welcome to Malaysia. Fried Cempedak (cem- pronounce like in chim-panzee) , you should just eat the flesh, so it is supposed to be sweet, though some likes to eat the stones too, which is nutty. The mangosteen is the queen of fruits, what you had was a bad one (the colour yellow, on the fruit). There is a certain way of breaking open the fruit and you should just eat the white flesh. It is very sweet. Try again! Hehe. Enjoy your stay (I hope the weather will calm down a bit while you're here!)

The bitter part of mangosteen is actually the sap, you can recognize it by the dark yellow color that looks like a stain. The better mangosteen has very little sap and the flesh is white, sweet and citrusy. If you find a sappy mangosteen, it's better to avoid the stained flesh. The tiny parts of the mangosteen flesh are usually seedless, but the bigger ones have seed and you should not eat the seed. When buying mangosteens, I always pick the ones with less sap outside, the better ones have dark purple skin and the skin should be slightly soft (not too hard).

Normally we don’t eat the seed of the chempedak ( although it can be eaten after softening it by boiling it). Just eat the flesh only

LOL...just eat the flesh of the deep fried chempedak. the pit usually not eaten. for the mangosteen, the the skin/husk is bitter. the is a method to open the skin properly. Also a good mangosteen flesh should be white or a little bit off-white. brown or mushy flesh is bad.

You shoudn't bite the mangosteen seed, that's why it taste bitter... rambutan, durian, cempedak and most of the fruit seeds aren't be eaten raw... just eat the flesh

OMG...no one eats cempedak goreng like that...together with the seed...may I suggest that u ask first how to eat whatever it is that you plan to eat in Malaysia and anywhere in the world for that matter...especially cendol & rojak...be sure to mix welll
