We have been getting a LOT of recommendations on how to make our 2016 Fleetwood Bounder 36E Class A motorhome drive more comfortably down the road, and the most recommended upgrade is a steering stabilizer. We decided on the SteerSafe system and recorded the whole install and test drive for you!

When we looked at our rig, I looked underneath and noticed SteerSafe was installed. I mentioned it to the seller and he asked " What's a SeerStafe?" I saw the demos when they started manufacturing this system 40 years ago. It makes a huge difference to ease of operation and safety. I love it, you will too! 😁

Brought home my first rv last week. Said to myself this isnt nearly as bad as id thought it would be. This weekend, while inspecting the rig i came accross this contraption on the front. Took me a long time on google but eventually an rv forum from the early 2000s did answer my "what are the extra springs on my rv?" Question. Thats how i found your video. Cheers, keep the shiny side up!

I had mine installed in Demming, NM by the company. They came to the park and installed the system on my Class C. I asked about maintenance and was told an occasional check that bolts were tight was all I needed. They help but when it's super windy, I still get off the road and wait it out. Great action footage!

About 5 years ago I drove from Oh to Fl and then across the south to Tx and NM. When in NM met a couple who told us about Steer Safe, which is in Deming, NM where we were staying for a while. We had it installed at the manufacturer and were so glad we did. It was so much easier driving after that. I strongly recommend Steer Safe. Ours was on a 40 foot diesel pusher and it sure helped.

We have really been enjoying it! It was definitely a night-and-day difference after putting it on. I went from "movie driving", constantly adjusting the steering, to nice and easy cruising. It's a fantastic upgrade!

Great video! I have had them on my 2012 V10 gas motorhome since 2012. I just sold it and removed and will install on my new Ford F53 chassis. I have over 77,000 miles on my original rig and definitely make for a less streeful steering as they do help keep you still going straight down the road. You also forgot to mention if you have a front tire blowout it will help you keep the rig straight so you can make a safe exit to the side of the road. If you didn't have SteerSafe the blowout will cause you to fight the rig wanting to go inthe direction of the blown tire. Good job!

Just to let you be aware off it you will still drift a little it will not get rid of the drifting completely from the wind or when you get pass by another large vehicle heads up it will move a little but not bad I love mine

I've got about 3k miles on the Steersafe system now. The reduction in wheel movement is significant. I went from "movie driving" - constantly adjusting the wheel - to a nice relaxed cruise down the road. I definitely know when trucks are passing, but it's so much better it's not even funny.

This was a very useful video... great job! What I liked best, was when you mounted your GoPro under your rig. Other than those extreme sports using the GoPro, your idea was the best I've seen! #GoPro Love watching your family's travels and adventures. Thanks for sharing. I'm getting ready to get a Class C within the next year, I hope. And a GoPro any day now! I remember when you guys reviewed the Cruise America RV's FOR SALE. They're perfectly drivable without them, but it definitely tightens things up. It would be just another component for manufacturers to maintain a warranty on and all that. Thanks for watching Cathy!

I didn't know these existed. I've been looking at the Safe-T-Plus. My primary concern is a steer tire blowout. I have a 45' Country Coach with a Tag axle. My steer tires are 385/65 R22.5. Plus it's a really heavy coach. Between the Tag and those huge balloon steer tires it really doesn't wander. Wind and Semi's don't do much either. Well, a really strong gust might push it some. Waiting to hear back from Safe-T-Plus on the mounting kit for my coach. Just exploring my options on what's out there. Thanks for posting.

Great video Brian! Improving handling of an RV is an important safety investment. Sorry about the seatbelts comment. I went back to 7:20 and you can clearly see the seatbelts on your black shirt. It rides low and didn't look like it was on but clearly it is. I like your response when it was suggested hauling a popup camper for the kids! Safe travels!

Hello Five2Go Family! I have really enjoyed your sharing your journey so far. Also, I am SO GLAD you found these and installed them. I did the same thing about three years ago after watching a video from RV Education 101. There is plenty out there about the Steer Safe but not so much about the Safety Steer even though the company has been around for a long time. Anyway, I had them installed just to be a rebel and have been extremely happy with them ever since. As you mentioned, the amount of corrective steering that needs to be made is drastically reduced. Thank you for boosting my confidence on this decision! Have you looked in to the CHF (cheap handling fix) at all for your stabilizers? That was also a great benefit at really no cost. Interesting. Would like to hear from anyone who has this long term. My only concern would be if it’s putting a lot of strain on the power steering system but I can definitely see it would help with steering stability.

There's no active strain when sitting or driving straight as the springs balance each other, so there's just some extra resistance when steering. It shouldn't be any different fundamentally than all of the other steering stabilizer systems out there and I haven't read or heard anything about them prematurely wearing out steering components.

Besides the two you mentioned, both Blue Ox and Roadmaster make steering stabilizers as well. The Blue Ox TruCenter Steering System is adjustable. I prefer that because you can turn down the resistance when you're in a parking lot and such and makes it easier when making turns. However it is not cheap. It's slightly over $1000 but I think the adjustability is worth it.

Wow, that's steep! I haven't had any issues steering at low speeds so far, so maybe these are tuned to the lower end of resistance. Is there a dial or something that you added to the dash?

Nice video and install. Hope it works long term for you but I am leaning towards the safe T plus steering stabilizer. No springs.

I liked that there was resistance added to both wheels instead of one point somewhere along the steering bar. The mechanical side of my brain sees that as potentially more stable and it may even deal with really tiny movements independently. Regardless of what system you go with, it's a huge improvement!

They're all nylon lock nuts so they should hold together pretty well. I'm planning on crawling under and checking them after my next drive but I'm sure they're fine.

Five2Go : not enough! The virus curtailed some of our travel plans, but before the nastiness hit, we went from Cleveland, OH to Springfield, IL and you want to talk about wind! But she handled it pretty well. Our next adventure is from Cleveland to Asheville, NC then up to the northern shores of Michigan WITH a car in tow. That will be a true test for sure. How are you liking your shakedown cruise?

I have never heard of these I was looking at the Safe-t-plus I see that I might have to take a look at these for sure I do like the ideal that you don't have to adjust nothing. I didn't see that they will fit the Jayco Precept 36C.

Good video, looks like beffy springs. Did you have specific torque for the bolts and nuts?

There were no torque specs. They're all nylon lock nuts so they're just installed as tightly as you can get them.

The first 70 miles with them on there were way better, and that's a really bad stretch of highway. They'll get a LOT more use in a couple weeks!

Seems simple to install...did you have to adjust your steering wheel? In the Safe-T-Plus video installation, they had to adjust the steering wheel after the steering control installation!

There's no steering adjustment after installing this unit as long as you make sure your wheels are straight when you install it. I think the other systems that use the gas strut require adjustment because it's putting a constant force on the steering bar whereas this one has the springs on either side "fighting" each other to keep the wheel straight.

Hi guys! I know this Video is a couple years old & that you've now upgraded your motorhome since, but was wondering if you were happy with the Steer Safe's performance while you had it? I've been looking at the Safe-T-Plus & the newer Roadmaster Exact Center, but I know that I did like the Steer Safe on my old rig & I'm just trying to decide if it's still a good choice or kind of an outdated product Would just like to hear your thoughts on how it performed for you. The Steer Safe made a WORLD of difference on that rig. I've never had the other style with the strut tube, but what I do know is that every time I checked the Steer Safe it was still as tight as when I installed it on day 1 and it never slipped. I like the idea of huge hunks of steel helping keep things straight vs a single little strut and some tube clamps, but that's just me 😉

The instructions state that they can go on "backwards" if the knuckle gets in the way, which it did in our case

I got that kit back in 2020 so he may have changed the instructions since then. I used it that way for 2.5 years with no issues whatsoever - it made a huge difference to how that thing handled!

It was a pretty short drive, but I can definitely tell that it's going to be way better on longer hauls. We'll find out later this month!

I was about to tell u that a long time ago as my simple advice but i decided not to coz i do not want to interfere other peoples business,im just a stranger to u guys,ive seen that stabilizer to some rvers that i met some of them say its good and the other say it sucks,i dont know,my friend Billy told me that they were having a hard times in manuevering the steering wheel..anyway god bless stay safe❤❤❤👍👍

I actually like the extra pressure on the steering wheel, it felt kind of sloppy before honestly. If this system was installed on a smaller or lighter rig it might be a bit harder to maneuver though.

Steering stabilizers of all styles have been around for a long time and I haven't heard or read about any of them causing premature steering system failure. The springs are mostly fighting against each other and tightening things up. The strut style stabilizers do exactly the same thing, just in a different way. It mostly feels like the slop is taken out of the steering wheel and things are just more responsive, it's not taking much more effort to turn at any speed.

I'll check them visually when I check the tires and I'll crawl under to check them every couple hundred miles or so. They're all nylon lock nuts so I'm not expecting anything to get loose, but you never know.

@@Five2Go You said that you would go under the rig and check the nuts and bolts every few hundred miles. Have been doing that and have you ever had to tighten them up? I love the concept, but having to crawl under the rig several times per day is more than I would want to do. Do you still feel this is necessary or do you have enough confidence in the system that you no longer need to check them so regularly?

I checked them a few times on our first drive since it was one long shot from CO to VA and nothing got loose at all. I checked them again after going from VA to FL and still nothing. I won't be checking them very frequently from here on out because I don't think they're going to move. Just a quick visual from the front to make sure the springs look good is fine and then I'll check the bolts only during oil changes probably.

....harder to turn the wheel. Will that system put more pressure on the power steering pump/steering gear etc.? Have you considered replacing/upgrading the shocks? Thx!

I don't think any of the steering stabilizers add any extra wear to the steering components, or at least no one is talking about it if that's a thing. As for the suspension components, I'm going to leave them alone for now but if something wears out I'll upgrade it. Once we're back east we won't be driving a ton so I don't want to spend too much on stuff like that.

The springs are fighting each other when the wheel turns, so it's not so much that it's harder to turn its more that there's less slop in the wheel. I can still very easily turn the wheel with one hand.

I don’t understand why the manufacturers don’t make those giants safer. They should make them with stabilizers & steer springs on them. And they should make them safe enough that your children can ride in them as well. Really turns me off to getting a class A.

There are a lot of things they could add to tighten these things up, but that's the case with all types of vehicles in all industries. It is what it is. They're not unsafe to drive without modifications like this, they just make it a lot better.

Thanks Cynthia! We're going to visit family for a bit and then stay in Florida for the winter. We don't have any concrete plans after the winter but we may head north and check out some areas we missed in the Midwest or New England.

Great product for the front. Next for the sway caused by tail wag (caused by passing trucks) look at a good track bar. www.blueox.com/chassis-performance/tigertrak-track-bars/ Something to look at is to upgrade the bushings on your sway bars. It makes them moor effective at stopping movment. I couldn't belive how well it helped on my Bounder. Moog suspension parts makes a kit. Also look at the "Cheap handling fix" for your Ford chassis.

I'm almost definitely going to do the CHF here soon and I'll look into other upgrades too. Once we're back east we won't be driving near as much so I'm trying to keep spending on this category pretty low. The steering stabilizer made a HUGE difference though!

@@Five2Go My opinion the track bar makes as big of difference or more. Definatley do the CHF and change the bushings. Cost is why I didn't throw the Koney FSD shocks in there to. They helped my ride a lot.

This was a great video, however you installed the bracket incorrectly. I followed your steps, but did not notice a difference, so I call steersafe. They had me send pics and informed me the bracket on the back of the wheel is facing the wrong way. I checked your video again, and you also have it the wrong way. I think this is a great video, but I would update with the correction for which way that bracket goes.

There's a note in the install instructions about the direction the bracket faces. If there's interference from the steering knuckle you can install it the way I did. There was no room on mine to have it face the other way so I had to flip it around. I've had it this way for two years and about 18k miles now and it has been great.

@@Five2Go That's good to hear, I am going to see if I can turn mine today. Thanks for the note on note fitting correctly the other way. I am hoping to not have a problem as my springs are not very tight, about 1 inch of the eye bolt was through before it start to get tension.

I just spun mine around, went from a tight business card to a loose credit card in the spring spacing. The one side did touch the knuckle, the now the v-notch lines up with the grease fitting. What is your spring spacing like?

That seems incredibly dangerous to me... if one those springs were to be knocked off - say by hitting something in the road - the wheel would jerk to one side which might actually cause an accident. I'll stick with the other type of system which is pretty much foolproof.

Remember: you get what you pay for! I fear you chose poorly. Safety steer is a much safer system! It is a restrictive system that is based on hydraulics. Hydraulics can only flow through the size of an orifice at a certain rate. What you installed is a system that is based on Springs! If forces are great enough they will over whelm a spring system. Hydraulic systems are always superior to spring systems. They by nature limit how fast your steering system can be affected by forces greater than you can control.. Please reconsider your choice. Your family is worth the price Deference. Very concerned about your choice. Make sure your suspension system is aligned properly and set to factory specks. Than install the safety plus system! Make sure your steering system is centered on the high point when they do the alignment. If they don’t know what that refers too. Go to a shop that knows what that means... I have found that many shops don’t know or understand how alignment systems work. It’s scary how many shops don’t know what they are doing!!! Please, for the sake of your family, switch to the safety plus system. Pay the difference and know you are protecting your family with the best system available.... please Reconsider your choice. I share this because I want your experience to be safe and uneventful. Just so you know I am a trained master mechanic. What you shared scares me greatly!! I don’t want other people to install a system that is unsafe. Pease do not take offense at what I am sharing.. I can’t stand by and have people be influenced to make dangerous decisions. I mean only to be helpful. Best wishes for you and your family. I only want you to have safe and uneventful travels. Blessings to you and your family.

I think you're overreacting a bit, but I appreciate your concern. This company has been making these systems for more than 40 years so it is far from an unproven design. Also, it's not like I *replaced* a critical system with something that could fail and send me flying off the road, all steering stabilizers are just additions and they can all fail but it's not like a wheel is going to fall off if that happens.
