Generating speed to gain more distance off the tee is the holy grail of golf. I can't even tell you how many students want to jump right into full speed swings with the driver right off the bat.
The issue for most amateurs is that they're trying to generate more club speed in ways that ultimately create more tension in their bodies. Tension and speed do not mix.
This episode was edited from our live stream, which had some audio issues. 99% of the issues have been fixed for this post. Thank you for your patience as we come up the learning curve.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.
You can learn step by step online with Mike at malaskagolf.com. Follow The M-System to develop the skills you need to become a complete player.

This, Zen Golf, AMG Pro vs Am and Golfsidekick are all KZfaq gold. The first thing they should teach after a decent grip and stance is weight shift and relaxation to allow the arms to come through as if you're throwing a ball. So much goes wrong after that and it's just sticking plasters.

Mike this video has helped greatly. It helped to understand how to utilize my body. I’m fused in my back s1 through L4. I’m right handed with my right shoulder being titanium and my left shoulder was torn up in VN and surgery done at the end of 1967. I will soon have my left shoulder also replaced. I’m 73 and started playing golf 14 months ago. I do a lot of stretching. I play 18 twice a week. I have golf net (10x10x10) in the backyard that I hit into daily. I’m an avid golf video watcher and book reader. I have improved to the point that my last 25/30 rounds I’m in the high 80’s (one 85). With my limitations (nerve damage in my legs due the back injury and surgery, and shoulder issues) over the years I’ve learned to live with pain. When watching your videos, I was able to better understand how to adapt my swing, hit straighter, hitting more fairways along with adding distance

I have wasted the last 2 years of golf due to lessons from a “Core” focused pro. This season went back to basics and your presentation gives me a target to work through the winter. In particular aside from the simplicity of the bands, the concept of letting gravity allow the club to drop to initiate the swing will help me tremendously! Thanks for the quality messaging!

I just started playing golf about 6 months ago and started watching him around two months ago and my game has elevated like crazy. I used to be a power lifter and still have good strength but I found out pretty quick that strength is not everything, especially if you don’t know how to use it correctly. I changed everything I was doing and now I’m playing better than my friends are and they’ve been playing for years Lol Mike is a beast in his teachings, everything makes so much since and it’s easy to learn. The man makes the game so much simpler. I’ll tell you how much better I’m doing, not only my accuracy is on point but my drive ski rocketed like insane. Where I used to use a 9 or an 8 iron, now I’m beastin it with my 56 with no problems. Thanks Mr Malaska! You da man!

I've been playing golf for 65 years and this is the best explanation for speed I've ever seen. Surprisingly, the one arm swing drills revealed to me how the 'left' arm is supposed to work. Mine was always fighting with the right and not allowing it to set properly! I always viewed your approach as 'laying off' too much so I would cup my left wrist and close the face at the top. Because of your explanation I don't worry now and am able to put the power back in my right hand...where it belongs. My distance is back but more importantly I'm able to be more consistent, knowing now, how to take it back properly (with the left) and set the club. This video can help anyone. Thank you!

Started to read and watch Manuel de la Torre regarding the golf swing. Last year, I played the best golf of my life. Hit the ball well, didn’t miss one round with a bad back or a sore knee. A few days ago, I found your site. Both have very similar philosophies. Your description is a little more detailed than Manuel’s but still very similar. I now have a folder with videos of Manuel and of you; I’ve deleted all other “instructional videos”. The only negative I have is that it took me so long to find you two guys!!!!!!!! Thank you for making the game enjoyable again. Swing thoughts: see the ball, address the ball, hit the ball, find the ball, repeat as needed.

This is the most comprehensive explanation of the golf swing a person could squeeze in to an hour ... and THAT'S THE POINT!! I love the famous quote, "If you can't explain something clearly you don't understand it." Mike has accumulated a level of mastery as it applies to the golf swing and he demonstrates that by how clearly he is able to articulate it. This teaching incorporates the thinking of others I appreciate e.g. Jimmy Ballard, Jim Flick, Monte Scheinblum, and brings it all together in a compelling fashion.

We all have that one quote we like to frame and hang on the wall. Mine has always been, "There is a big difference between a powerful effort and effortless power." I have also always been fascinated by watching Fred Couples swing a golf club. It looks like he's just taking a practice swing, but they call him Boom Boom! He is the essence of fluid, graceful, effortless power. If you want to begin to understand this silly game, PLEASE listen to this guy! There is a big difference between a powerful effort and effortless power. He is unlocking the secret of that for you here. The only thing I would add to what Mike is saying is this........RELAX!!!!! Don't try so hard. Don't "grip it and rip it.......grip it and whip it." Try it. You'll see. Hey Mike, you've got it buddy, keep it up. Thanks for doing this.

Just all body with the arms staying stiff. One swing I ended up with my backside to the camera, lol. I hit a driver 190 in the air with as much effort as I can muster. The embarrassment of watching that recorded swing earlier this week was a good precursor to watching this video! Thanks Mike. The info in this video is on a par with the wisdom of the legendary Harvey Penick; no mechanics, just concept. I get so tied up in the mechanics of the swing and try to repeat body positions of the pros. I went to the range this day and just swung the club with relaxed arms and let my body do what it has to do to facilitate the weight of the club swinging around my body. Amazing results. Relaxing the arms and letting them swing allowed me to feel swing path for hitting draws, fades or straight shots. I could also feel my hands for hitting low, normal or high shots. Thank you Mr. Malaska for guiding me to find my natural swing.

This is great , many thanks Sir, I have been taught to be a robot with an over focus on exactly the things you have pointed out as problematic, to the point that I am so concerned with execution that I am contracting everything. This helps me put it all together and.....Relax the chain.

I read a book about athletic training (non sport specific) that provided me a lot of good information for my golf game and one of the statements in that book that has really stuck with me was this; "Relaxed muscles move faster than tense muscles." It is CRITICAL to golf to keep tension out of the arms, shoulders and back. I'm just starting to regularly shoot 80 but I still don't hit the ball very far compared to those I play with and compared to how far I should for my age and fitness level, so this is my main area of focus for next season. I really like this man and the way he communicates, so I am going to follow his methods and see how it goes!
