I’ve never seen the directors cut. It now makes sense why Laforge is standing next to Trish while she’s singing books at the end.

A lot of the director's cut makes way more continuity sense but I feel like it's a weak and leftover cut for a reason. The real problem is Mallrats, as much as it's an old school cult classic, has way too many writing and narrative problems as a real movie, and I say that out of pure love for it.

My favorite part about Kevin Smith films is the way they act as a cohesive universe. If you listen to the dialogue, they make references to events that took place in the other films. Some actors return to play the same parts, sometimes the actors return but they play new parts. That, and Smith's films all have a lot of heart. You can tell John Hughes had an influence on Kev.

Very unfortunate that some people can't seem to find the theatrical version, but instead this extended version is all they can find. It is a purposefully bad version of the film was really only meant for fans that wanted to see how bad the original rough cut was before the re-shoots and re-edits. The story goes, Kevin Smith wanted to do a directors cut of the movie for an anniversary DVD as this is the only one of his films he didn't edit himself, got all the original footage at great expense only to realize while editing that his version isn't at all different from the theatrical one, there's not much he would edit different. So still needing something for the anniversary DVD he decided to go back and re-edit a version similar to the bad one before all the re-shoots and re-edits. He even just randomly through in all the bad takes, and alternate lines in there just for the hell of it for fans to see. He even states on the DVD for people not to watch this version unless you're a fan who has already seen the original. It's really just a bad alternate version for fans. So how the hell people seem to be finding this purposefully bad version and not able to find the original version is a bit of a mystery but god damn this is one wacky gameshow.

It's kinda jarring to see the extended version for only the second time. In the DVD commentary Kevin Smith said that whole opening segment the night before was cut because in test audiences there was just 20 minutes of silence from the crowd. One of the few movies I like the theatrical cut better, like Army of Darkness. It just more polished.

@@ANiceMarmot It's not really the director's cut, Kevin Smith went back and edited it basically back to the original rough cut, just to show people how bad the original version was before they did some re-shoots. Sounds like Chasing Amy needs to be added to the watch list since J didn't recognize Joey Lauren Adams. Another addition for Jason Lee would be Almost Famous. A little sad one of my favorite interactions never makes these edits. Renee - "Wow a sailboat", William - "Brenda", Renee - "Dick". It makes me a little sad people don't get that joke anymore because Beverly Hills, 90210 is forgotten now.

[Edited] There's a Superman comic book that shows a pregnant Lois Lane dying because their baby kicked her. The baby also died because it was midterm. Superman leaves Earth afterwards and finds a planet similar to Krypton lead by a kinda bitchy queen. But he encourages her to be kind and she falls in love with him, offers to make him king, etc. He tells her what happened and why he's not ready and he leaves the planet. It's really good. And then there's the one with the Joker involved in Lois and their baby's death, which is the introduction to the Dark Universe of alternative universe Justice League. Also a really interesting story

If you pay attention, or just watch these movies you catch all the characters that played in other Kevin smith movies. The girl who keeps getting intruded on while changing clothes is the main character in “chasing Amy”, the 3rd suitor is the main character from clerks, the big guy who couldn’t see the picture is one of the characters who buys weed from jay and silent bob, the orangutan is from jay and silent bob strike back. The girl who has the aneurysm and dies , is the same one whose funeral that the clerks shut down the store to go to the funeral. The sega guy in this movie is part of 2 or 3 movies where he sales the rights to blunt man comic books. Chris rock plays a director in jay and silent bob strikes back, and the black apostle Rufus in dogma. Ben Affleck has been in pretty much everything. It’s sorta like the Kevin smith universe.
