How to build a post & beam greenhouse. In this video I start work on making the roof rafters. I cut a pattern of the rafter shape and copied it on western red cedar 2x6 blanks. After cutting and staining these rafters they have a birds mouth notch cut and then they are installed on the roof between the North-South 6x6 beams and the 2x8 ridge beam. Then 2x4 and 2x6 blocking is added between the rafters to add stability to the roof structure. Then I begin cutting the twin wall clear UV protected polycarbonate panels and screw them to the wall studs with roofing screws. Then the glazing is cut and installed on the roof. A custom made ladder is used to lay over the roof to then add the ridge cap. We also make a door from cedar that will support two polycarbonate panels after it is installed in the next episode. This is the third instalment of the detailed greenhouse build series. I have a 14 page greenhouse plan that's available at the link below.

That is one classy greenhouse. Just finished my 3rd polycarbonate greenhouse for growing Orchids, about 10 years ago. That is the toughest material man made. We had an f-1 tornado took 6 panels off out of 12, found all but 1 scattered about a mile through the woods behind the house, all reusable mostly. Has never yellowed and and you can walk on it between the roof trusses. Wont burn, and you can cut very easily with common saws.

I learned from another KZfaqr (Justin Depew) that made a dust collection system with polycarbonate that silicon doesn't adhere to polycarbonate very well, he found a product called Sik-A-Sil which looks and acts like silicon designed for polycarbonate and it did the job. So far I haven't had opportunity to try this product/material myself, but I have kept it close to the front of my mind, and have let others kw about it in the meanwhile. Great work on that very classy greenhouse! I am envious!👍🤙

Great craftsmanship and attention to detail. One thing I’ve learned is to have a table or stand near my work area to place my tools. Hey I am enjoying watching your videos about this green house so much! I wonder if this type of framing is suitable for a tiny home, I wonder how you would insulate a structure like this best. The only downside is, how to do so without enclosing the framing. I'm building a greenhouse as well. I ended up buying twin wall polycarbonate sheets that are 2 ft by 8 ft long. I was planning on framing the greenhouse with studs 24-in on center. The installation instructions for the panels say not to drill within one and a half inches of the edges. This doesn't leave much room where two panels would connect on the stud. Do you have any idea on how to install these panels? I was thinking h connectors and then screw the h connectors into the studs. Thank you for your videos.

Great detail! I like the looks of the timber frame construction and would like to utilize this design for repurposed old farmhouse windows instead of polycarbonate on the walls. My question has to do with all of the wall studs, are they necessary for structural integrity since you're utilizing the larger timber frame construction? I would like to omit approximately 50% of them, putting them on 32" centers to accommodate my farmhouse windows. Do you believe there would be any issue doing that?
@MANaboutTOOLS

The studs do add some support to the 6x6 beams but, I think your spacing would be okay.

When I saw your greenhouse build, I knew it was the one my wife and I wanted to build. We are super excited, and this morning I downloaded the plans and cut sheet. It is possible, I have not yet found the dimensional cut sheet for the polycarbonate glazing. If there is one, please direct me to its location. We are planning on upscaling the plan, perhaps to 10x24, or 12 x 20, depending on the roof glazing dimension. In the videos, it appeared you were cutting both length and width for the roof. If the roof panels are a full 8' long, we would have to just extend the length of the greenhouse, whereas if they were cut, we could extend the width, too. Please advise, and thanks for putting together such a quality video series and greenhouse plan.
@MANaboutTOOLS
@MANaboutTOOLS Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your support. I don't have a polycarbonate sheet cut list. I think it might be better to take a measurement and cut each sheet as you go along. Also, with my rafter spacing, I had to trim a bit off each sheet lengthwise to allow for the gap required for the H channel. If I was going to do this again I would space my rafters a bit further apart so I would not need to do this. But, that also can mess up the design and the standards for spacing we are all used to. So... just keep that in mind. I don't know what is really the best way to handle that. Cheers, Kent

@GreerGary Жыл бұрын
@@MANaboutTOOLS ok, thanks for the reply, Kent. Do you have a link for the twin face polycarbonate panels? I saw them on Amazon for about $169/sheet, but found a vender as low as $99/sheet elsewhere. I just want the UV secure ones like you used. Thanks again!

I saw a comment where someone asked about the polycarbonate but with there being so many version and sizes can you recommend some specifics on the polycarbonate, I.E, what millimeter size, does yours have a hollow channels/combs? there's a glaze on yours too, did you chose a glazing with a certain amount of UV or sunlight protection? There's so many online choices for this stuff and very few if none available in local stores to put your hands on. Any details are appreciated, its a great project.

This was a recommendation from my supplier. I guess the idea is that metal, being a conductor, would heat up to possibly damaging temperatures on a very hot, sunny day. And, the metal ridge cap (in my case) is a large surface area and would be lying on top of the polycarbonate.
