Of course, the sword's best attribute is that it will greatly boost that young man's morale in the coming battle because he *knows* it's a good sword. Aragorn told him so.

I always thought the scene was about raising the child’s morale for the upcoming battle… I never took the ACTUAL condition of the sword into consideration.

I always reckoned it was both. He's not just telling him it's a good sword. He steps back and SHOWS it's a good sword. In doing so, he's telling the young man 'This you can trust. This you can rely on.'

If that sword cuts, doesn't break, and can be swung for hours without warping... then it is a good sword.

Yeah aragorn migh have meant its well balanced, and all that. Its just in rusty, and chipped condition that doesnt make it bad sword just poorly maintained

It’s the best sword you’re gonna get, kid. It’ll work. It’s survived battles so far, and that means it’s more trustworthy than a new one. EDIT: Excellent. You hit every point I expected and then some. TIL to round off the corners of nicks.

The rounded corners of the sword in the movie really speak to the Armourers of the movie. From the things I've heard about the movie, I bet they actually made this one nice, then beat it up and left it outside for a while to get that old armory weathered look. Then right before filming, cleaned it up and fixed the damage like you would in this case

I admire your dedication in deliberately making a monstrosity for demonstration purposes... but now I'm imagining something like that angle-iron sword-like-object showing up in a 'post-apocalypse' film.

I always took io Aragorn stating that the handling characteristics of the sword were good; that it was nimble yet had enough presence to cut.

Interesting assessment with some good thought put into it. Perhaps the internet is being to harsh. It may not be an amazing sword, or even a high quality one, but still a good one. Another thing some people have said before is that Aragorn is simply trying to make the kid feel better. Give him a moral boost before battle. Such a thing can mean a difference in a persons survival. High moral means soldiers are better at fighting, or at the least not in a panic thus able to stand their ground better. But perhaps you are right. Aragorn would know a good sword. Being a Dunedain Ranger of almost 100 years old he would know better than perhaps many old veterans of Theodin's own court. Perhaps even more than a season warrior king like Theodin himself. One thing is for sure. The sword may be worn and look like crap, but if it can cut then it can kill an Urak Hai. That is what is important.

Even as a kid when I first saw the movie, I thought Aragorn was just trying to make the kid feel better even though he was about to die. However. That is some sort of broadsword. You can just bludgeon an Urukai to death with one.
@Ranstone
@Ranstone Жыл бұрын
It's an Oakeshotte type XVIII armingsword. With that crossection, it probably weighs just over 2 pounds. XVIII are known for their laser-like cutting ability with their shaving thin blade profile. You absolutely would not be bludgeoning anyone to death with this. Like all European swords, they were light as a feather, (Sub 4 pounds) and hair-popping sharp. (Despite myth of them being dull)

if the film was written by George RR Martin, there would've been a scene where Aragorn hears about the wasteful death of this one child soldier and spends the remaining runtime beating himself up about his accountability to lives that blindly sacrifice themselves in the name of his future reign.

Well done analysis. I concur. Even without analysis, but staying in the LOTR universe, I'd take the word of an 80 year old swordsman who has obviously been handling swords most of his life about if a sword is or isn't good over a KZfaq rando.

As long as the sword is decently sharp, which you demonstrated it is the sword will cut. As long as the sword has a good balance, the sword will be wieldy and I take Aragorn's word on that since he's been fighting orcs and evil for over 60 years. As long as the sword has a tight fit and nothing is loose, it won't fall apart and won't wobble in the hand which I again take Aragorn's word for. And as long as the handle is properly oval shaped, you will be able to properly determine edge alignment and have good slashed and strikes. And as long as the sword is straight, which it clearly is and Aragorn is seen checking straightness of the blade, it shows that it won't bend or break; especially how old and battle worn that sword is. That IS a good sword. Its not a great sword but against orcs with slapped together orcish armor then as Doug Marcaida would say... "it will kill."

From the prop design itself I feel that sword is going to lose the 1/3 front of it if it hacks into something a bit too hard. You can see it's hanging at a bit of a twist and were that real iron/steel, I wouldn't want to trust my life to that not suffering a stress fracture relatively soon.

@@MalcolmPL Hm, yeah I can see it now looking at it in more detail. Other thing I think is that they took a 9thish century sword design that looks vaguely Anglo-Danish and they drew out the blade to longsword/spatha length so it just instinctively feels dangerous.

A type XVIII. People who judge a sword by it's aesthetic condition have no clue what they're talking about. Looks very functional. My issue-battle rifle looked like absolute garbage, but I could hit a baseball at half a kilometer, and trust it with my life. Looks mean nothing, unless you're working armory. (Edit: I'm not referring to you, the uploader I was referring to critics of the scene.)

Aragorn meant l,in my opinion ,that it is a good sword in the sense that it is not perfect but good at least for defending oneself and clearly not for killing trolls or giant monsters, that's obvious. we also need to look at the context in which he said it. to give the boy security because it is a dramatic scene, to give him hope. When the orcs are climbing up the walls as that kid has to get ready to fight them off, he needs that sword and to have a believe that it's a good sword. Yes as a blade its seen better days an it may be no better then a sharp bar but a sharp bar swung in anger can be all one needs to live an see the next day.
