Mamlambo Fossils

Mamlambo Fossils

7 ай бұрын

I headed out to one of my favourite fossil hunting spots as a storm rolled in, I was debating whether I actually get out of the car but in the end I decided to try and find at least one fossil... and boy did I!
This is a very rare find indeed and I have no idea how much of the skull is going to be in the concretion, there could be quite a bit given the size of the concretion.
3D model of the toothed bird I printed: sketchfab.com/3d-models/pelag...

WOW Morne! You are making such an incredible impact on the knowledge of New Zealand prehistory with your finds - the penguins, the shark, the marlin, the whales, and now this!! I couldn't be happier for you. I bet Canterbury Museum loves you, filling out their fossil collection for them. Please do be careful with lifting though, wishing you a speedy recovery with your back injury.

Lol they are very selective with what they take but they might be interested in this one!! The lifting was fine, it was the carrying at that weird position

I’ve seen pelagornis in games before, but I’ve never seen their anatomy close up. I never realized the “teeth” those prehistoric birds had were actually formed from the same thing as the beak. Very cool! Thanks for another really awesome video sharing another spectacular find!

Great fossil, great prep! But my dude, you have to get yourself a mountain rucksack, the ones with a metal frame so you can carry these stones up where your back won't be hurt. We ain't getting any younger, no good if you break your back! Hope it healed by now.

If you visit the Taranikki Museum ,they have a full life sized model of one of these amazing Birds hanging down from the roof ,they also have a fragment of part of the beak which someone found .It's very impressive that these birds were here and so recently ,I really wonder why they went extinct .Seems the coming of the ice age cycles 2.6 millions ago they just couldn't adapt .
@MamlamboFossils

I've seen photos of it! They are truly amazing!! I wonder as well, maybe they were outcompeted by modern gulls?

Every system tends to either peak or go leaner and leaner, so it's likely that the bird couldn't keep up. There's examples of survivors (crocks, sharks) but they're more like examples that prove the rule. The rest peaced out.

We will never know about there breeding rates or requirement's ,and the world got cold ,big changes to the sea currents and nutrient's cycles must have happened .I just read a new paper on the Pliocene plants From Auckland sites and the massive changers in terrestrial plant life on land that happened when compared todays native plants .I myself do plant fossil collecting from Miocene Northland and some Pliocene Auckland ,and most macro fossil plant seed/fruits remands can be seen in both Time periods ,a few extinctions ie the NZ coconut missing from the Pliocene Record ,but most of the other plants appear in both time periods until the ice ages began ,then dramatic change on land and sea life as well .So Many of the Plant seeds/fruits are bigger than today Karaka Seeds which are the biggest today ,that I wonder did Moa have a diet like the Cassowary or was there other things unknown living here but no fossils have being found to date to show they never existed .A set of giant Moa foot prints found four years ago ,only just got confirmed to be Pliocene age .I hope one day you may discover a land bird that got washed out to sea and sunk to the sea floor and fossilized .

Congrats Morne! You really did find a toothed bird! And there is quite a bit of the beak in that rock still! That's awesome! And heck yeah, start working on a dino or a mosesaur card and make sure you make it complete! I think a CT scan one you get the beak exposed completely is you best chance of removing all the bones without damaging them. Yay! This is incredible! Congrats!!!🎉

Fabulous find! About 35 years ago, I found a bony tooth bird bill from the London Clay (54 million years old approx), Isle of Sheppey, Kent. As your prepping stands mine looks exactly like yours but I only had "a small section" and I think you have a lot more. My specimen is in the British Natural History Museum along with the fragment of Hyracotherium jaw and a large Dasornis vertebra (named by us at the time - tongue in cheek - as "Dodosaurus") found from the same locality. London Clay avians and mammals are disarticulated and fragmentary. You're doing tremendous work. Congratulations. p.s. I've a couple of Cretaceous crabs from the Gault Clay, Folkestone. I send them to you so you can compare those NZ giant crustaceans with the UK mini ones. Happy Christmas!

Now that is a seriously cool fossil, it would be so beautiful to have at least a partial skull preserved inside the rock! I had no idea that that Bird was so large, with a toothed rostrum it would make short work of anything it decided to eat. I wonder if it was as undiscerning about its meals as modern-day pelicans! I hope not for Early mankind's sake! One thing is for certain a bird that big would provide a great Thanksgiving roast now, wouldn't it? LOL Can't wait for further updates on this one!!

@MamlamboFossils it might take my hand as well! No thanks.... I think it deserves a scan. Otherwise, there's many weeks of chipping delicately away. 47kg is a lot of stone. Amazing find. Can't wait to see what else is in there.
