Earlier this spring I spent the afternoon with Eric Cogorno ( / ericcogornogolf ) at Superstition Mountain. We covered a series of topics. This conversation about hip movement in the full swing is one of the most important concepts I think every golfer must understand.
You can see more great videos from this series with Eric on his channel as well.
Learn step by step online with Mike at malaskagolf.com. Follow The M-System to develop the skills you need to become a complete player.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

When you golf at a high level, you become a new type of human being. I'd have to say golf is the best game for anyone looking to learn about life. Can you do it? Most can't. I can. I bust my ass off researching, hitting thousands of balls. I will always have callous on my fingers because of that and guitar. I can't remember the last time I got angry at someone. I literally have a positive perspective about anything I do, regardless of the first perspective.

I have to agree with Andrew and a lot of the comments that this thought that leads to the action of pulling your left hip back and out of the way is golf gold. When I practice this with a half swing, I am getting almost the same distance as my old full swing. Thank you so much for this video Mike and Eric!

Remarkable video. Mike's explanation of how we don't really see a golf swing struck a memory gong in my brain: 1973. The great Sam Snead is warming up for thirty minutes right in front of me on the practice tee of the US Open at Oakmont. And the thing that strikes me is how definitive each segment of his swing is. I had never seen this before nor since. A series of inner moves that makes the whole thing work. He repeats the same slow guided action on each and every swing, the same measured timing on each and every move. It is just not something you can really see in old videos. But today, Mike shows us how to make one such move in such an eloquent, beautiful way that I'm already on my condo deck training my left leg how to turn the left hip back. Like Eric said, it makes six other things work better. So grateful to Eric and Mike for your wisdom and generosity. Deepest appreciation.

I stumbled upon this old video whew awesome stuff man. Had a great half round and couldn't quite figure out why. I was trying whole 'left hip back' thing but also assuming there were multiple ways to rotate hips. Since my tendency can be to push hips aggressively toward target thereby ending up with an open club face, I then tried rotating hips with belt buckle or by using right side. Never could duplicate that half round but blamed it on everything else (tight grip, lack of focus etc). Then lo and behold I irritated by SI joint on the right side by rotating hips purposefully instead of letting it happen like video states. Very much a eureka moment for me with all the things I have tried and failed. Great stuff and blessed to be able to access it. Thanks Mike.

Ive been struggling with early extension and getting stuck under the plane because my right hip fires forward - the only way I could feel a "turn". I have been hitting right blocks and snap hooks for years. My timing had to be perfect to play well. I took your feel to the range today and it instantly changed everything. Better contact and compression and hitting a baby fade - something ive never been able to do. I videoed myself and no more early extension! Juat gone! I also hit 3 large buckets of balls, which I never do because my lower back starts hurting after one. I had zero pain! This was the single best lesson ive ever seen. You have permanently changed the way i think about turning. THANK YOU!!

Hi Mike, have watched your vidioes for about a year now, after not playing for 16 years, I'm now 64. I have been a professional swim squad coach for a couple of decades here in Australia. I ve met coaches in swimming and golf, that teach everthing postionally, I can't go with that, the action s of both sports are fluid and all drills should be fluid to create correct positions in the movement, not positions, to create motion, join the dots so to speak, it doesn't, and can't work . Absolutely love your work, mike😊

14:27 to 15:19 is pure gold. I just did that 👆. Today Aug25th finally had eureka moment of lower body!! As soon as take away occurs, I'm moving force to the left leg like a pedal gas. When I'm almost completing back swing (with my right hip out of the way) I hit the gas pedal 👉push back (feel my left hip out of the way ) and my arms and hands goes down and club head out. Eureka! Finally felt combining lower body and upper body for the very first time! Hitting effortlessly Pw 150yrd bombs, 45°flying high balls with that punch👊 like the pro's. So happy🥳🥳🥳. Many thanks Mr. Malaska for teaching me through all the videos. Victor from Brazil 🇧🇷 🙌

This discussion relates back to Mike's feel your toes balance advice at setup and going back. I see complimentary forces. As you swing down at speed, you've got your arms and club creating outward force towards the ball as they get out in front of you. If you don't pull back with your left hip, this throws your balance off. To keep your balance, the force moving your hip back has to match the force of the arms/club coming down and pulling you forward. Imagine swinging a kettle bell. If you don't counteract its weight by moving your hip back, the weight will throw you off balance. In your swing, your right hip is moving forward as the left moves back, so when the centrifugal force of your swing has stopped your weight is still centered over your feet. I just took a 10lb barbell with a hand on each end and started tracing a short swing arc. Your left hip just naturally pulls back to counteract the weight. Since your left hip is at the front of the kinetic chain, moving it actively vs just complimentarily pulls the hands and clubs through faster to maintain balanced forces.

Mike, as a Certified Natural Movement Coach I would say this video is right on. What you call “straight line forces” is actually referred to as the Sagittal plane which is where 90% of human movement happens and that’s why pushing the hips back works so well. It’s how we’re programmed to move. When I coach I know that almost all injuries happen when force is applied in the Frontal (horizontal) and Transverse planes which is where almost all modern golf instruction is working from these days. Great video which will help improve your viewership (it certainly helped me) and reduce potential injury.

So I’ve watched these segments before but never really bought into it. Yesterday I decided to commit one whole range session to this left hip pushing back as the club goes into and through impact - wedges through to driver. Boy does this help with early extension! Just remember that the longer and heavier the club, the more force is pushed away from your hands as it goes through the impact zone. You will need to apply a counter force - as Mike suggested through your lead leg to hip socket - to maintain stability or stable base (lower body). This is a whole new feeling than simply ‘rotating’. I can really feel the force the moving club exerts especially driver. The results were fades all day for me. On video I was able to get that left hip back on the line and ‘rotating’ out of the way for my arms to get through. I’m a chronic lower back pain guy and the HUGE bonus is that it’s not sore as I expected (and used to). Trust me as I was waiting for it...even this morning as I’m typing this long winded message. Sorry but I just wanted to thank you for sharing your concepts to the golfing world. Props to ya Mike!

Have been playing golf now for almost 48 years ( less 12 years on tour caddying in Oz & Europe ) and the biggest problem I've ALWAYS had that has been the result of poor technique, especially in relation to weight transfer is that no matter what I've tried I always still spun out or stepped away on my lead foot, and despite this I still managed years ago to get down to an 8 handicap. Not so much these days ( have struggled to break 100 for the last 3 years ) as that flaw is worse now than ever, even to the point of the banana slice I used to have when I first started playing returned with a vengeance. I came across this video about 1 1/2 weeks ago and for the first time ever I understood how the hips should work correctly. Watched the video 2 or 3 times, and when I played last week moved my hips as shown in the video. I wish I'd learn't this back in the 70's when I started playing. What a difference. Not a single spin out or step away. Weight transferred correctly, slice disappeared and my natural gentle fade returned. Best ball striking round I've had for 3 years. Combine this video with Mike's videos on use of the hands and my swing felt better than it ever felt. Just a shame my chipping & putting was so disgusting on the day. Will seek out Mike's videos on chipping and I'm sure there'll be a solution to the hitting fat & blading that occurred. With regards to my putting, just got lazy with my routine. Sorted that out on the 17th hole. So thanks Mike, watching your videos is helping heaps, and my mindset is slowly changing from one of dreading each round to one of looking forward to my next one and putting into practice what Mike teaches. One thing I would like to see is a video on getting out of green side bunkers with HEAVY sand. Packed & fine sand are not an issue, but the type of sand in bunkers here in Thailand is so heavy, even with the club face wide open I still can't get out of a bunker unless the ball is sitting cleanly on top of the sand and even then I have to try to pick it cleanly, otherwise the sand wedge just digs in.

The Golf Swing is Invisible, that is the most accurate statement I've heard about Golf!... The terms; fire the hips or rotating the hips has never resonated with me... I like the feel of pushing back from ground up on my lead hip, feels more natural than anything I've ever tried. I also like the fact that snapping the towel with this move is where I can pick up controlled speed. If I try to pick up speed with my hands, arms or shoulders it throws off my timing and swing sequencing... Since I am a car guy, I think of the hip push as when the Turbocharger kicks in at the correct RPM... Thanks for posting, and I wish there were more not very smart, smart people teaching Gold... I like to think of your lessons as "swing smarter not harder..."

I can attest that this straight line movement has had a great impact on my ball striking. As an over 68 yr old beach ball with feet, because of this one move, I'm getting my distance back. Also, this move has taken stress off my lower back. Having had sacrum & lumbar surgery in early November, I can execute this move without strain. Thanks. I'm a low single digit hncp that's been playing for over 50 years and this felt wrong at first until I realized it had virtually stopped the swaying that I've fought my entire adult life, which has resulted in a big improvement in ball striking. I had lost my "gas pedal". I was trying to turn my hips, and it was not working. After watching the video, I was able to use my left heel, and move forces up to my femoral head to move my left hip. Hit it well on the range today. Farther, and straighter ! Love the force transfer terminology too.

Like everyone else, I've never heard it explained this way and it makes so much more sense. I tried it on the range today and liked the results; I even used the same thought on backswing with my right hip. What he said about timing, I learned quickly, is key. My left hip wants to 'clear' too soon (this might cause fat shots, but not sure?), so I worked a lot on shorter swings b/c it's easier to time it.

Wayne D has always preached weight on your heels. I’ve always been with him but on a more instinctual agreement. This video is kind of showing me why Wayne is right and reaffirms my trust in concepts like this

I think it's ridiculous when people that claim to be (or are) golf instructors post comments or questions to Mike like they know better than he does. First of all, he won't answer such posts, and second, if you disagree with his swing ideas, then go away. He is (I'm sure) far, far more successful than the aforementioned. Most of these people are what is wrong with golf instruction, but they'll never realize it. Impossible for some to think something else could be correct, or better.

Wow. I have been following you on KZfaq for quite sometime now. This one is like the spark of enlightenment. Kind of reminding me of Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 . Thank you Mike.

I was struggling, today my balls were going straight left with a slight curve left as well, then I watched this video again, and I realized I was starting the left leg thrust too early. Then I went to the range and started the swing with my arms first then BANG my path started going right with a nice power draw!!! Woohoo Thank You!!

Very easy to understand, expertly explained piece of advice. This is hopefully the missing link in my golf swing. I've been struggling with cleating my left hip and preventing early extension. Hopefully this is the key to unlock the solution. Mr Malaska you are a brilliant teacher!

Dear Mike I can not wait to get on course to try out so many of your ideas in anger. I have been practising in the garden and I just know my game is going to improve. I thank you in advance Geoff

I know this is probably a minor point but seeing Mike do this looking at his back it made way more sense to me. I guess because that's closest to my viewpoint when I swing 👍

I've been watching lots of golf related video's in the last months. I hear lots of "pro's" talk about clearing the hips. I'm from Belgium. I understand English, but it's not my native language. From your video I just understood that it has nothing to do with language! Your approach to the "clearing hips"'. I think lots of pro's talk about clearing hips, but just don't explain what you should do. Thanks you guy's. Great lesson for me!

Mr Malaska, I’ve been watching your hip push videos and What an epiphany I just realized. You are only one on KZfaq actually describing this motion with precision and anatomical accuracy. I’m taking this golden information to heart and can’t wait to feel and see the difference. TY Jim W Orlando, Florida

I’ve been trying to straighten my lead leg, but lost consistence, this makes so much sense, can’t wait to take it to the range. I’ve been playing 50 years, but so much incorrect technique like you were taught as well, 50 years of your knowledges is priceless, thanks for all input enjoying my golf more than every 🤓
