonder if that would be an option for producing more of those without shelling out for so many designer gowns. Anyways I really hope you keep up the great work, but at a pace which works for you!

1. It's been really satisfying because I still get to learn about historical fashion/sewing and make adorable things but I get to skip the rage of trying on a bodice for the nth time and it still being wrong. I got the idea from sewstine who made a tiny doll corset awhile back.

The stays came out lovely. Well done. My only advice for what's next for the channel is - follow your nose. Don't feel constrained by what you perceive as this communities expectations. If you're not feeling it for a costume video then maybe try another medium? Or make some how-to's? Or just follow what your finding interesting and take us down the rabbit hole with you? And yes, low energy seems to be the rule right now. Culturally we have 5 alarm fires constantly breaking out - overwhelming is an understatement. Deep breath and pace yourself - we're entering a marathon for activism and engagement. As for life on this corner of the continent - blessedly quiet. There were a large group of (fully patched) bikers that tried to recreate the truckers occupation of February. Thankfully, the police did their job this time and the bikers left when they said they would. But they'll probably be back multiple times over the summer and fall. Things are progressing with the leatherwork. Belts are a useful thing to practice on. With the bonus of coming out of the exercise with a belt that actually fits me. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I'm so glad you're doing better! it's nice when police do the job they're actually supposed to do instead of going rogue like it seems is more and more common these days. leatherwork sounds exciting, maybe i'll finally get back to that in the next month or so! i think styling videos would be a nice break and maybe going back to leatherworking or trying chainmail. thank you for the suggestions and for always being here!

I have been watching all of your videos and you inspired me to start sewing again, actual clothes but also history-bound and historical ones. I love the mix of your content, I feel with you when you struggle and it is SO GOOD to see how other creative people make mistakes and learn from them, they wing it, they find a way. My perfectionism has improved a lot since I started watching your content just because you teach and preach and it is just you, your nature. Please dont give up but please take care of yourself. take a break, reform, regroup, find that happiness in creating again, and then come back and tell us about it. many creatives struggle with being in a rut - maybe read The Artists Way by Julia Cameron, if you are into things like that - and a lot of us would love to hear your unique approach to getting out of it. For me it involved therapy to be honest - but thats not everyones cup of tea. I also always recommend channels like malama life (you could do smth like that too). I believe in you and you can too ! (and on account of everything being hard: yes, yes and yes - BUT your videos always make it better for me. I have like 4 or 5 people whose new content I watch as soon as it is out. and you are one of them. because you inspire!)

I like your videos, and hadn’t noticed a drop in enthusiasm. I think everyone goes through ups and downs. If you’re looking for other video ideas, to kind of intersperse between your big sewing videos, I’d love it if you could do some more fashion history/ explanation/ chatty videos, explaining different fashion eras, more about yourself and what studies you’ve done, bullet journaling, things like that. As long as you do something that you are actually really excited about for yourself, it will make for a good video. Most of my favourite channels post less-often, so I’d be happy to wait for a video that you’re more happy with (if you’re feeling constrained by time). No matter what you choose, don’t apologise for doing what’s right for you 💕

That plus I'd love to keep learning about filming and editing and I feel like I've really stalled in that because I am trying so hard to keep to a schedule. I'm currently hiding from my own stays project because it scares me 😅 so watching yours is comforting lol You could always mix it up with some fun, easier videos though. GIrl! Wow, all of you say the same thing about anxiety. We watch you because you're drop dead gorgeous and we love just watching you create. If you sat there and played with your cat it would still be lovely. We're comparing you to all the crap videos out there, not to your other videos. But yes, it's easy to get kind of stuck. Do some reviews. Tell us about your favorite costumes and characters and why they appeal to you. Do a spring closet viewing. Do some montage work about your own costuming journey. But try to relax, you're just lovely and the work is amazing. Deep breath!

I second what everyone who has already commented: I love your videos, and I hope you can find a way to feel more excited about them yourself! That linen stretches was something I didnt really know until I made a linen pair of pants that Im now having to take in for the second time because theyve... grown... :p Ive only made one stays pattern, the simplicity front lacing ones that are everywhere on youtube, and I dont find them comfortable. I have no comparison material so I dont know if its the tightness or this specific pattern or stays in general.. but I was definately a bit disappointed by that.

It's so great to see the alterations you made! I'm finding myself constantly having the issue of "I bought this really cool pattern but it doesn't exactly fit me..." so I'm very slowly learning how to alter patterns to fit me (haven't yet succeeded so there's a long way to go). I'm working on these stays right now actually so this was perfect! I realized that I don't have a sturdy white top thread so I've been painstakingly handsewing my "mockup" (at this point, it's a wearable mockup at minimum) for what feels like eternity. Should I have just bought some white silk top thread? Probably. Instead, here I am waxing my lightweight linen thread and bemoaning that I chose muslin for the mockup fabric. (My reasoning at the time was that I just needed to see if the size was correct). Ah well, good practice for the "real thing" if I ever get around to it right?

Bodies get pretty incomprehensible the bigger things go. //dead Another thing you might try for more "relaxing" content is like that one video from Bernadette Banner that was finishing little projects that piled up. It was mostly ASMR-type content, was casual, and accomplished a bunch of small things instead of putting on the pressure to finish a large thing. I like to go back and watch that one for motivation when I'm stressed. Would the smaller goals be more relaxing do you think? (I'm just spitballing here. Is that the Old Red Mill Restaurant and Tavern in the background, or whatever it's called? I only ask because I think I saw it on an episode of Restaurant Impossible. That's quite the idyllic location for the reveal. I don't know if I could be pried out of that spot if I got in there lol my relatives might find me there about fives years later, covered in moss and leaves resembling a rock or a mushroom lol As for the stays, I'd say add 1/8" to the sides of the front pieces at the top, and grade it in so that it fits normally at the waist. I shall check them out, since my wife's starting to consider wearing a corset or stays over a conventional bra.

I can see you don't want to say it bluntly so I will. I'm experienced in digital and manual grading. It's simply unacceptable to not quality check a pattern before releasing it for purchase. The vast majority of any digital pattern making software has a function for walking seams and checking flowthrough. The only explanation I can think of for missing this is if her patterns are being made in a non fashion specific CAD software, like adobe illustrator, or they're being graded manually and digitized without actually validating the digitized pieces. If that's the case, that still has the function to measure a line and quality check. The grading process isn't finished if it hasn't been quality checked. Redthreaded is selling substandard patterns and the cheek of charging per size is particularly egregious when the pattern is not even complete.
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that they are unfinished patterns! Grading and quality check are a big reason I don't sell my own patterns - I know it is more than I can afford right now to hire a grader and make sure everything is perfect before it is sold, and it's definitely not a job I trust myself to get 100% correct

I think what you might need is a break. Your schedule doesn't give you too much breathing space. And maybe you could use a break from the things you do often, like sewing or corset making and distract yourself with headwear or flower crowns or jewelry or, if you feel daring, lingerie. And you do have an option of non-sewing videos, like your bujo and washi tape collection or a breakdown of your previous costumes, or even about KZfaq and what you learned from your time here. It's just ideas, brains are different, so think what's works for you and makes you happy and inspired. Putting more pressure on yourself isn't it.

Could the feeling of stagnation be caused by a lack of focus on an overarching thesis for your work? Is it entertainment, educational, show and tell, a vlog of your sewing progress...? What is the purpose of the clothing you make? Is it an expression of the urge to hand make something, because you want pretty clothes or pictures, because you want to try a new technique or pattern, or learn about or recreate a new decade or character? What are you getting out of the projects and what are we as your audience supposed to be getting from the videos? I think your work is beautiful but I'm often wondering if I'm supposed to be actively learning something or passively appreciating the process and the beauty of the final product.

i think coming from cosplay i'm very geared towards making costumes for events but that's a bi part of what's stressing me out 😅 so generally i guess i'd like to be making things to expand my costume/fantasy wardrobe! and because i love sewing 😊 for the purpose of my videos, i've always been personally drawn to more cinematic travel videos so that's the style of videography i like to emulate, but i also want people to get some educational content out of it bc its kept so secret unless you go to school for it
