Millinery is an underrated art form and let’s normalise having hat boxes, hat pins and emoting through fabulous millinery. Idk it just adds something especially in Edwardian Period Dramas.

If you have very thin fabric use a small paint roller (microtec not foam) to adhere the fabric to mulberry or rice paper. Also known as Japanese/Chinese calligraphy paper. Roll a thin layer of glue on the paper and then lay the fabric on it. Roll it flat with a braver or cold iron. When it’s dry you can then glue to the card and not have to worry about glue coming through and damaging the fabric. Also, if you don’t have a non slip ruler you can do a couple of lines of bees wax on the back of your ruler to help it grip. ❤ from a traditional book binder. Lyns hats boxes and hats are gorgeous!

I filled a beautiful hatbox with soft scarves, soft beanies, and a soft shawl and sen it to my sister-in-law when she was going through chemo. She used the items all during that time and then passed the box with new items to a friend who was beginning her chemo. These boxes are such a lovely way to show those you love that you are with them throughout this difficult journey.

Love the customized boxes, the fan one was genius! I love stacking my boxes just to look at, I keep a lot in them except my hats, lol they are also on display so I can see them but having them inside the boxes when you travel keeps them safe. I have several top hats that none of my boxes fit, might try this & make my own for them.

This was awesome to watch! I am currently trying to redo an old wooden art box into a traveling sewing box, i.e. a Sew Tidy. I saw one on a deep dive into Pinterest. I thought hey! I can make that! And here I am, trying to fit fabric on the INSIDE of a box, with pockets, and anything else I can think of to make the job more difficult 😊. I've seen some with pegs for thread spools, and jars of buttons. I'm looking for a vintage style fabric, with a sewing motif. Sigh, I don't even need one of these, I just thought it looked cool. 😮 shiny!

The tightening carrying string blew my mind. I never cared for hat boxes but, now I might just make one. I’m in a bad pain flare at the moment and to try and distract from it I’ve been working on my black snail patterns shirt mock-up again and rewatching Futurama. Also was reading Inkheart and InkSpell in early July but, also kinda took a break from audiobooks too. I also started the process to get a Morning coat made for a wedding next month(not advanced enough to make it myself and I’m attempting to make the rest of it in time)

Wow that turned out lovely. Never really thought about making hat boxes but now I want some! It's got my brain whirling! Must remember to write it all down! Really too many things to learn and not enough time!! Not up to too much. I've picked up most of the back to school stuff for the grandson. Oh I also found someone to teach him and his friend sewing. They are making bags and thinking about Halloween. I think they are hooked! Other than that I finished the Nalini Singh book and now am sulking cause I don't want to wait til next year for the next one! Sometimes I really hate being caught up on a series!!

Way too many years ago when I first started looking for costumey people on the interwebs, Lynn McMasters' was some of the first really remarkable work I found. So every time you talk about her & do stuff with her I get a small vicarious fangirl thrill! Just finished my most recent project - a quilted/beaded christmas stocking. Very cute, I'm kind of stupidly excited about it!. Not sure which of the half-done projects I'm going to try to finish up next...

Thank you so much for this video! Before joining the Alice in Wonderland cast at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair, I worked in the Haberdashery for many years, acquiring A LOT of hats. I still purchase a hat from them every year when I visit. I've done my best to find hat boxes the right size to protect them, but most end up being just enough off in dimensions, that I risk damaging brims, etc.. This has inspired me to replace the ugly cardboard shipping boxes I've had to use with custom ones. Please thank Lynn McMasters for me for sharing her expertise!

Now I want hats so I can make hatboxes! I need to start and finish a summer dress from my last piece of indian fabric - hopefully before summer ends. Yesterday I met up with strangers and went fabric shopping here in NYC. Did I need fabric? no. Did i buy fabric? Heck yes! Super glad I got over social anxieties.... they were all very nice and I found some stores that carry a nice selection of the things I look for at reasonable prices (including a linen shop!!) Fabric went immediately into the laundry hamper so it will be ready to go! (Though i probably should zigzag the edges first now that i think about itl

Great instructional video. I've been in the process of making my own hat boxes for my vintage fedoras. I have more vintage fedoras then I have vintage hat boxes ( they are actually harder to find than the actual hats themselves), so until now, I had to improvise the storage boxes. Men's fedoras are generally oval in shape and I have made octagon, oval and round boxes, using a variety of materials (mostly cardboard and poster board). Your boxes are very pretty, unlike mine which are more utilitarian, designed to make it easier to tell what hat is in what box without having to open 50 boxes. I print out the logo of the hat manufacturer and a picture of the hat and attach it to the top and sides of the box. No more guessing what hat is in what box, that is as soon as I make enough of them for all my fedoras. Thank you for all you tips and tricks, I will definitely incorporate them into my next set of hat box designs.

If you don't want to use a stiletto or an awl to score the crease lines on your board, you can use the non-sharp edge of a #1 X-Acto knife (that's the pen-size one). Plus side of doing that is you're less likely to puncture the paper "skin" of your board.

This was very fun! I can think of soooooo many items I now want to put in a fancy hat ( or anything) box! You also fixed an issue I had with a vintage hat box I have had for 30+ years. I broke my string that was tied that fancy way of " locking" the box. I thought I had tried all the ways to put the new ribbon through the grommets, ... I did have to rewind your directions a couple of times, but hurrah, it is fixed!! Thank you. I am watching Vanity Fair also! This is the second time I have watched it and it's even better a second time !! I also am re-watching Good Omens. It's just so fun! I'm reading A Court of Thorns and Roses series, I am on book 4 of 5. It's a fun quick read before I start a new Ken Follett trilogy. I am going to listen to Good Omens while walking. I hope you and your family ( people and animals) are doing well. Today, my cat Sammy turned 3 years old. My sweet Orange Tabby is a covid kitten. With happiness, Audri

Fab video. Thank you. Might make a hat box for my other halfs tall top hat. Starting to work on my Whitby Goth outfit. Pirate themed ish. Have 2 months to put together 4 pieces. The jacket is going to be the biggest piece (and most difficult) to make. Thankfully the shirt and skirt are basically rectangles . So in theory the quickest . Probably just jinxed myself now 🤣🤣

Lynn does lovely work. Those are very easy to make and super handy...makes me almost want to wear more hats than the one I grudgingly put on so I don't change colors in the sun (which is a cheap ass one from target, so not really worthy a box and rolls up). I found a new series of books and got them because it was 8 books for one credit (gotta love omnibuses/boxed sets) called the Wysteria Witches by Angela Pepper (there are more than 8 books in the whole series, but 8 for 1 is a pretty good deal. Lots of late 90s early 00s references, lots of loving sarcasm and a 32 year old librarian and mom of a 16 year old who adores here too smart kid along with a broodingly sexy and secretive neighbor with a son who is talented and quite corvid like, a wacky aunt, an owlish librarian supervisor, a children's librarian who dyes his hair pink, and other interesting characters. It's a lot of fun. I love Good Omens. I really hope the AMPTA (I hope that's right. I'm too tired to look it up) get their collective heads out of their collective behinds and pays the writers and actors what they're worth and give up on the whole AI for writers and scanning actors for use in perpetuity. That stuff is just all kinds of icky nasty poo poo. I'm too tired to come up with 'adult' insults, so we're going with that. Anyways, I hope they let us have the wonderfulness that has to be season 3 that is residing in Neil Gaiman's head and the actor's skills (omg, the end of S2.... And how the Agreement actually hampered Aziraphale's and Crowley's ability to talk about things because they just had a 'since-you-is' relationship [since you is up in Edinburgh, why don't you...] instead of actually talking with each other.) Anyways, enough of that. Lovely walk through and very nice fabric :D

I have always watched all the same science fiction and fantasy as you do. But I’m wondering whether on America you get on Prime video ‘ The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ based on a best selling Australian novel. I have not loved a lot of productions from my country of late but this is pure quality. It features Sigourney Weaver who is one of the only American actors who has mastered our difficult accent. Wow. It it deep and quality. Would love for you to have access to it. I have watched you for years but never commented. Please have a look. 🌷✨💫

Hi there! I thank you for the amazing video, I am trying to gather the supplies to make a couple of hat boxes, ok you got me … several hat boxes! I am having a great deal of difficulty locating the foam core board in the size you have shown above. I did find some form core at Michael’s in the size shown in the video, but it was not acid free. I have a gorgeous iridescent green witches hat with rooster feathers, and a replica of Professor Mcgonagall’s hat and the last thing I want is to have the color leeched from them. Any idea where I might go for the archival version that won’t cost an arm and a leg? Yes, I know, you get what you pay for, but still, I like to save what I can where I can, Thanks!

Dangit, now I'm gonna have to make a hat just so I can make a hatbox for it. I'm thinking Ma'ls pretty floral bonnet from Firefly. To be fair I've been actively keeping an eye out for a printed pattern that's anything close to the plum or maroon background with little yellow and pink flowers, but haven't found anything the right base colour. What have I been doing lately? A landscaping job for work that's wrecked my shoulder and we're not half done yet, trying to keep my garden tomatoes off all the other produce (they're all taller than me now and running out of support, and the heirlooms are off harassing the asparagus and the mutant cherry tomatoes are climbing over the peppers while making a break for the lawn) and arguing with my new to me sewing machine (1960s Universal that has lots of interesting options), it apparently HATES the stiff cotton I used as interfacing on a very wibbly linen shirt and I need to hit the fabric store for denim needles but I need to be supervised when I go there or I spend way too much money on things I won't use for YEARS, last time I went in for skirt hooks and one colour of thread and came out with $50 of cotton voile and some cute remnants... and they didn't even have the skirt hooks, I'm still closing that skirt with a safety pin. Planned project, I've got some lovely purple linen from Pure Linen Envy that will become a Victorian skirt based on the pattern I drafted from the Keystone book. And witnessing some rabbit zoomies, apparently, as he goes sailing about two feet high over my feet for the third time. I'm sure in about thirty seconds it'll be naptime for him and he'll be flat out on his side playing deadbun, bunnies have even less stamina for zoomies than cats do.

I'm still real sad about Good Omens 2. I feel like I was dumped and have just been moping around the house. Then I started watching 'Staged' because I needed more Michael and David in my life, only to find that series 3 ends almost exactly like Good Omens 2. 😭😭😭 (i will say a it's happier, but still) Then one of my cats broke his hip, and the other is now epileptic. So now I owe the vet my first born. Additionally I'm trapped in my house due to a wildfire attempting to burn down my city. 😢 It's been a tough couple weeks. Hopefully it's clear skies on the horizon. Literally and figuratively! lol!

I just binged the Arcane Ascension books by Andrew Rowe. The first 2 are great, the 3rd is fine, the 4th is super sad and not up to the quality standards of the first 3, so I dunno if I recommend them or not. Basically, a teen goes to magic school and gets in over his head. The main character is asexual and written very well.

Interesting 50 years ago we used wall paper paste to glue up hat boxes, I made one for my Easter bonnet when we lived in the UK every year there use to be a Easter parade and I would make a new bonnet every Easter with Mom, it was one of the very few girly things I ever did as a child as I was more a tomboy growing up. That was also in the day when you could get pastel coloured toilet rolls to colour match your bathroom 😹😹😹😹which meant we had coloured toilet roll paper to make the flowers for the bonnets. I have no idea when coloured toilet rolls fell out of favour which then flowed through to the boxed tissue papers as well. To day you have to hunt down coloured tissue paper or crape paper which I have noticed is not that simple in Australia. It’s a shame we no longer have the Easter bonnet parade, it was always my favourite time of the year for just Mother Daughter time. I think it’s time to bring back the old 1950-70’ values that we had. It was such an innocent and fun time.
@Costuming_Drama
@Costuming_Drama 10 ай бұрын
Uhhhh, violently disagree. The 50’s-70’s were only “innocent” and “fun” if you were straight and white and fairly well off. For pretty much everyone else, it was a horror show where no one recognized or acknowledged all the problems of society or worked to fix them. It created a horrible gaslighting effect that we are still recovering from to this day. Gross.
