Well basically we can do some maths to get the perfect size but i have found that technique to be not that efficient. Instead I just keep the shank part long enough and then i cut it to size and solder. You can also cut the size a bit shorter than your actual size. Then you can gently beat the ring to your required size. Hopefully that answered your question :)

What about the size of the top part? Like if you wanted to make it smaller or bigger how would you adjust it?

Basically, you calculate the sides by using the measurements of the top part. So when we make the ring, we start with the top part then we do the rest of the calculations
