I love love love my makita 36 volt. It’s perfect, smooth and strong. Previously had the Dewalt 60 volt. Batteries are ridiculous was looking to get a 2nd one and was priced at 240. Home Depot had the Makita 36 volt for 250 w/ bag, dual charger and two batteries. On top of that two extra free batteries! For 250 (not including tax) nothing will ever beat that deal.

I did the exact same. Had the dewalt. Loved it, super super powerful, but got the makita on that deal and ended up selling the dewalt after using them side by side. Dewalt def more powerful, but makita much nicer/smoother to use. I'm wondering how the new XGT 40v will stack up against the dewalt in power. I would love it to have the dewalts insane power with the makitas smoothness. @Tools & Stuff, if you have the dewalt could you comment or compare the dewalt 60v to the makita 40v?

Gret review. I do have comment about behind the handle vs not. I am from North America and a Real hardcore framer. In the western part of the US, we use the behind the handle type saws, in the east they tend to use the regular or in my onion weird awkward over the top handled saws. Real :) Framers only use behind the handle saws for everything. Production is everything and if you're taking lumber over to sawhorses to do your cross cuts you are wasting a lot of time. if you're bending over weird to use a "regular" circular saw to lay the saw flat to cut and having to push the saw through with your arm that's a lot of energy and again a waste of time. Instead with a behind the handle let the weight of the saw fall through the board on a crosscut. the saw may be heavier to reach out or overhead to cut something, but the difference is that I can see what I'm cutting even with a compound miter type of cut. Using a behind the handle is like using a shovel, you need to get our ass behind it where you have the most control where over the top is more energy and less control. Yes, you could say it's a matter of what you get use to but when you have a saw in your hand every day and you don't waste time taking boards to the sawhorses or even more crazy, a framer with a miter saw you'll agree with me and never even want to own a over the top handled saw. Skill hit it when they created the Mag and Makita got it even more right when they came out with the hypoid in the 80's.

Great video, exactly what i was looking for!! Ive used the 36V saw as my "daily" for the last 4 years and its still cutting strong as ever. But its time to switch over to the 40V line and have just ordered the rear-handled 40v saw. As a 3rd Gen California carpenter the 36V was the first cordless saw able to drag me away from my beloved Mag77. I remain impressed by its longevity onsite. Thanks again for a great video.

Great review! an d excellent points about the pros and cons between the top handle and rear handle saws. I think the Skil heritage is too strong in the US and the production framers favoring certain fast cutting techniques, but as you said the top handles are clear winners in crosscuts and other situations, and if you are not in a hurry there are plenty strong cordless top handle saws to rip decently too. My main saw was a very powerful corded worm drive Dewalt but when I got my cordless right side blade saw and started to watch videos of Japanese, Australian and other master craftsmen using this saws and adjusted my body position, material and jig holding techniques accordingly I started to realize all the advantages this setup has and I don't think I'll ever want to go back to a rear handle or left side blade saw. But now the important thing is.... What's in the box???!! lol

From what I've gathered, cutting 2x4's in a rear handle saw - as you said, turning the board at and angle and cutting down is the preferred technique - you spend the energy guiding & steering rather than pushing the saw so you get more accurate cuts 🙂

Like not including a slot for the arbor wrench on the 36v model. Literally the only thing I've found wrong with it so far but I just got mine late last month. No need for 40v here. I'd likely never want a smaller tool like a drill/driver with a comically huge 40v brick hanging off the bottom. Likewise for the new LXT X-lock grinder I just purchased....that thing is heavy enough as it is with one 5.0AH LXT battery.

Great video and the XGT is a very powerful saw, as I have had a chance to demo it for a few days. It is lighter than the 36v LXT, but if one feels the LXT is too heavy to use, then they are in the wrong line of work. It comes with a nice blade and cuts smoothly. You will feel the difference. My only gripe (not really a gripe) is the size of the battery and the placement on top of the saw. Both of these saws are definitely made more for the prosumer than the average DIY'er. So, should one upgrade if already vested in the 18v line? I don't see a reason why, but there are toolheads that always need the latest and the greatest. I have well over a dozen Makita 18v tools with 28, 18v 5.0Ah batteries, and 12 dual quick chargers. They all perform as expected, never failing or needing service. Specs-wise, the 40v line should be kicking some butt, but I simply have too much time and money invested along with real-world experience knowing the long-term quality of my 18v line to simply cast them aside for much more expensive tools, though well worth it I'm sure, for the newbie just getting into the trades. Remember, its just a tool, used to get from point A to point B. If your line of work requires the extra power from the 40v XGT, then go for it and build your collection from there. It's a Makita, so you should get long-term value from them.

I work highrise forming construction. We've been using the same 36volt saws for two years straight day in day out with no issues. It seems the 40volt outperforms the older model but with literally no problems after two years and counting it wouldn't make sense to leave the 36volt platform and jump to the 40. I have the 40 volt worm drive. If youre curious about the cons of the saw ive nopticed a couple tyhings although i still love it andf think its an upgrade. 1. For some reason i can get a battery to overheat once in awhile when im ripping when the lxt doesnt or i havent seen do yet. 2. The 4.0 battery doesnt seem to last as long vs the lxt versions. I dont know why it just doesnt. Im assuming higher rpms drain the battery and also if your pushing it the torque increase probably drains the battery. A tip i found usefgul is, use makita blades they are thinner so the saw doesnt have to work as much. In this case the 4.0 battery can last you almost all day.
@brodycloud3405
@brodycloud3405 2 жыл бұрын
@@colekidd2 Two 5.0 lxt batteries has about 25% more energy than 1 4.0 xgt. So if you're able to make the lxt last for 8 hours the xgt should last about 6 1/2 hours under the same circumstances. But like you also mentioned spinning the blade at higher RPM and Torque will also end up using more energy overall. Also since the lxt x2 has 20 cells overall vs 10 cells in the xgt x1 you're effectively drawing half the energy per cell so they simply don't heat up as much.
@colekidd2
@colekidd2 2 жыл бұрын
@@brodycloud3405 Yup. I went into the xgt platform full throttle believing they’re marketing a little too much. “Outlast, Outpowers, Outsmart” Designed for high demand applications.” The xgt tools don’t take on high demand applications” significant more than lxt. Basically the lxt counterpart is still right beside them is what i’m saying. What an lxt tool can’t do an xgt really can’t either. But when it comes to regular applications they are sweet!

The 36v is a beast when cross cutting really wet timber, but man it's heavy for swinging around. Otherwise, I like a top handle. I'm not interested in buying into 40v; the 18v gear does everything I need it to. It's a heap of expense for a more powerful cordless. Yours is easily the best channel for Makita nuts like myself. And I trust your reviews as you don't have a sponsorship. The membership thing I have mixed feeling about. One hand, I can't fault a guy for wanting a couple extra bucks for his efforts. The other hand, Makita is getting a shit ton of free advertising time outa you. I probably wouldn't pay for a membership because I work my ass off for a the few pennies I earn. Any extra I try and give to those in need. I don't know what kind of stranglehold a tool company has over a creator that is sponsored by them. Is it worth it? One thing is, they got plenty of dough, and tools... I've been cutting old growth fir in an 1890s house and the 18v bogs kinda often. Modern lumber cross cuts are no problem. My 18v impact had trouble driving screws into this wood fairly often, someone notched every floor joist and I had to drive about 2 dozen screws into a steel plate over every notch. 1.5" screws drive fine but 2"+ about 1 in 4 get stuck. I got the 40v impact and no problem, so was interested to see how the 40v saw is. It's too bad I wasn't aware of the 40v as I got the dual 18v last year for this project, but the difference doesn't seem worth it to upgrade.

Wondering if you could comment on the smoothness of the new xgt compared to the lxt. I recently sold my dewalt flexvolt rear handle saw and replaced it with the lxt. Not nearly as powerful as the dewalt, but a lot smoother to use. Just felt nicer, cut smoother, and easier to cut accurately. Did you feel the XGT keeps these characteristics and/or improves on them over the lxt or does it lose some of this in favor of more power?

All saws are somewhat illogically different. So top handle saws will, apparently, shoot dust the same direction the blade is, but back handle ones will go the opposite direction. This just makes no sense (even if it makes this much more usable for a right-handed users than the top handle left side blade saws). Still can't find anything fitting my needs in the XGT wood saw lineup. Perhaps the HS012 left-side blade will have to do, coz buyig different batteries for a right-side blade one seems like a much worse option. Also, Lidl (Parkside) has an option for about 1/5 of the price, including the battery ;\

I've got one of the kits with multiple flexible dust extraction connectors. One adapter lives with my Makita circ saw full time. If I need that size for something else, I'll just buy another.

Bought the Metabo HTP. with 36 volt battery and charger on sale for 199. I am thinking from size of battery that it is 36 nominal ( after initial voltage drop down) and that the Makita is also 36. after initial drop down from 40. This marketing ploy seems to have come about from DeWalt rating their 18v. ( nominal) as 20 volt so others followed suit. Like just found out Kobalt' s 24 volt are actually 21 in non- peak mode.This might clear up some confusion here and is one reason to stay away from marketing brands like DeWalt that have really.muddied the waters previously much clearer with 12, 14.4, 18 etc.
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Жыл бұрын
12 volt is actually 10.8v. And makita already had a 36v system and an 18v x2 36v system so to not confuse it with those they went with 40v.

Teeth seem to be pointing the wrong way. Possible interference from a speights or two too many? Haha P.s. if you ever have to cut poly insulation that's the best way to do it. I'd only suggest to use an old junk blade with no teeth, and an old saw if you have one. Melts right through the stuff.

I do it in many videos... deliberately... kind of like easter eggs for the hardcore fans, and to wind up others. Definitely got nothing to do with speights.
