Gloucester Docks fills with Mud

Historically Gloucester Docks fills up with mud from the nearby River Severn. For 80 years up until the year 2000 this mud was removed by a bucket dredger. Nowadays several methods have been tried but none as successful as the bucket dredger. This year is proving to be disastrous with the dock basin full of mud and vessels stopped from entering the docks.

Most of my family have worked on this canal they would turn in their graves if they could see the state of the g&s canal today very sad end of an era! Thanks for the video chris😊

Problem is crt haven't got any money. The biggest issue is when the flower mill at Tewkesbury closed the barges have not kept the partings clear down to Gloucester hence the build up of silt coming into the docks. Crt response at the meeting was we are learning from our mistakes

Brilliant explanation. CRT have been delinquent in managing Gloucester Docks. We were there in our narrowboat 2 years ago and the mud was within 4 feet of the surface where the pontoons are, so the lack of dredging is not just last year.

Bob Green, the former dredging foreman, Cyril Nash, the section Inspector in charge of the Docks must be turning in their graves. Does anyone remember them?

The G&S is one of the best canals. The remainder of the system is woeful. Here on the Erewash a sunken boat was reported 4 months ago and is still there. As to when it was last dredged is anyone's guess
