This video I unbox a brand new Mamod Ol' Stumpy Traction Engine which is new to the 2024 Mamod Range. I'm not sure if these are limited edition but when purchasing mine there was only 37 left in stock.
I am not basing my opinion on a secondhand Mamod as the price of this one would buy you several of them which would give you much more enjoyment and better value for money.
Overall in my opinion this model is good value for money being £285 compared to the standard current (2024) price of £273.60. You get a Stunning Mamod Traction Engine with some features which are brand new and might only be limited to this specific model.
My model is set to be a shelf queen next to my other Limited edition Roller, Steam Wagon and Traction Engine from previous years. I like what Mamod have done with these unique yearly edition models and can see why they have turned to making more and more of them in recent years to appeal to the collectors market. Back in the 1960's this was a common toy and no video games were about, times have shifted and the young generation today are not really interested in the toys of the past this has forced Mamod into being a old past time. The glory days of Mamod might be over where most kids would want to have a Mamod but they have kept strong over the years and are onto a winner with these special edition models.
From my previous purchases from Mamod 2 of 3 limited edition models have had defects being bent front axles since then the company has changed hands and I think new life has been given to the company and wish Mamod with its new owners all the best. My parcel was very well packaged and quality control has definitely been improved since previous years before being packaged up and shipped.
Overall I was very impressed with what Mamod designed and executed with the 2024 Ol' Stumpy the Stunning maroon colour with the brass bands really sets it apart from the rest so much it will look great next to a Mamod Showmans Engine. The standard canopy has been reworked to fit a small boiler which is a great feature as its something different and probably keeps costs down as well due to using standard parts. The use of the new lever whistle again is another good feature as it just adds that little bit extra brass that makes it pop. The rubber tyres are a nice finish to such a unique model.
I do hope Mamod continues to grow under its new ownership and keeps on producing yearly special edition models. Some suggestions for next year is a Crane Traction Engine, Road Locomotive, Portable Engine, Showman Engine. My personal favorite would be a Crane Traction Engine so wilesco has a rival in the model steam toy world and we can support a traditional brand like Mamod.
