Ever wondered if you could convert a standard Mamod Traction Engine into a Portable Engine? Well it turns out that after some drilling, cutting, filing, bending, riveting and painting, it's not that hard after all! I hope you enjoy my attempt

Well done! BTW For the long flat belt to work, the pulleys need crowns which is a slightly rounded profile. Easier belting is simply waxed floss tied with a tight knot and trimmed. Be sure to wedge the engine with the wedges in front of the wheels to keep the belt tight.

I've done a few of them and had a custom made center boiler flue down the middle of the boiler that has a curved elbow that's linked to the fire box for better draft for the fire it was a bit of a pain to do but it can be done with the wilesco traction engines as well to modify the boiler it's self to have a fire tube flue in the boiler it actually works quite nicely and it steams the boiler a little bit faster and more efficiently but of course I added a water feed pump to the boiler too

Very nice. Just wondering - could you have used a MM2 framework to go on the boiler?

Hi, Yes you could use an MM2 frame to support the engine. I didn't have one to hand so had to make up my own. Thanks for watching

Run your belt in a figure "8" so it will self tension without an idler.

Wilesco machines are much better made than mamod, mamod is nothing too simple!

I own both. My Mamod Steam Roller is from the 1960's and runs extremely smooth. Much smoother than you would think a single action could with that cylinder moving so much. It is so simple it does not even have the "Direction" lever. No lever at all in fact, just runs wide open. My Wilesco is a D40 from the 1980's. They are now called a D405, no difference. Mine has always had a slight rattle in the crankshaft but only in forward. Reverse is smooth as butter. I have made a full length roof & working steering gear for my Mamod so it certainly looks more realistic. I find a certain elegance in its simplicity. It certainly runs MUCH quieter than my Wilesco. As for quality of construction they are about equal. Mamod has a stronger cast chimney and the Mamod Tractor has MUCH nicer cast rear wheels. Wilesco are stamped and not very detailed. So much so that I like many people have replaced our Wilesco tractor rear wheels with Mamod ones. They look much more realistic. The Wilesco has a double gear reduction which the Mamod could use, it is pretty quick for a "Steam Roller". Get one of each and have twice the fun! God Bless.
