I have several Beaver Craft carving/whittling tools; I'm no pro - I just enjoy it as an occasional hobby and they work well for me. What I have learned is that - unlike general wood working hand tools - never let carving/whittling tools get so dull that they ever need a visit to the sharpening station (oil stones, diamond plates or whatever); strop them as soon as a drop off in performance is noticed, which could be every twenty minutes or so under heavy use. I also have a Mora that I love using for general crafting in the workshop and and stick carving (walking sticks, etc).

A California Coast Live Oak fell nearby and I harvested a piece. Then I ripped it (by hand) into flitches. I tried planing it. It was impossible. Never had that much trouble with a piece of wood, even after careful sharpening. This was two years ago and I set aside the flitches to dry, even though they seemed dry. I'm going to try it again sometime soon. I can't believe you can work with that wood, unless it is a different species.

I had to look on Wikipedia: The name live oak comes from the fact that evergreen oaks remain green and "live" throughout winter, when other oaks are dormant and leafless. The name is used mainly in North America. All the best from the Netherlands!

Just catching your channel for the first time. You were mentioned in a recent video on Steve Ramsey’s channel. What a wonderful knife!! I thought for sure you were grabbing the blue tape to cover up the wound. Makes sense to use it to prevent another one. Electrical tape is better for cuts anyways because it stretches to form to where your cut is. Lol!!!

How is the carving knife you just made different from a marking knife? Genuinely curious.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
a marking knife is a knife used to make knives and comes in MANY different designs. most making knives are only bevels on one side so they can sit flat on the work. but some people do like a marking knife with a bevel on both sides like this. for my work this would not make a good marking knife as it would like to wander a bit more having so fine a point.

Might I ask - what tool(s) are you using to reference the exact middle of something? I can’t figure that out, even after watching several of your videos in which you have so done. Thanks!
@WoodByWright

I use a marking gauge. If you mark from one side and then mark from the other and then put the pan just in between those two marks then you'll have a middle of the board.

Lovely watching you work. Interesting to see you using epoxy for the glue up, any advantage over woodglue + sawdust?
@WoodByWright

Epoxy will hold the steel much better. Wood glue would have very little effect on it. Wood glue is fantastic for wood to wood but doesn't really hold well against much anything else.

@@WoodByWright An alternative I’ve seen is to drill into the handle, use a dowel (or make one from the same wood as the handle), split the dowel and shave it down a little so the tang fits and then use expos just in the hole and on the tang. Might be worth a go?

@@margaretkrantz1469 that too lol! Though i use duct tape for that when I'm out of super glue. My "First-aid kit" in my shop is very misleading. Its pretty big and heavy. But when you open it there's a note taped to the inside of the lid that says, "You did it again, didn't you... dumbass!" And it only contains a roll of paper towels, duct tape, a couple tubes of super glue and a small bottle of iodine.
