Whether you love it or hate it, living in Malta totally depends on your situation and your reasons for moving here.

I am Maltese and I am overall satisfied with my life in Malta. I have a salary in the range of 3-4k (net), but to he honest i dont know how i would be able to live if I earned a third of what I do, which is what the majority of the workforce on the island earns. I currently live in the 3 cities and soon moving to an even quiter location in the west of Malta, and I'd rather chew my arm off than live in Sliema, Mosta, Msida, Gzira or any of the construction-ridden places. The traffic is what it is. To be honest, I think traffic in Malta is exaggerated most of the time. I've driven in urban areas even in supposed expat nirvanas like Portugal, and once you hit the urban areas, you find traffic most of the time. My opinion - if traffic is your biggest problem, then you really don't have many problems! Nonetheless, it seems that the government at the moment seems to be asleep and not be willing to address the many disgruntlements, locals and expats alike, have.

People are saying it's tough living in Malta trust me it's harder in London. I left London to live in Malta I work full time with half the hours that I was doing in London and I'm only earning 300 less than what I was getting in my job back in London. I now get to enjoy more time to do the things that I love and the weather is always fantastic, the only issue I have come so far which is annoying is parking apart from that not much to moan about

I’m sorry for the Maltese people. I know what Malta used to be like back when it was Maltese. I don’t think there was even a mall when I lived there, only small family-owned businesses. It was charming and delightful. Now…. now it’s overrun with people, cars, cranes, hotels, etc. “Progress” is not always good.

I’ve only been to Malta 4 times, planning my 5th visit later this year, but I’ve noticed over those visits, before and after the pandemic the changes. I think anyone who moves to Malta MUST uphold the Maltese traditions. Learn the languages, both English and Maltese. Respect the Maltese people and their country, don’t try to turn it into the country you left. Stop complaining! If you don’t like it, then leave. Malta is a rare gem of a place, it’s so unique and so beautiful. The Maltese people are amongst the friendliest I’ve ever met. The food is amazing. The architecture is outstanding. The way of life is laid back and relaxed and as an Aussie I appreciate that. Yes, the govt still has improvements to make, but that’ll happen, in time. I’d love to live in Malta, but it’s not possible right now, so I just keep visiting….but if I ever do move some day, from day one I’ll count myself as Maltese and throw myself into the community. I won’t expect the community to change a single thing for me! God bless Malta! ❤

Good to know. Malta is overpopulated - because of foreigners coming to Malta to work, salaries have remained miserable and rent for residence has become expensive. Therefore I hope ex-pats will avoid coming to Malta to work, maybe we Maltese will benefit from an increase in our salaries and the rent for the residence will become reasonable.

Malta cannot take it anymore. Now we have a failed infrastructure system - water and power cuts, soapy sea which sometimes stinks of drainage, roads jammed with too many cars, over development and the list goes on. I want the Malta I once had back. Malta is for the Maltese. The rest can come to visit and leave. That is how it was and that is how it should be. We are too small to have you all.

I am Maltese and happy of living here. All this criticism and we have foreigners that come to live here from all of the world, because this country is the place of opportunities.I know foreigners that have good jobs here that tnow they are not renting, but paying the loan on the property they bought. Can you tell me why they choose to buy their home here and not buying in Sicicly from were they come from? Foreigners the same like us have the same health services for free. Free transport, fuel and electricity bills subsidised among the cheapest in EU countries. And can you name a country that is not having power cuts with this heatwave? I am not saying that Malta is heaven on earth but many other good things are not mentioned.

I don't blame them and you come to your senses when you experience living abroad. I am Maltese living in Austria and the statistics about the survey are 100% right. It's a pity because Malta is beautiful as a country but living is far worse than when you visit the island for a short time. From my experience, I can say so.

Over crowded is the main problem of Malta. The government must control the immigration from non EU people in order to get into track. This is my personal opinion.

Moved to Malta from Canada, and I'm honestly suprised to learn Malta ranks so low. Current heat-wave aside, my quality of life in Mellieha is higher than back home.

If you want to live in a country with UK prices , wages of Thailand , traffic and chaos on the roads, noise polution , construction works , overcrowdedness and dirtiness of India , non existence of free public areas ( parks , sport facilities , etc. ) ...Malta should be your top destination to move in . More like a slavery Isalnd right now . Considering how many people from 3d world countries moved in , and in what harsh conditions they are working for pennies . But you can always say that such opinion is just from someone who is a pessimist and should go somewhere else .

I spend half the year in Malta & the other half in the UK & I'm happier when in Malta hands down...one of the BIG things for me is that over there everything doesn't shut down come 4 o'clock even in the winter so I can have a stroll to the shops or go & have a coffee & the streets are not dead & I can bump into people for a little chat! My father's Maltese & one of his friends decided not to go back to his home land of Malta for his retirement & stay put in London where his body wasn't found for 2 weeks!! So we are at the moment here in the UK.. where believe me they have a LOT of problems too!! & traffic!!

Malta offers great food, warm people, sunny weather, stunning views , lots of festivals and fireworks at 8am. And same time Malta is not ready to step into digital world talking about banking system, paperless and queueless services and cashless payments. Nothing to say more.🤷‍♂

The government is to blame they make the laws . And should if something is not working should change it. Lets see what Malta is like at the next election.

Once foreigners move to island or small cities, the quality of life will degrade for locals, inflation, cost of living and so forth will rise and become tourists trap and the local will have to pay the price of it. I think every city or town or Island gotto know their limitation.

I was living in Tokyo (Japan), To be honest I had no option but to comeback to Malta. Honestly I miss Japan. Malta is way way backwards. The island is small, small mindedness and low opportunity for growth. Japan Tokyo was great. Im studying and I hope to leave Malta in a few months time. (I am Maltese) Not everyone can afford to buy a flat, what If I want a house not a flat? What about mountains, and cosmopolitan life?

The worst country to live is Australia You pay a fee yearly if you own a property, you pay for garbage collection, university, buses , tolls to use the road, childcare and more. The Maltese don't know how good they have got it.

I can only say, been in Malta for summer holiday last year with my partner and i can only say- yes positive things as we enjoyed and myself.Yes as tourist you can't see much but I met you Alex and we talked about life in Malta,etc..People SHOULD understand that everywhere is different and in the world we are living, life is more expensive then it was +15yrs back..Those who are saying that us-foreigners people "taking" take jobs,etc..should just stay in their house and keep living on social (gov.support) money.I personally think, with no any foreign person/people economy and jobs wouldn't grow so much faster then without them. As example i can use Ireland🇮🇪. Live in Ireland for over 8 years( I'm from Croatia🇭🇷) and economy is so high since foreign people*include myself start coming, and more jobs opportunitys are here for ALL PEOPLE. Life in Ireland is very expensive but at same time people with good earning still struggle and made their way of positivity.. Alex your Malta videos are insightful. As an expatriate and former business owner in Malta until a year or so following entry into the European Union, our problem became difficult with the EU regs. My observation at the time was that Malta had overnight become overwhelmed by refugees who were already becoming a drain on a tiny Maltese infrastructure, culture, and society. It was time to leave a beautiful island and lovely people, already overwhelmed by the influx. God only knows what it is like in 2023!😪

The best place to live will be always our mother country. Any country has specifics issues and circumstances that will make you fall in love or hate! It's a personal perspective. For each one could be different. So, we need to get use with the place where we are living currently and become it in our heaven.... With no good expectations the result should be build ourselves. So, you will be responsible for your happiness!

The government of Malta must pass and set the rules for minimum wages if they are inviting foreigners to work there. This way the foreigners workers may not suffer.

I am a Key Employee Initiative, with a salary of around 3k3(Net) per month, and from non-EU countries. I just think it is not enough if my wife and my daughter come here when my reunification is approved. The house/ apartment is so expensive with my salary, how can I save and buy the house with the price of 300k.

We spent a full month on Gozo in January… we rented a car, but we stopped driving after 3 days, and returned the car. We used Uber and Bolt to go everywhere for the rest of the time there. The road infrastructure was not good at all, plus driving in the left side of the road meant driving is best left to locals to navigate. Congestion in the cities, and two way driving in single lane roads on small towns (plus random parked cars) was not good. Not safe to bike anywhere, in my opinion.

To many whingers through Malta has it's problems like inflation and infrastructure no denying that , but there's a reason why people come to Malta for work otherwise they wouldn't come it must be better then there previous employment. Alex public transport is very reliable peake season in any nation in Europe will be busy. As for being safe and crime in Malta I don't believe those figures Malta is very safe compared to other nations and still very peaceful. Obviously there's room for improvement.

Very True. You need to have at least 2k net salary for survival. To get an accommodation, grocery , other expense like bills , transport if u take a cab, private doctor fee, medicines and many more. If you are earning less than 2k need to make friends so that you can share the apartment.

I moved here a year and a half ago and rent upper level places and I can say that Malta is a horrible place to live. It’s corrupt, noisy, dirty, unfriendly, horrible traffic, horrible driving and really bad food. Can’t wait to leave for a more civilised country.

I am always of the belief that whoever does these types of surveys be it one person or a survey company if they actually visit the places or if there is a hidden agenda, or do they go on the hearsay of some disgruntled individual or group. There is no perfect country now in the world. Population increase due to migration, climate change & attitudes play a huge part in changes in a country. No one can say because of migration that a country has changed for the worse. With more people migrating, business increases & a lot of industries make money & a few don’t. It’s just human nature that locals blame foreigners or outsiders & Malta is no different than any other country & tolerance & attitudes must change & people must be open to ideas rather than having tunnel vision. Because I have Malta on my top destination list, I subscribed to a newsletter weblink in Malta for updates on daily happenings over there. I noticed that a recent issue in Malta is power cut out that has been occuring for some time now and I am a bit confused. You see one major reason why I want to leave my country is because of erratic power supply and days of black-outs in major cities with low wifi speed but we have generators, solar panels and inverters as alternatives although fuel price is ridiculously high now Please Alex, what is the state of electricity cut outs in Malta? Is the whole island highly affected? If yes, how are you coping? I read from other channels that due to the cut-outs, pipe-borne water supply is affected, food storage in refrigerators, waste is littered in high piles along certain streets, rodent invasion etc. Is your province or residential area without electricity for a while now? If yes, what are the energy options you people have transitioned to until the problem is resolved? Knowing how hard is it to raise money in my country to travel for a better life elsewhere. The exchange rate and other factors, do you still recommend that we come to study or finally relocate to Malta or are there residences there that enjoy uninterrupted government-generated electricity come rain come shine And what is the average accomodation rent in those areas. I lived in Malta 2008-2009 and then went back in 2017, I saw and experienced a different Malta. I had a good job at Betsson, but went back to Sweden after 6 months, so I totally understand there opinions... However, Malta will always have a big place in my heart... I was a tourist in Malta and I was in awe how beautiful it was everywhere you looked. Yes, the island looks overbuilt and overcrowded, but there is a reason: people want to live there. It seems safe and friendly. Like anywhere, if you aren't reasonably wealthy, lets say living on 2,500 Euros a month or more, it won't be as enjoyable to live there.

Hi Alex, Deepika here. Wonderful video again. I have come back to India for a month as my son couldn't take the high temperatures. Regarding the feelings the localites have for foreigners; I think not just Malta but entire Europe is pretty much run by immigrants now. Europe needs them more than they need them. They need people to pay taxes in order to give away free goodies to the older people like pension, healthcare and subsidised housing. I am sure in many countries there is no free pension given by the government. For example India, we work out asses off to spend for the present and to save for the future as we don't get government pension unless you are a government employee. I think in Europe, it has now reached a point of egg first or chicken first wherein one can't tell whether foreigners are coming because there are more jobs or because there aren't any localites willing to do few jobs, so foreigners are coming. This is something that the Maltese government has to answer. Anyways, kudos to you for always finding relevant topics to cover through your channel ❤

Well, I was supposed to be in Malta now if my visa application have not been rejected after going through all the process. It almost took 21 months of my life from the day I gave my interview and got hired but later I realised that all the Malta High Commission wanted was MONEY. I lost altogether €1400and more importantly my precious 2years of my life waiting... Since the refusal, I have been seeing similar downfall news from Europe especially Malta. Now I think it was better that I got rejected...

I lived in Malta for almost 5 years between 2011-2014. I had a 3 bedroom apartment with two bathrooms a few yards away from Bugibba square for 350 EUR plus utilities. I can't believe the prices in Malta these days. My last visit was back in March. Me and my friends went to a few restaurants and I spoke to the staff in Maltese but they all spoke English.:-) My Maltese friends said that they feel uncomfortable to speak Maltese as they know that most of the staff do not speak Maltese. I couldn't believe the number of Indian workers on the Island. I was wondering how can someone from India get a visa for a job that can be done by locals or other people from the EU. You do not need a special skill to be a waiter. I thought you needed a special skill in order to get a visa. This is not an attack on Indians in Malta. I simply state the facts. I think the problem is also GREED. How can the local Maltese landlords rent out an apartment and have up to 10-15 people in it? That should not be allowed and it should be banned by local authorities and the government. That would change a lot on the island. Malta is an EU country and not some third world country where people are packed like sardines in the flat. I live in Prague and by Czech law, you have to have at least one person speaking Czech in any establishment, be it a shop, restaurant etc. No wonder the resentment towards foreigners is rising in Malta. From what I have heard, many locals feel nowadays like foreigners in their own country. I think it is quite sad. My beloved Malta is changing and I don't think it is for the better.

If the own malteses are complaining a lot about Malta, image the foreigners. Malta is a cat-fish country and making the modernity slavery alive. The malteses leave Malta in first opportunity they have because they know how bad the country is.

I came here 6 months ago, I honestly did not expect so much xenophobia, racism and divide between locals and foreigners. I understand why maltese people are angry, it's a shame that this beautiful island is so urbanized and there is ongoing construction everywhere, but that's governments responsibility and they obviously do not care about their own people, just about the profit, which is so sad. Also, as a foreigner living on Malta I am trying to focus on positive things, I am learning about maltese history, about lifestyle here, trying to learn the language, just out of respect for the locals. I think that people should come together and try to find middle ground, to learn how to live together, help each other and that's the only way to make some progress (financially, personally, ...) It's natural that people migrate from one county to another, that has been happening for milenia, no one can stop that, people just want better life for themselves and their families.
