The Collection is now available for sale on the Website Shop: www.iostopan.com/shop
Since mid-June I have been busy with the difficult task of sewing, binding and decorating a total of 15 journals that will be part of the new collection. The "Whispers Collection" will be available for sale in the beginning of October on my website at: www.iostopan.com
The size of all the notebooks is A6, 14 of them have a volume of 350 pages and the last one is massive one with a volume of 700 pages.
I wanted to try the same techniques, but in different conditions and that is why in this collection there is a slight game with contrast. Mostly because the notebooks are going to be bundled in pairs. All of them are bound in a nice, soft-to-touch, veg tanned goat skin, but half of them are lacquered to darken the the leather and allow it to be gilded as well.
The 15th notebook, however, is more interesting in every respect, it unifies the qualities of the others and surpasses them in many ways. Unlike the other journals, it is bound in vegetable tanned kangaroo leather, woven Gothic endbands from leathers strips and reinforced at the outer corners with massive silver corners.
The kangaroo skin is very special not only for its characteristic odor or beige-pink color, but also for its very smooth surface, very similar to calf skin. It was beautiful to work with at all stages from thinning, to dyeing and binding. The leather strips with which the enbands are woven are also of this skin but undyed.
Silver corners are something that I haven’t done with my journals, but the plan is for them to become a regular presence as my bindery was joined by my father’s newly created silversmith workshop. We both are tremendously excited by the future possibilities.
I’ll leave the big journal for a while to get back to the rest. I feel like I’m becoming quite attached to the blue sprinkled pages on the journals. I’ve managed to find the perfect compound for the job - methylene blue. I’ve done my previous attempts with ink, but I found it unstable to work with. Methylene blue will not stain when wet, in contrast to the ink instantly, which would have poured even further into the pages.
I hope you enjoy this short showcase of my work.

Freaking love watching these videos. A mixture of this wonderful craftsmanship and a presentation that gives a nice ASMR feeling. Ever wondered to tag your videos for ASMR or maybe people have already told you that? XD "It's pretty much a nerve reaction that releases stress and makes your head feel good"

I literally jumped out of my feet when I got notified that you uploaded a new video! I binged watch all your videos before and I thought you are not active on KZfaq anymore. I really wish you'd upload more especially the last one with the silver corners! But then again I know making these journal requires strenuous efforts so I understand why it took you a while to upload again. Congratulations to your father for the new silversmith workshop! I believe your next videos will become a lot more interesting with your fathers help! More power to you Stopan! Greetings from 🇵🇭!

Wow, it's odd to hear such a thing. I've been doing it since 2013 but I became engaged in it full time about 2 years ago. I'm comfortable like this with some techniques but alas there are a lot more in which I'm quite inexperienced.
@nigelwylie01
@nigelwylie01 5 жыл бұрын
Stopan, 5 years? You are a quick learner. And a natural. And bookbinding is such a complex craft that there will probably always be something to feel inexperienced about! But this video showcases some of your areas of strength very attractively. Great video skills. I love the way you use candle soot to coat the tools when designing the pattern before transferring it to the leather. I’ve never seen that before. So simple and obvious once you’ve seen it.

Hi, Thanks for the gilding part. In before videos comments I read that you varnishing by shellac before laying leafs and for removing just rubbed with a little turpentine. But how you do it with the silver? do you varnishing all book cover or just a silver part with small brush? Or you used palladium? Thank you for answers. You are awesome. I am happy that there are still such a great craftsman as you are.
@Stopan
@Stopan 4 жыл бұрын
Hello and yes, the varnishing is done on the whole cover which makes it proper for the gold as well as the silver. It's not that good to use however. I made this collection and a few others with silver leaf but it just doesn't stick properly, or at least I can't do it properly. Gold is much easier to handle.
@elli8001
@elli8001 4 жыл бұрын
@@Stopan Thank you for answer. I thinking about it how fragile shellac is. Did you try oil gilding glue like mixtion? Cause i saw you riddle journals and it looks like mixtion but really fast dry. I am gilder so everything what i gilded is not flexible so i am worry about the lether. Plus in the school profesor told me, that she know only the hot gilding and just with gold. So sorry if i have a lot questions 😊 but you are the first one who i find gilding books with silver. Thank you if you will have mood and time for answering me again.
