I do not represent any of the fire depts you see here. I was in the area when I saw the first truck and followed to see this. My personal feeling is everyone here did an excellent job.
THERE WAS A CLOSER HYDRANT TO THE LEFT, THAT WAS NEVER CAPTURED ON VIDEO!!!!

i live in manalapan and was there these guys did a great job saving this building, what you didnt see is the hydrant was just to the left of the building and was hit imediatly, also the front of the units are a covered pourch that was not invoulved in fire. thats where the firemen were, they only used the masterstream after the remaining roof came in to protect their men to get out. they saved all four units on the rear and the bottom two in front only had water damage.

This fire took place in Manalapan NJ Covered Bridge, 55 and over community. These guys are all volunteer. The initial alarm transmitted to Gordon's Corner FD. (red/white apparatus) with Robertsville FD, Marlboro NJ (yellow engine). Most of us have 2nd or 3rd engines lay in. If I'm correct, they hit a hydrant on opposite side. Not a fan of how aerial devices were utilized/set up nor members running around with no gear. It's all about who's in command.

...who's in charge, that might have been part of the problem, lots of white hats walking around, hard to tell who's fire it was. It just looked like engines and trucks started coming in willie nillie with no actual direction.

Thanks for the backstory / info. Gives a better perspective. I work for a large volunteer dept and understand that the first 5-10 minutes will make the next 5-10 hours. Volunteer or career, nobody's perfect. My hope is they have used this video to train and correct those items that are unsafe or unproductive.

Engineers often have their gear handy or wear the pants and boots. Their job description is to help flake out the hoses from their engine and engage the pump to flow water then to moniter the engine and adjust pressures as needed. Yes the area where they generally work is smoke free or minimal smoke environment. This means the risks don't warrant the expense and time involved to gear up fully. if conditions change and the need to bunker up with BA it can be done quickly under a minute.

These guys did a great job. The major challenge is with the Chief about how to attack, where to position engines and trucks, anticipating the fire's movements, where to stage units, and what units to send home. The firefighters drill on what to do so it becomes automatic. I've been in the Chief's shoes; it is exciting and stressful.

i have nothing but respect for manalapan and all the other responding companies that day, they did a great job saving all four rear units , the two bottom in front only had water damage, and only one unit on top had heavy fire damage, i dont know many companies that would have even went i in with such heavy fire load. i am 74 years old now and wish i had interacted more with companies like these while i was still active

I've been in around the fire service all of my life, ending it as an engine LT, with an LOD injury. nice aggressive interior attack, but, all of the apparatus passed a hydrant coming in, the ladder crew finally had to hand-jack the LDH back to it. hoping that there was a hydrant to the left out of sight, & hopefully around back. And chiefs without helmets/full gear is a poor example to younger firefighters, they are to educate, pass on fireground knowledge and discilpline. enough fire for all!

This must by SOP for N.J. Dept's working fires, have all your engines pass a water source and hope the 2 1000 or 1500 gals. Engines will put it out or hope the Ladder truck responds and tags a Hydrant.. Thank God I live in Upstate N.Y.

As for first in engine passing the hydrant, that first in engine uses its tank to conduct initial attack then second due engine catches the hydrant and puts down the supply line. It is too bad that they were not able to film the entire time of the incident. And yes if one is reporting to a fire then one should have full turn outs on

The same thing happened at the complex I lived in about 15 yrs back. Lightning struck the building a couple away from mine. The way it was handled was almost identical to this. Fire personnel went in both to search for victims and to fight the fire from inside. And an aerial truck sent a fairly fine spray of water down onto the worst of the fire in the roof/attic. I heard the latter was to keep from driving the fire down into the building. Great video! Not so great memories!

The Chief is the Incident Commander. He's supposed to arrive first, and coordinate interior attack, where the hydrant goes, etc. The list goes on. He's responsible to watch the fire from the exterior, man communications and responsible for the whole team. If someone calls a mayday, he's supposed to know and coordinate how to get one out. A fire chief vehicle becomes a command post at any fire incident. Look into Incident Command. Very interesting stuff. A chief holds lots of responsibility.

First truck on the scene had a hose at the front door in one minute, very fast. Then it takes 4 more minutes to pressurize the hose and start fighting the fire. 5 minutes is a lifetime for a fire. They need to build all fire trucks with ready to go water cannons, you pull up and the driver can fight the fire sitting in his driver seat until the rest of the crew is ready to go.

You don't want apparatus driving over charged supply lines. and yes, they are probably volunteers who don't see this type of fire every day. that's the point: The whole video I asked myself why the hell they need so much time to build it up and operate it. We set up our Aerial Ladders (have three Aerials at our station, each one with a 100ft ladder), extend the ladder to full length and turn it by 90° within one minute... and here they didn't manage to get that done by more than 6 minutes...

yes the Fire Chief or immediate commanding officer and the Safety Officer are responsible for firefighters. they make all of the decisions concerning fire. The Safety Officer determines what is safe to do and what is not and the Fire Chief decides who does what. Captains and Lieutenants are responsible for their company's individual firefighter groups. at least that is what I was taught during our orientation night. And if I may say that is a very nice rescue truck.

Granted I wasn't on scene, and I know I'm going to get commented on. Some good, probably some bad. Two engine companies arrive, and neither one tags the hydrant. The argument about running over a supply line, you can move the supply line to the side and make room for other apparatus. And I don't mean the side closest to the building, that would have hindered the truck company, and again, just asking and I'm sure I'll be informed, why didn't the truck company lay in, instead of hand jack. Does EVERONE have to be in front of the building.

Not trying to point out what these guys did right and what they did wrong. I obviously wasn't there.I'm just curious as to why they immediately went interior with that amount of fire showing. I think I would've put the deck gun on it on arrival or at least hit it with a 2 1/2 from the yard. Knock down the bulk of the fire to keep it from spreading to the next building then move interior and mop up.

I agree, this looks like a good fire for a transitional attack. 2 1/2" handline from the ground to darken it down for 20-30 seconds. That volume of fire makes sense to hit it quick in my opinion. That said I don't know the building, but as a full time company officer with 19 years experience my first thought was transitional attack to not delay putting water down.

Since a fire grows as the chimney effect takes over with all the heat rising, why don't the snorkel trucks start with a mist over the entire fire area. I know that heavy amounts of water on a roof can cause collapsing... which is totally stupid when the crews are working inside... but can't you cool down the air above a fire and cut down on the up draft?

As a retired Deputy chief of a larger paid dept. I can easily state that when a real fire company sees that much fire already venting, they would certainly know that there will be the need for a large volume of water which cannot be carried on the pumpers water tanks. The first due chief spends more time getting ready to look pretty for the cameras than doing a 360 size-up and personnally checking that all occupants are out.

Lightning can do a lot of damage. A house near me got struck last year. It caught fire on the second floor but the lightning travelled through the copper piping to the boiler on the first floor and blew it up, causing flooding. So you had a raging fire on the second floor and a flood of biblical proportions on the first. Crazy stuff.

@@anthonycatsoris7552 I'd love to but at 60 years old I bet no one would take me. Anthony the powers of observation are pretty strong. you can learn a whole lot about fires just by watching the way many FD's fight them and many of them are inept and need additional training. Want to kill a fire? Get water on it ASAP. Yeah do your 360 around the building but GET WATER ON IT quickly! It's really THAT simple, fires burn with wood and other types of fuel, WATER puts them out so get to it! I will say many departments are quite fine and do a great job I am not in any way putting down any FD's just saying from what I have observed over literally thousands of views of fire fighting.

Clearly these guys & gals are volunteers. Watching about half way thru the video you will see what appears to be bottle rockets or fireworks of some other sorts. They could have been aerosol cans, but there were a lot of them. This goes to show the hidden dangers these guys are up against. Imagine somebody stockpiling fireworks for a bottle rocket war & not even thanking about the consequences. You can see how disastrous this could have turned out to be. Lots of comments slamming these guys. The fire chief was there before the first engine arrived. He took command & was directing equipment as it came in. Everyone expects a 1 minute response time & an ability for full attack on the fire after 2 minutes. Wake up people. This was a large dangerous fire that was handled pretty good considering what was going on. Give these guys & gals a break, must of them lived & worked quite away from where this fire was.

I don't know much about fighting a fire. I was just there at the right time depending how you look at it. I applaud anyone who has the nerve to fight a fire. Especially for free. Cause I'm not so sure I would even want to. Thanks for watching and commenting though.

I believe lighting was the cause. 10 mins before this fire, the worst rain and lightning storm I ever seen in New Jersey came blowing through.

Easy boys, easy. 5 Nice fire engines but they are not effectieve. It took 5 minits before the first attack. The ladder engine so slowly

@Joe Bien You are so correct, I have said this before. Those seconds waiting for everything to be perfect with the firefighters helmets and enough water supply the building is gone. You don't need to be fully dressed to use an aerial ladder. Hit the fire with the water you have while the other guys hook up water lines and get dressed.

I'm not trying to bash the FD's involve but i have to agree with E4382 that one of those first due company's should of grabbed the plug, i'm sure there is gonna be lots of water needed to get a control time.

It's funny seeing people talk smack and who would of done this or how they would have done that and what's right and what's wrong. First off look at the real picture the homeowners made it out safe and every firefighter made it home safe. Four apartment s are done and the other 4 are good. Stop the judging, if people can do a better job or bring experience to the table then come on down and fill out an application and join the Volunteer Co. People are so quick to shoot others down and judge.

So stupid to run the hose back to the hydrant. Takes too long, too much energy! Just hit the hydrant on the way in. Five trucks show up and then they lay a line to the hydrant.

Just for the record the guy everyone is saying is the chief cause they saw him getting the gear on by the chiefs truck , was NOT the chief that fire fighter was coming home from work at the time of the fire and used the spare chiefs gear that was in the back of the truck
