Today we got a Chinese Cooking Challenge! We got Cantonese vs Mandarin! We're gonna be making a popular hong kong dessert / chinese food! They're Hong Kong Pineapple buns! They're a type of chinese bun/ chinese bread and they're commonly referred to as bolo bao.
In this challenge, we're going to be speaking in Cantonese only to read the pineapple bun recipe to Mike who speaks primarily Mandarin. We're all Chinese American/ Chinese Canadian so our Chinese isn't that good haha.

I always preheat the oven at least 15 minutes before baking anything in it. Also, if I'm baking bread, I like to spray some water into the oven or put a tray of water on the bottom rack to create steam. It makes the bread rise more when baking.

Asians never measure in cooking we just add a couple of this and that and adjust. But as far as i know in baking measurements is crucial.,

THIS IS SO GOOD LOL I was highly amused throughout the entire video 10/10 quality content I subscribed for, and being a fellow Chinese American/Chinese North American lol, I relate to the struggle of speaking my heritage language so much :c but you guys are doing great!! It's super nice to listen to videos in CANTONESE too! Growing up in a Canto household and speaking Hoisan/Taishanese at home, I could never find other speakers outside my family so it's really refreshing to hear videos made by fellow Chinese Americans (who are around my age too!!) speaking my family's tongue and being able to understand it too :') it means so much to that cultural identity part of me and I'm sure it's super meaningful for a lot of others too, so please keep on doing what you're doing!! Love the cooking challenges too (especially bc these are all foods I've loved since my childhood too!

LMAO! The baking soda can be used as a cleaning agent and or for cooking/baking purposes! It also uses to deordorize refrigeration units. So the one used for cooking/baking and for cleaning is the exact same thing

Hi guys just wanted you to know these videos are entertaining and educational. I'm trying to learn canto so just by hearing you guys break down the words, repeating it with English subtitles help so much in context. Keep up the good work and please post more of these. Maybe even do a mandarin version for the mandarin learners :)

Mike is cooking in the true Asian style, not measuring everything exactly. He's cooking the way our parents teaches us when we ask for their recipes. They would say "a little of that, about that much of this, however much you feel you need or feel like....etc"

Edward you are right! 撈一撈 is mandarin influenced. Traditionally Cantonese doesn't have the [verb一verb] structure. It would just be 撈(一)下(佢). Edward you truly know the pure Cantonese!
