Carving out white maibachi using a plastic rod, specifically a Uxcell Polyoxymethylene(POM) rod.
Super difficult project, about 12 hours of manual work. POM definitely isn't meant to be tooled.
I would NOT RECOMMEND you try this yourself, save yourself from the hours of strain and blisters.
Materials:
- Polyoxymethylene rod (2cm dia.)
- Block plane
- Sandpaper (50, 60, 100, 150, 400, 600, 2000)
- Meguiar's PlastX (Plastic polish)

Hi, I was wondering if there is like, an actual guide on making maibachi? Trying to look around, but I don't really understand on how it actually works, especially the line markings, and how much to carve down. I did make a few back in 2014, but the end result turned out quite poor due to inconsistency cuts as I was using a knife cutter to carve the wood...
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 2 жыл бұрын
There's no guides in English, and sometimes its just people going by word of mouth. I was self taught by watching hours of Japanese tutorials and have been making bachi for as long as I've been playing, even then, the technique can always change, and Im still improving mine. First step is you definitely don't want to use a knife, look for a "block planer" or "block plane". If thats not an option for you for some reason, try buying a GOOD rough metal file, or metal rasp. These will not carve, but will be strong enough to get the job done with enough time, and so it's more of a last resort (some countries can't easily buy planers). To explain the purpose of the line markings, it's more for consistency between both sticks. You use that line to start your carve on that spot, then you mimic the same thing on the other stick. As you go, the carving line goes further back and the carve will be longer. Doing this step process creates a pointed taper. These days I still do line marks but I do less and WILL go off course, since I can eyeball the bachi, so both match much better. One of these days I would like to make a video so others can learn too

Hey just a question for you Kevin, would it be possible to just use really rough sandpaper and sand it down to the desirable diameter as I do not have access to a block plane. Please respond to this as fast as possible. I look forward to creating a pair of Bachis myself. Thank you and have a wonderful day!
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 2 жыл бұрын
It would be incredibly difficult to only use sandpaper, I'm talking multiple hours. Using anything to carve would immediately be better, that's why investing in a block plane is important. You could use a knife to carve away, but it's really dangerous so try it at your own risk.
@forgotten1417
@forgotten1417 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kev2o2 Yeah, but unfortunately Amazon isn't really an option in Singapore and most hardware shops don't seem to have block planes. Knives seem dangerous and fairly inconsistent from my personal experience, any idea what other tools I could use for wood?
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 2 жыл бұрын
In that case I think you should look for a Metal Rasp or Metal File. You'd still be sanding away wood, but solid metal will scrape away wood MUCH faster.

Hi Kevin! I have a question. How do you make the bachi lighter? I’m considering on making this, and I want the bachi to be really light so I can do some bounce on the tatacon. If you could respond as quickly as possible ill be happy to talk to you
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 3 жыл бұрын
That's a difficult question, there always has to be a balance. You can bachi lighter by carving them thinner, but then they will become handle heavy and uncomfortable to use. So you need to consider the density and weight of the stick before carving too thin.
@user-br3uf9cj2g
@user-br3uf9cj2g 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Do I just have to find a good weight and density of a stick?
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-br3uf9cj2g well, there's not many sizes available of acrylic rods. What I mean is; while working, it might not be possible to make them as light as you'd like, since it's naturally heavy, and you need the bachi to be balanced where your index finger lays
@user-br3uf9cj2g
@user-br3uf9cj2g 3 жыл бұрын
In your other video ( the clear bachi) was the bachi heavy? I might try that type of material (it also looked like a pain cutting the bachi) and can I use wood?
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-br3uf9cj2g Both these and the acrylic ones are heavier than wood. And wooden tools? Yes you should be able to use that, your blade needs to be very sharp however

Hey I was curious for the physical drum is it worth going through the trouble to mod? I'm srs about to save 500$ for the quality drum lol
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 4 жыл бұрын
Would you rather spend $70 or $500? Grab the Tatacon if you're just trying out the game and want to get a feel for it. If you can personally justify buying a $500 video game drum, get the Taiko Force lvl5 for the closest arcade experience possible.
@Kev2o2
@Kev2o2 4 жыл бұрын
Tatacons work fine even without modding, but buying one can kinda be a shot in the dark, you never know how it will be until you've already thrown your money at it.

@@Kev2o2 Yeah thats true. I got Taiko like a month ago and its taken over my life, lol. I got the Hori drum yesterday and was kinda disappointed. It would be a hefty cost but I'm think of creating my own taiko set up to almost mimic the arcade experience.
