I agree with that sentiment at the end. Is Man of Steel a perfect movie? No. Is it my favorite Superman movie? Not at all. But for what it is, there’s some great ideas and I do really enjoy this movie. It’s not my ideal version of Superman but it has interesting things about it

Last night I had a dream that Mr Sunday movies died and the entire world was sad. When I woke up, I quickly checked to see if a video was uploaded by him and this video starts with him choking....

I don’t care what anyone else thinks, Man of Steel was a masterpiece of the genre and in my opinion the most underrated comic book film of all time! Love this movie.

i personally think it’s similar to the amazing spider-man on completely missing the point of the character and i felt the 3rd act (which is about an hour of just punching) sucked but i’m glad you enjoyed it. i agree with Red Letter Media if you want to see why people hate it

The one small aspect I appreciated from this was having the military involved, just for the sake of not having Clark be a big blue babysitter like the nonsense in Avengers about the National Guard being an hour away. Just makes it seem kind of silly, but here dissolves that OP aspect a bit.

In The Avengers, an alien armada arrived through a portal above NYC with no warning whatsoever. How much time think the national guard needs to deploy? 5 minutes? 10?

Some people interpret it that way in the theatrical cut of Superman II, but I never did. Zod, Non and Ursa are seen being marched away by the "Arctic Patrol" in the extended cut of the movie. Killing Zod just after he's been rendered essentially powerless wouldn't be a very heroic thing to do, especially for an "overgrown boy scout" character such as Reeve's version of Superman. Besides, believing Superman kills Zod also means believing that Lois kills Ursa and that doesn't really jibe with the tone and ethos of the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies. But then my favorite superhero stories are more about rescue fantasies and less about revenge fantasies. For example, for me the helicopter scene in Superman The Movie is more exciting than the entirety of Man of Steel. YMMV.

it's played as a dramatic moment as "he just took a life" but the literal previous scene was him and Zod tearing up the city. It's narrative whiplash.

Killing him isn't the problem. It's the how, why, and when. By that point, Superman has destroyed the kryptonian race, caused thousands of humans to be hurt and/or killed, all while beaten Zod's face on like there is no tomorrow. And Clark then feels bad about killing Zod as if his broken his greatest moral code. Like, What?!

The problem with it for me is that it's set up as a big dramatic moment despite it never being set up that this Superman has a problem with killing.

20:00 this...absolutely true...never liked superman before i watched this movie precisely cuz superman is so overpowered n its just boring to watch...this movie showed the gravity of his power n made it cool looking especially with the villains...always felt it got all that hate for nothing...

Same, it seems alot of fans, especailly ones who may feel entitled or have set expectations, look at superhero comic films like DC. In a glass half empty kinda way.

It's a young, unseasoned Superman fighting a Kryptonian of equal power who's the most successful warlord on his own planet. The idea that an inexperienced Superman can just make Zod fight somewhere else is lazy. Zod even tells Clark his weakness is these humans. So if he flys away, Zod will just destroy metropolis. The killing of Zod is Clark making a choice between Krypton and Earth, and he chooses Earth. This is not hard to grasp.

But he isnt really choosing between krypton and earth when he killed zod, he was making that choice when he destroyed zods ship. That is were he had to decide that saving earth was more important than the possibility of bringing back his home. By the time he killed zod, that option was already gone and being that their both men, there is 0 possibility of 'natural' repopulation.

Jonathan does set Clark on the right path. This world the characters live in is complicated and therefore his fathers feelings on what Clark should do is complicated. He's not telling Clark to let the kids in the bus die, he's conflicted between his concern for his sons well being and the well being of the world. This Superman is NOT dark and gritty. Hope is a major theme through this movie and he doesn't lose it or portray anything otherwise in this. BvS is the story about Superman losing and regaining his hope.

It would be cool if the kryptonian was there originally due to the mother box and Zod was dead but Superman somehow knew he could possibly revive Zod using the genesis chamber.

I totally get the killing of Zod, but I feel like these people would never have been satisfied in how Clark does it. Like if he had punched his heart, slammed him into the ground or stabbed him with that spear, it wouldn’t have appeased them in the least for their little purity of his innocence bullshit.

Jonathan's death was just to show how much he was willing to do to shield clark. That's it. It's just a character scene. And he was right. Showing himself to the world got him killed two years later. His dad just didn't want him to go through that much pain. Clark couldn't save him because he hesitated. Because that's how he was brought up for years. Last time he saved anyone was when he saved the drowning bus.

Going back to it, I actually quite enjoyed Man of Steel, and is quite possibly my third favourite Superman movie behind the first two Christopher Reeve films. Even though this movie is by no means perfect (it's like a 6 or 7 out of 10 for me), there's a lot of stuff to like and I wish Snyder was given the opportunity to do his own Superman trilogy. Shame WB made him scrap that and instructed him to make Batman v Superman in order to set up Justice League. Hopefully, Cavill's Superman will return someday.

He brought Zod into Smallville. Even that town's damage was his fault. This movie was far too cynical.

He made a mistake, beut because he was driven by anger at that moment, it was justified, Zod messed with his mother. The later he cares about civilians, as he tells them to take refuge.

It’s was a pretentious, dour, and tone death that was obviously not made out to make a start to an extend universe franchise out but did because they stab themselves on the foot on that one
