There is currently 39 inches clearance in front of the stove and 30 inches to the side. I should warn that this is less than what is recommended in the installation manual for the Nippa stove, but there wasn't much I could do about that, given the dimensions of my room. The side of the stove gets hot but the wood of the benches doesn't get too hot to touch, so well below the combustion point. I did recently add a heat shield on the side of the stove with the 30 inch clearance and I'd recommend that. After using them for a year, I plan to widen my benches and that will really make the heat shield a must. I also plan to add a higher level bench on the wall in front of the stove to get us up higher into the heat and the steam. The timber frame is pretty, but the high sloped ceiling isn't really ideal from a sauna design perspective. The higher benches will also get our feet up to the level of the stones, which is what is considered the ideal by sauna experts. The higher benches will actually improve the clearance in front of the stove... stay tuned.

In my shed to sauna conversion I will actually end up with less than 24” of clearance from the stove which causes me to worry but since you mentioned a heat shield of some sort, I wonder what that is and you got it. That’s probably what I’ll need as well. Also I wish my ceiling was lower than the existing 8”+ thus needing to build my benches much higher than usual

@@2008romboy my stove is a Nippa and I bought the purpose built shield they sell as an option for the stove. Definitely build your benches high to get up into that heat and steam.
