Making Spruce and Fir Firewood and Some Deer Footage -E187

Hi everybody. We need a bit more firewood for the sugar shack so we thought we would process some softwood logs through the Hakki Pilke firewood processor. We also needed to pressure wash the Kubota B2601 and the Kranman ATV logging trailer in preparation for Winter. While we were at it, we cleaned up the Toyota Tundra, the Kubota x1100c RTV and the firewood gear. Ranger is in fine form in this video and we have some deer footage from the hunting blind at the end!

Great video Jason. All cleaned up. Ready for winter. My son and I just kind of got caught up to date for winter. So it’s sorta take it easy next week end and enjoy some time just to think about a project, instead of running around like the Tasmanian Devil. 🤭🤭 Have a great Sunday. 🪵🪓🔥🇨🇦🇨🇦👋👍🏻🚜

Great video Jason- Winter prep is so important. I would be curious to learn more about your undercoating process. It’s something I’m planning on starting next year.

Hi Richard, I had a local shop undercoat the truck for $300. They did a very thorough job but I did have to hand wash it all to remove the overspray!

Winter prep, I am there now! You had good weather for doing so. Last weekend was our pool. That reminds me that I need to clean the deck of our JD Zero Turn too! I've seen yours in the background! This softwood is going to be put to good use. It was no longer good for lumber I guess! Thanks!

VERY happy! We have the HD10 Mossy Oak (2019). It has a smooth ride, and the power of the engine (82hp) is 2x what I need to haul the log trailer full. It got a High and Low mode. The front and rear axle can be locked, and the front axle can be disengaged. Which is ideal for riding in summertime, on lawn. The reverse is LOW, so no problem going in reverse with a good haul. Even on LOW, you can reach easy 40km/hr. Will run 30km/hr @ 5000rpm on low. It will reach 100km/hr in High, no problem. That engine is meant for constant 4-6k rpm, which is very different to a diesel engine. In fact, nothing really happen below 3k with such an engine. Traction is the only thing I'd like to improve in winter time. That is where the tracks would be nice. That does not refrain me from hauling a full load of wood uphill in fluffy snow. Just need some technique.... (aka pedal to the metal). Thanks!

Interested in the log trailer/tractor combo. How much can it haul and what lengths is the wood on it

Hi there. You can bring out about 1/2 cord with the trailer. Most of my stuff is usually 12’ long but I have handled 16’ and longer in the past. Check out some of our other videos to see how it handled some 16’ saw logs. Hope this helps. Jason

Hi Jason. Noticing the power pack unit on the processor, are only compatible with the hakki pilke processors or could they be used on any other PTO driven processors?

Hi there, I’m no mechanic but I’m sure there would be a way to do it. You might try reaching out to the log father on KZfaq. He runs a firewood business and is a mechanic. He might be able to point you in the right direction. Tell him I sent you!

ln Boreal forest areas, Birch is the go-to (white) But Birch needs a season to sit to get the most out of it. Not everyone is near Birch stands as well, Larch offers good BTU (not Tamarack, Larch) But alot like Birch, not everyone is near Larch or Birch stands. So majority of firewood for Boreal'ers ends up being lodgepole or jack pine. I guess white, engel, sitka spruces and doug fir are okay to burn if the wood condition is not great for other utilization, but man l wouldnt want to be burning things like black spruce or balsam, just because of their annoyingly longer drying, and more tinge residues they leave behind. Aspen? Well aspen has alot of issue indeed with quality, the BTU of course disappointing.

Interesting to hear about what others are using for firewood. We have been using the left over sawmill slabwood (spruce/fir) for our maple syrup boiler this year. Seems to work pretty well but you need to tend the fire quite often!
