I’m from Orkney and grew up in Stromness. I live away now, but hearing you reading this brought me right back to my childhood, everything is described so perfectly in his writing and your reading of it brought it to life.

So nice to see you again Malcolm. To think that you were only 25 minutes from my home when you visited Wheaton College and Tolkien's writing desk and the wardrobe that inspired C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" a very small world indeed. I've taken a newfound and keen interest in George Mackay Brown's writing since I discovered through DNA testing that I'm a Viking with deep roots in the Orkney's. Very exciting. Peace and serene piping. Gary

Happy to see another of your videos and even happier that you are talking about one of my favourite writers G,M,B. I could not agree more that George was a parochial writer engaging with universal themes. I also own the original paperback of An Orkney Tapestry which is a gem of a book. I recently read George Mackay Brown And The Scottish Catholic Imagination by Linden Bicket which was excellent so I can imagine how good the new edition of An Orkney Tapestry is. Looking forward to hearing you read more G. M. B, poetry Cheers.

Hi Malcolm, I’m so glad to have found you on here. I had a strange thing happen this morning, which may amuse. After watching this particular talk through yesterday, I went and bought the book. I also was reading the wiki page on Brown. It details the incident of his scarf going missing for a time. On its reappearance, he remarked of it - ‘the scarf that launched 1,000 quips’. 👌 On the train to work this morning a fellow cyclist went to disembark, as he was about to leave I noticed he’d left his scarf underneath his seat. Fortunately, I was able to return it to him. Felt a little like returning the venerable scarf to its venerable owner. Allow me to buy you a coffee, dear sir. Best, Aged P ✌️

I've had a copy of An Orkney Tapestry for several years, which I bought in a local charity shop here in Tuam, County Galway. It's my favourite book & I started reading it again yesterday while I was in a waiting room, its pocket size being perfect for such occasions. One part that stood out for me was the book's description of the Battle of Clontarf, "one of the key European battles", which wasn't quite how my school history lessons here in Ireland described it.

It seems that every time I see another video of yours, I'm adding to my book wishlist. Lol. I just pre-ordered another book that is still alive, a new edition being released this August here in the States of C.S. Lewis's "English Literature in the Sixteenth Century (Excluding Drama)." I think it may have been his "O Hell" volume, but I may be mistaken on that. Now, I'm going to have to look into this one too.
@dalenelson82542 жыл бұрын
That's the "OHEL" volume all right, and a book to love especially for its first chapter, which is mind-opening stuff of the first rank, and the material on Spenser and Shakespeare. I have two copies, one a paperback I've had for over 40 years for marking to within an inch of its life, and one, an Oxford clothbound book with dust jacket, to respect without marking, which I bought at a dealer's table at a Tolkien conference over 20 years ago (for $10). You might find you'll want to read the whole book, but those pages are not to be missed whatever you read or don't read.

Ahhh, malt and a pipe, heavenly sent! I enjoy nothing more than a pipeful of Peterson’s EMP or Standard mixture and a good measure of Lagavulin whilst reading. My favourite way in fact to further my philosophy and theology learning as you have to be relaxed into it. Currently reading Professor Peter Kreeft on Aquinas. You have to slow down and it goes hand in hand with few distractions and thoughtfulness. The pipe is one vice (if it can be called that) I will resist giving up. My gp doesn’t approve but has given up lecturing me now😂. Just discovered your channel and am a kindred spirit!
@MalcolmGuitespell5 ай бұрын
Welcome. GK Chesterton has also written an excellent book on Aquinas
@ReferenceFidelityComponents5 ай бұрын
@@MalcolmGuitespell Indeed! I have a copy. The Kreeft one is really an edited summation of Aquinas, the "Suma of the Suma", excerpts compiled with helpful footnotes and explanations. Chesterton remains one of my favourite authors. His "Orthodoxy" is a fabulous book! Confessions of St Augustin by FJ Sheed is also one I'd recommend. There'll never be enough time to read everything on my wish list so I try to be selective!

Like many i first read mackay brown just before visiting x walking on orkney x haveread much since then including the poetry x ,,playlets,,? Or whatever they are named. Altho i am irish i lived in sheffield for many years until botched eye surgery ( i was told i was being operated on by a consultant but was in fact treated by an unsupervised trainee who nearly blinded me) drove me back to the atlantic x my parents in Ireland-, since i had to give up all work i retuned to where my heart delighted .anyway my mackay brown s are all in sheffield x my poor vision means i will not be able to decipher my libraryshould i be well enough to return. Please can you direct me to some of your poetry pueces.and posdibly the drama ones as well. I ask for your patience with my bad typing now you know the reason. As before thank you for these much appreciated posts. Slainte indeed x ,,beannachtai agus grá,,. I also enjoy your c.s. Lewis pieces x only recently learned that narnia was inspiredby the Mournes.
