I loved the film. Yes, it's cheesy and implausible, but it's a supernatural horror, not a documentary. I feel like recent filmmakers have lost the art of having fun with gore and scares, and instead try to pitch films about demons, witches, and goblins as seriously as they can. I mean, making those films toned-down and serious doesn't make them any more believable, just more boring. This film was a hoot! Both suspenseful and emotional when needed. Never a dull moment with it, but made with a commitment.

I mean, I'm all for a horror movies that are fun, but the way you're wording it makes it seem like you're implying that horrors that take themselves seriously are inherently boring or something. If you're looking for the thrills from your horror movie, then sure. But imo horror movies that are truly terrifying almost always tend to take themselves extremely seriously cause the underlying themes *need* to be taken seriously for the horror to work (Hereditary, Relic, The Endless, Marrowbone are all relatively recent examples that come to mind)
@AlirioAguero2
@AlirioAguero2 2 жыл бұрын
@@darko1295 Perhaps poor wording from my part, as I do believe that most good films need some anchor in genuine emotion and seriousness. In fact, Malignant does have it with how it treats abuse, loneliness, and sisterly bond. Those things are treated with care. However, when it comes to how it treats its supernatural premise is kinda cheesy, in the right way. It doesn't compromise its premise in order to "be more realistic", like some supernatural horrors do. You know... starting with 45 mins of basically nothing to tease a premise. In Malignant, there is always something meaningful on screen. Scene 1 - Doctors being attacked by Gabriel, Scene 2 - Emily being attacked by her husband, Scene 3 - Husband being killed, and so on. Some horrors compromise a premise that is bonkers to begin with in order to feel "more real". There are other great modern horrors, but they either don't feature anything supernatural (e. i. Midsommar, Martyrs, Oldboy...), or give into exploring their bonkers premise to the fullest, not afraid of being seen as implausible (e. i. Hereditary, Krampus, Witch, ect.) In fact, I do find Hereditary to be an even better film for how deep it goes into exploring its dark theme. But, it's an exception rather than a rule. Hope I explained it better.

@@AlirioAguero2 I definitely agree with what your saying! It’s nice to see a movie that has a different layout and story from the last few years. Not saying the last fee years didn’t have great movies. There just different more of a slow burn something you have to look more into. Like a psychological thriller. This movie almost reminded me of horror from the 80s and 90s. That unrealistic almost funny at times but still got me scared a few times. It was a fun story and not a super serious one that I felt weird or sad after. And sometimes when I watch horror I want it to be fun and exciting not something that makes me sad or terrified for the next day or so. It was a nice breathe of fresh air.

I watched Amanda the Jedi's review on this, and she figured out most of it early on, too. She did admit to knowing that there was a bonkers twist in the story, so she paid attention to all of the stuff in the background (I think it was the opening credits) that essentially "spoiled" the backstory. It sounds very similar to my experience watching Serenity (the awful Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway movie) where I knew there was a batshit twist, so I was mentally prepared to analyze everything and figured it out before the reveal.

Have you seen the new movie Lamb? When I went to go see Candyman, there was a preview for it. I haven't seen it, but it looked very weird and seemed to revolve around a couple living on a remote farm where they raise sheep and thru some means one of the sheep gives birth to a human/lamb hybrid baby. It looks like they start rasing the lamb as their own child. It would be cool to see you review it!

@@toastshine I expected more. It wasn't totally bad, just kind of boring and the ending left something to be desired. I think the original was more interesting. But you know Hollywood, maybe they were jut trying to leave things in a way that they could possibly make a sequel in the future 🙃

The conjuring to me at least in the very beginning was very good especially with the fact that it's based off of a true story. One thing that I did find disappointing though after watching videos and listening to the actual family they cut out some of the most terrifying parts and I think that they should have left them in. Life for instance one of the characters woke up with all of the ghost standing around her bed chanting at her.
@cyagami90

The story is debated as being real bc the Warrens have lost all credibility. They made several false claims without sufficient evidence and even groomed a teenager. They also apparantly ruined the lives of the family the most recent film was based on. Many people who worked with them debunked their claims. Especially bc they claimed to have seen a real vampire who lived in a real coffin. Like even my 5 year old aint buyin it.

3 cheers for a horror film that doesn't villainize real mental illness and instead makes up a premise ( a beautiful, wild ass, not ableist premise) As someone with a personality disorder who sees people take real shit people go through and make them "evil" and other bs, this was as refreshing as it was unexpected. 10/10

i love how the filmmakers just had fun and let it go batshit crazy. and it’s also cool that they kinda made fun at/with the audience in some parts. like, with the phone call in the bathroom! the way it was framed, if you’re used to old horror tropes when the character is facing away from their reflection, you’d expect that ‘oh shit their reflection will suddenly move on its own and reveal the ghost or whatever’ and in this movie, that didn’t happen- yet somehow that is exactly what happened, we just didn’t know yet.
