In this episode I follow up on our reading of Eliot with a poem by Yeats on the same theme and also one of mine!
Here's Yeats's poem:
The Magi
Now as at all times I can see in the mind's eye,
In their stiff, painted clothes, the pale unsatisfied ones
Appear and disappear in the blue depths of the sky
With all their ancient faces like rain-beaten stones,
And all their helms of silver hovering side by side,
And all their eyes still fixed, hoping to find once more,
Being by Calvary's turbulence unsatisfied,
The uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor.
and here's mine, from my book Sounding the Seasons:
Epiphany
It might have been just someone else’s story,
Some chosen people get a special king.
We leave them to their own peculiar glory,
We don’t belong, it doesn’t mean a thing.
But when these three arrive they bring us with them,
Gentiles like us, their wisdom might be ours;
A steady step that finds an inner rhythm,
A pilgrim’s eye that sees beyond the stars.
They did not know his name but still they sought him,
They came from otherwhere but still they found;
In temples they found those who sold and bought him,
But in the filthy stable, hallowed ground.
Their courage gives our questing hearts a voice
To seek, to find, to worship, to rejoice.
If you would like to encourage and support me in making these little films then you could always pop round and buy me a coffee which you can do via this page:

Thanks for this Malcolm - as ever, wonderful to sit at your feet and listen. I read your Epiphany sonnet at the beginning of our service last Sunday when we celebrated the Epiphany - transferred back, unfortunately.

Malcolm, thank you for this wonderful video on these 2 extraordinary poems. The different slant from the Magis’ perspective is thought provoking. I will be pondering for a few days on the insights you shared with us.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for sharing some of your own work. I, too, am going through the process of seeing Christian imagery with 'new eyes'. I've never thought of the magi as representative of the gentiles. Say hello to George for me.

"Silver Helms..." something, someone --- pure --- ready to fight, having already fought - but for whom and toward what? staring into the blue sky - surely there is the sense of expanding freedom like a sort of constant --- what a crowd of shouts to come through Yeats! always thankful for your singular voice midst the modern cacophony---

Thank you Malcolm for another wonderful reading and reflection. Thinking on the line, 'uncontrollable mystery' , I wonder if it can also mean that this mystery is not created by human influence - the story is not man-made! Another thought is that here we see the 'fullness of the Godhead' in bodily form - as a baby, who's movements and actions are separate and often uncontrollable by those around ... much more for me to muse on ... thanks again.

Oh my gersh Dr. Guite I love your videos and your work so very much and I have been so enjoying the 2nd book I received of yours for Christmas but having you block me on Twitter is throwing a wet blanket on my concentration in reading. I made a comment that clearly you must disagree with but I wanted to do what all us good Christians i suppose should do and say God bless you and keep up the good work and plz dont think those of us with different opinions don't have hearts full of love for ya

@@MalcolmGuitespell my handle is RegDudeContemplative haha thank you for your reply I appreciate it. Not looking to rebuke you. I most likely came across wrong in whatever I said. I just needed to try and say something to reaffirm my good will toward you because its hard for me to concentrate on reading your great writing if I feel I've offended. Probably a bit self indulgent on my part so im sorry about that but thank u again for replying it was very nice of you

Greetings Malcolm, I wonder if you ever have a conflict separating a personality from the art they produce. I must say that I sometimes wish that I didn't know certain rather distasteful things about an artist's personal life. I can't seem to dismiss the sense that it diminishes the joy that I felt before I learned those facts. I realize that it's not always fair to judge a person by today's standards, but there it is. Take care and All the Best. -Gary-

I try, where I can to distinguish the poetry from the poet and not to judge, but sometimes that's impossible. But Yeats himself made that distinction.
