Thank you so much for making this video! I have been in love with porcelain dolls for years now, and got my first blank bjd a few months ago to customize. I've had an amazing time doing so, and am considering sculpting a doll from scratch. This video was very helpful for knowing what I might be getting into. As someone who absolutely adores porcelain dolls, I truly admire you!

Thank you for posting! What kind of kiln do you use? I had a kiln from 1988 for a long time that used cones, but it looks as if you have an automatic temperature-setting system? Thanks for information.

They're so beautiful 😍💜🥰. Thank you for showing your process! I am lucky and had a very small table top kiln given to me recently. I think I'd like to make a very curvy doll first. It has been a while since I fired a kiln up and I really miss it (terracotta clay was my fav, I loved the smell). I can't wait to get started. Thank you! 💜

@@axuwu6939 not yet. The weather has been off and on here and I figured it would be better to work with the kiln in the garage when it's not freezing 😅💜. I did end up getting some paper clay in the meantime and sculpted a head for a smaller nendoroid body, that was fun!

I've adored porcelain dolls since my Grandma gave me one around eight and would love to try making one myself. But I'm not quite sure how I'd be able to fire the parts so frequently as I doubt I could afford a kiln, would it be possible to use an oven?
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, porcelain needs way higher temperatures than an oven could reach. About 1220 celsius (~2228 Fahrenheit). But you can find ceramics workshops where you could fire the porcelain parts.

@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls 2 жыл бұрын
Not from porcelain, but you can sculpt one from air-dry clay or polymer clay. This way you won't need molds.

Thank you so much for this nice presentation! Could you tell me at what temperature and for how long do you need to bake the painted clay (each layer)? I have never worked with china paints before, I only knew engobe (which is powder made from clay and pigment that you mix with water). Thank you so much for your answer and a nice yt channel!
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
It depends on the paint you use, so you need to fire the test tile before painting the doll. Different colors fire differently as well. But the range is usually something in between 680°C - 715°C

Wow amazing video and such interesting process overall. Your dolls are absolutely beautiful especially the one in the hot red wig because of the contrast with the skin colour. I have a question regarding the doll assembling. Why do you use springs instead of rubber elastic like they do for non porcelain bjd? Does it have added benefits for the doll movement? Also I notice that you have added some kind of fabric layer between the limps to avoid too much rubbing? What kind of material is that?
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Springs hold the tension better and don't lose that for a long time. If you use elastic, you have to re-string the dolls after a few years because they become loose. The layer in between the joints is very thin leather. ☺

Will this method work with resin as well? Would it be possible to do the “pour out” method with resin? I don’t have a kiln, so I’m trying to find a material that won’t require one.
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
No, not really. Resin requires silicone molds. It also hardens in the mold, so the process is different in that regard.

Hi, for different face features you need different molds, right?
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
Mostly yes. You can make some changes by carving the bisque fired porcelain. For example change the lip shape. But if you want very visible change of the features, you would need to make a different prototype and mold.

What about the head / eyes. HOW do I install glass eyes in a porcelain head...? I am not interested in going the route of 'painted' eyes, only GLASS eyes. It seems I will need to forget using porcelain for the head and stick to using super sculpy. I would LIKE to use porcelain for the head as well, but I cannot figure out 'how' to put eyes into a head unless I cut a great big hole in the back of the skull, which THEN cannot be fixed properly.
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls Жыл бұрын
There are some artists who use glass eyes and use the same technique as with resin dolls. Meaning you create a removable magnetic cap on top of the head. Then insert the eyes securing with some putty.

Can I keep the doll as a air dry clay doll or is it better to have it in porcelain? I am a student in arts and wish I could spend more money on doll making and have tried since a kid and never succeed. I also don't have money for all of that... I am wondering if I should subscribe to your online lessons but I am worried it might only teach me about this process and not how to do dolls on a budget
@Nymphaidolls
@Nymphaidolls 8 күн бұрын
You can keep the doll from air-dry clay. My BJD masterclass is about sculpting the doll from clay. Then you can cast it in other materials or leave it like this. It’s possible to paint it with acrylics and soft pastels, seal it with varnish and have a finished doll (painting steps are not included in the class). All the materials I use are listed in one of the course pages. If you can’t find it, just email me and I’ll send the link. ☺️
