Greenhouse Build Series 4 - Cedar Vents & Door

How to build a post & beam greenhouse vent and door. In this video we complete the polycarbonate glazing and add the cedar strips. The triangular glazing is added to the gable ends of the post and beam greenhouse and a thermostat controlled aluminum louvered fan is installed. Custom cedar vents are cut, assembled, and stained. A cedar vent is installed in the front gable end of the greenhouse. A cedar door is installed and polycarbonate glazing is cut and installed. Two additional cedar louver vents are installed in the lower sidewalls to add more ventilation. This is the fourth instalment of the detailed greenhouse build series. And Ryan takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build a shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.

I ended up on your channel because I was viewing greenhouse builds because that is my next project. Sadly yours is way beyond my skill level but it was a joy to watch!

Another really interesting video! Really fun to see Marilyn join in as well, you both look so happy to work together on the project, even if you are working mostly on it. The result is so fantastic, it is not just a greenhouse, its a real house. So well made and again, I get so many tips and ideas which I hope I can use this coming spring and summer for my own projects. Can't wait to see next video, will be fun! 😃

My favorite project of yours so far. Overhang would be a great place for solar panels for going off grid and powering automation (ventilation, irrigation, soil and water sensors, etc)

One thing you may want to think about is adding flashing on the bottom side of the glazing panels in the gables. The moisture will wick up behind the panels and sit there and eventually rot the wood. Anyway, great build, loving the details.

Hi Kent, we about to make raised garden beds, changing a slope to a retaining wall in the shape of raised garden beds, where you can walk between retaining wall(s)/garden beds. What modifications you suggest to have to your garden walls to be also as a retaining wall? The wall should not exceed 4’ tall.

Very nice thank you, I was wanting to ask you a question about Aircrete, I didn't think u would get it from 3 yrs ago on your Aircrete videos so I'm asking here on this newer video. I Would love to know if you could tell me of a safe Aircrete recipe I could use to make planters and candle containers that would be lightweight and safe to be in my home? Thank you

Very interesting series. The fan has louvers that open and close, but the lower air intake vents do not. What are you going to do for the two lower air intakes in cold weather when you're extending growing season or trying to get a head start?

Thanks! I'm mulling over some ideas with that. I'll do a follow up video and cover that. I did buy one of those cylinders that's temperature sensitive to open a louver. I'll maybe try to incorporate that into a door mechanism.

Hi, thanks again for the video details! I’m getting more confident I might be able to pull this off myself! Question though: I heard with this video, you’re using j-channels for top and bottom on the triangular sheets with the bottom having weep holes. Did you do that with all the sheets you put up? I found a tape that some are using to cover the top and bottom tape has holes in it. Do you find just using j-channels will be enough without the tape?

You can use the tape or the J channel. I don't think you would need both.

Hi Kent, I’m looking to use those panels on a greenhouse myself. Does the moisture evaporate inside the bottom edges of the plastic well?

Is there a reason you have the door swinging inwards instead of out?

No particular reason. It could be installed either way.

Fair enough. I always figure doors swinging out give more floor space and interfere with the use of the space less, but run the risk of being blocked by snow (depending on location). The greenhouse looks great and I might build a similar one, so I was wondering whether there was a practical reason to have it inwards that I wasn't aware of.

For a small spce like the greenhouse I would have made the door to open outwards too. You have some expensive real estate inside, use the most of it.

Wow awesome job. I'm curious why you wouldn't use screen rather than hardware cloth to prevent insects from invading your palatial greenhouse. Do you have insects up north? I'm in South Carolina so just imagine. LOL
