I appreciate that you say MU and ETH should be able to set up and play out from defence in a more up to date and effective way, but I am more cautious about whether it is actually feasible with the available players (given injury has removed the most press resistant and ball progressing defenders). As I don't accept that ETH is a rubbish coach (last season is evidence alone that he is up to the job in England), I accept that like Ollie and Rangnick he has looked at trying to play a higher line and play out from the back with the available players and realised it can't be done. There is a consistent line in these issues that belies the argument that it can be done with the available players. It also explains why ETH was so keen to get defenders in during all of his transfer windows. He knows the limitations the current squad has. That this couldn't be done reflects the poison pill of huge wages for many players, especially under FFP. I have little doubt that ETH will look to use Onana in much the way you argue for - that's why he was brought in. Onana has looked increasingly good this season and I think we will see benefits next season with some different personnel, if they can be brought in.

This would work if we would play with a high line defence but we don't have such defenders except for licha and dalot maybe. United should sign todibo and branthwaite and play licha with todibo and branthwaite with kambwala. I think with these defence pairings, this tactic would work.

This is what Ten Hag wants to do, but you cannot do this with Evans, Maguire, Varane, Casemiro. We need defenders who are more comfortable on the ball.

I think this is why EtH so desperately wanted a ball-playing CB in the last summer: Kim Min Jae, Pavard, Todibo, etc. Martinez needs a partner that is just as comfortable playing the ball as he is, and then we'll see the best out of Onana's ball playing

Harry Maguire is a good ball playing centre back. McTominay doesn’t play in the midfield line, plays further up. Should be able to do this with Mainoo and Amrabat, as well as Varane and Maguire at CB

@@anigerianninja4577 Long passing/ switches of play are different from short passing/ line breaking passes. Maguire is good at going long. Martinez is pretty much world class at breaking the lines and he can play long as well.

I Don't think that maguire is good enough for a setup in which we build from the back Reason being 1st he can't play a high line due to pace 2nd his only good quality on the ball is switching the play and not even a good direct ball player forward to create a chance and 3rd he isn't clever enough and is very readable bcuz he's not press resistant and isn't calm in any sense

Without Shaw and Martinez United's build up doesn't exist. Onana simply has nobody to pass the ball to. All other defenders are terrible on the ball

It’s horrible because of the shape and lack of positional rotations. They aren’t horrible in possession at all. Varane and Maguire are more than capable of playing out as are Mainoo and Dalot. The issue is the managers build up strategy

Looks like a great idea on paper at least, but Ten Hag didn't get the momentum at the start of this season, to be able to take that risk, and chose to be pragmatic as he himself called it.

No he just hasn’t got the confidence or tactical set up to do it. Spurs, Villa and Brighton have all implemented their style of play with less than ideal squads

What you are saying lacks depth of understanding the situation Tan Hag is dealing with. Can you even see the midfielders he has only Kobbie Mainoo is worth mentioning for the future the rest needs to go. Look at his defense you cant play a high line with that you will be destroyed. Stop this United next manager nonsense Tan Hag has done way better than Arteta 's first season both on his first season and now and Arsenal kept him and look at what he is doing now. Tan Hag is very much capable of playing that brand of football he did it at Ajax.

This idea is not far from what ETH has in mind ..unfortunately its currently not practical for it needs players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and press resistant. Onana cant become extra man at the middle third when the game is fully transitional in nature. He would be frequently caught out of position frequently.

He does have the players. He has Mainoo and Amrabat in CM, Varane and Maguire at CB as well Dalot at right back. Alongside Onana in goal

ETH doesn't have this in mind at all, he has no clear patterns of play in his system at this point

Yes we do. Spurs were playing out from the back effectively with Emerson and Davies at CB. It’s Ten Hag’s system which is the issue

@@danielca3 yes it is Ten Hag’s system becahse he has had the team for 2 seasons now. He should be able to set up a compact defensive unit and control possession against Everton and Luton

@@AtlantisFootballDavies and Emerson are way better at their system than Maguire and lindelof, also you can’t tell spurs would be playing their high line with lindelof at LB cuz we haven’t got a LB now, if they do they’d get absolutely destroyed by every other team. Injuries need to be addressed first before manager and also the players

@@avinashmadhavan8304 Bruno plays mostly on the left and Madison plays mostly on the right and with Amrabat/Casemiro/Mainoo on defensive midfield as a single pivot, United would have had a pretty solid midfield especially against mid to lower table teams.

Man United needs to get rid of Onana. He’s a deadwood. If a shot doesn’t hit him directly he doesn’t save it. Every time he dives to save a low shot, Onana dives in a slow motion. This guy costed us three champions league games from winning position. I will never forgive him for those champions league games. He costed directly 9 points.

@AtlantisFootball one the many reasons I don't see ten hag taking us back to glory days..no good defensive set Up,he's just riding on vibes it's not just about not having players injury free it's about what they do on the pitch when they're not and when they are.there shouldn't be much difference if the manager is well vast but the dip in quality is usually too obvious..we see top managers like pep and klopp losing their go to men but even at such the gap is usually closed down enough to go through games without having to lose their style of play..ten hag is horrible at tactical play and that's all he talks about which is hilarious
