Jimmy Cage and Deniz the Buddymeister review MANICHITRATHAZHU
India 1993
Directed by Fazil
Starring Mohanlal and Shobana
Outro Music © Deniz the Buddymeister
► Twitter: / thebuddymeister
In German we’d say:
MANICHITRATHAZHU gilt als einer der besten Filme der malaiischen Filmindustrie, daher ist es umso bedauerlicher, dass wir ihn nur ganz nett fanden. Etwas zu unpersönlich, keine sonderlich tiefgehenden Charaktere und Entwicklungen und zu wenig kreative Kraft lassen ihn, vor allem im Vergleich zu den Klassikern, die wir bisher gesehen haben, ins Hintertreffen geraten.
#Manichitrathazhu #Mohanlal #Shobana

Nepotism for once worked right. Malayalam cinema got a gem. In fact he changed malayalam cinema. His insistence on not having fans associations, his insistence on valuing good script over larger than life roles etc. Thank god for Fahadh Fazil. I was fed up with the initial days of Prithviraj and Dulquer. "Fans" were trying to form two factions just like Mamooty and Mohanlal. Thank God 🙏🏻

Did you find the hidden sexual tension, one of the reason why Ganga is pushed towards the lore of the house and Nagavalli. Nakulan always busy with work and not even responding to Gangas advancement eventhough being a newly wedded couple. She has to find respite in books and lore.
@johnconnor3246

I wouldn't classify it was a sexual tension but rather as a longing for a more poetic / romantic relationship. It's well captured in the song ' varuvanillarume vijayanamam veedhiyil...'

I've watched your reviews long enough that i knew what the opening sketch would be about. That burn about 'gold medal from america' was classic though. On a serious note, This vedio shows the true value of an honest outside perspective of a regional film. It let's us see the movie in a different light. When you guys say how you missed something in the movie because of the cultural barrier, we realize how much of the value we ascribe to the movie is due to it's nostalgia and cultural factors. I hope you know that your work is important

10/10 and an evergreen movie in malayalam. I saw this movie when i was in high school... All this long years, anytime i watch this movie, i feel like i am watching first and wanted always again when it is over. It is not typical a horror movie at all, it is about a girl ( Ganga)and separation from her parents in childhood caused her mentally sick, her grandmother who was taking care of her in childhood, later she forgot about her parents, and again the parents appear for take her back to their working city, the separation anxiety caused her enough damages in childhood, later same she faces the same from her grandmother and she completely lost her mind at that time and deep routed mental illness reveal. Her parents taken her to another city and treated her, she somewhat overcome all those ordeals and she married to Nakulan, his mother tells fascinating love stories and tragedies about Ramanathan and Nagavalli which related to their ancestral home which became their family share after many generations. She felt a empathy for Nagavalli and her tragic life, before she reaches into the village and their ancestral house, known to be haunted by Nagavalli... Ganga, keep asking stories related to the same again from the people who live there, she wishes to see the haunted room where believed that the soul of Nagavalli is locked. She suspects the story is just a fake and which holds people not to enter in those rooms, which may have treasures... So she wanted to check it directly, with the help of her husband's cousins she secretly gets the key to open the lock which locked after many tantric rituals. She opened the rooms where completely shut for many centuries, sbe found out that the story was true, she saw the picture of beautiful dancer Nagavalli and her dance costumes, ornaments, anklets etc. She also opened the window, which has a view that the lover of Nagavalli, Ramanathan lived. Also she saw the professor and writer Mahadevan enter that house, who is fiance of Alli, nakulan's cousin, who stays there temperorily for the convenience of his work. Slowly, the sickness in Ganga begins to show up, the empathy she had for Nagavalli, became to a level that her mind believes herself Nagavalli, and she started acting like Nagavalli, whenever she turns into Nagavalli, she thinks Mahadevan, the fiance of Alli is Ramanathan. Whenever Ganga turns into Nagavalli creates havoc in family without knowing even her husband. she even tried to kill Alli once. The disease in Ganga was never shown up for many years and Nakulan was totally unaware of she had such a mental disorder. Nakulan believed his another cousin, Sri Devi is mentally sick, and he convince her father and other relatives in the big joint family. Nakulan calls his close friend Sunny, who is a psychiatric and researcher in different kind of tantric rituals which how affects to treat people who seek tantric treatments considering mental sickness always a kind of evil possession. Upon Nakulan's invitation Sunny reaches, witnessing some unusual events as Nakulan explained, his investigation soon found that Sridevi is very normal and Ganga is the real patient. He founds out her childhood issues, sickness history, treatment and the level of her mental situation which completely taking over Nagavalli. When Ganga turns into Nagavalli believes Nakulan is the Villain, the old Lord of the province, Nakulan's ancestor who killed Ramanathan and Nagavalli.Ganga always fond of traditional rituals and stories about possession, haunted places, tantric remedies from the tales her Grandma told. So Sunny decided to experiment her the way she believes to do, as her mental sickness is a possession of Nagavalli and being Nagavalli she kills the Lord and she fulfilling her venegance and leaving Ganga's body etc. As a part of treatment he cope up the situation with a trantric scholar with his equipments and the ambience. After treatment and continuous hypnotic excersise Sunny cures Ganga. The movie later turned into a love story of Ganga and Nakulan, Nakulan was even ready for dying to save Ganga...

Being an ardent fan of Mammootty sir myself, Manichithrathazhu is one of my all time favorites in Malayalam. It's a little surprising that you couldn't enjoy it like how we did. But yes, the culture and nostalgia is so rooted, I do come to know now.

It's the true that movie doesn't focus much on the character development apart from that of shobana's and to some extent mohanlal's parts. The focus is more on the myths, superstitions and traditions of the land. It's again very much a movie made for keralites so I would never imagine any malayalee saying the movie is slow. There are also quite a lot of nuances that even the most careful observer misses out. Even after having watched the movie for more than 15 times, I couldn't really understand why sunny goes out of character (and tone of the movie) and sings when he locks up sridevi(vinaya prasad). The explanation director Fazil gives is that, the song is sung in the same tempo (raga rather) as the song 'oru murai vanthu parthaayo...' when sunny encounters nagavalli for the first time (in madampalli behind the locked doors), to incite a response from ganga.

Another recommendation😁: Oru Vadakkan Veeraghada(Directed by Hariharan, Penned by M.T and a stellar cast including Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Balan K nair, Captain Raju, Madhavi, Geetha etc) Malayalam's classic epic film based on the folklore (Vadakkan paaatukal) about Chekavar community(Almost like gladiators but not slaves) It's a must watch... The acting, music, lyrics, cinematography etc are just awesome.... Storyline line is one of the best you will ever see. That's a guarantee. The film was phenomenal because it told the POV of the character who was regarded by the people, as betrayer(Most famous betrayer as per kerala folk lore and still his name is being used to address someone, when they betray😅). The writer M.T Vasudevan Nair completely overturned the basic folklore and gave another POV of the story(Like in his other class novel works like Randaamoozham, the retelling of Indian epic Mahabarath in realistic diff POV way). The film was so good that, people forgot all other 20 something films based on the same story and characters. The action scenes and certain dialogues are a little dramatic. But we will not notice it, in the film's flow. The best historic film produced in Malayalam(Other good ones include Kalapani, Urumi etc), one of the best complex character.... Almost stoic like Karna(Mahabarath), sort of Jon Snow(GOT). It will be probably there in top 10 famous/great/influential malayalam films of all time. A must watch..... IDK whether the subtitles are available😕... It will be a little difficult for you , as Certain Storyline and stuffs are related to kalari(Martial arts) and there are diff house names and kerala histories/culture mentioned. If you know some info about it, it would be a better experience. It's Mammootty's most famous character. Anyway don't over hype🙏😬 Also try out Padmarajan's classics(Not all, but most of them) Sorry for the long para🙏😅 Anyway great review as usual.... Even though I have watched many of the movies you reviewed/reviews, I still enjoys your videos, just because of the passion you guys have. Keep going✌️

The answer is 8:18 . Yes you missed a lot of things, where the supernatural events like burning where secretly done Shobana herself. This was explained by Dr sunny in the movie itself. You all just missed some stuff, may be subtitles didnt do the justice. For a Malayalee this is the perfect movie, even after 30 years when its shown in tv channels people always watch this movie without changing the channel. As you said, you didnt understand many of the deep cultural things that was shown in this movie.

Hmm.. I guess you have to be born and bought up in Kerala to appreciate and enjoy the movie to it's fullest. I think event the younger malayali audience won't be able to connect with this movie as much as we 90's kids do :) For me, this movie is one of the rare one's from my childhood that I would still watch without getting bored :) And I am sure offbeat movies like this which appeared once in a while during that period primed the current malayali audience in the 25 - 40 age group to enjoy the fantastic new movies that are being made now. I would even say many of the young film makers creating these were also influenced by Manichitrathazh in their childhood/teenage :)

Enjoyed your review. It is great you are taking time to watch such movies. Kudos to you Jimmy and Budmeister! I could totally understand why you felt disconnected from Mannichitrathazhu. I loved the movie when I saw it back then but it is one of those movies that are sort of tailor made for a certain community and it does not translate well in other languages, especially the humour and cultural references (various rituals and customs). Once again, there were several remakes of this in other Indian languages but they were way off mark in comparison. Maybe if you live in Kerala for a few years and soak in the culture, you might get the hang of such movies. You are right- Shobhana's performance, the eerie background score and awkward events that take place are the ones that truly shine in this movie.

This is a fair review. It does have a strong rewatchability factor, but only the scenes where the mystery lies that is the Nagavali enigma. Other than that, it’s just noise to the point that the whole “Malayalam Chill” serves as a bane than a cool acceleration to build up to the climax of the film. But as far as actual relevant scenes are concerned, they stand out strong. For instance, in the scene when the entire gang catches a kathakali performance, Mohanlal kept looking back at Shobana , to find her smiling away in what seems to be her fascination to the performance, we could feel her psychosis scaling up in aggravation.

Knowing what I know about mental health, the ending is absolute stupidity. After the "therapy breakthrough ritual" I expect Shobhana to wake up the next day and continue to believe in her delusions. You need to go on a regiment of medicine atleast few years. And if you start the medicine, you don't need to do the fake ritual.

You may watch its remakes in other indian languages, then you may know the difference. Our movies were not (until last few years at least ) that much one genre oriented rather were a package of all possible genres (romcom, mystery, thriller, drama etc etc). It is typical too that even today the film should be at least 2. 30 hrs. The entertainment element stayed always primary, not much research gone in depth in lot of films (so you will find lot of half baked pseudoscientific pseudopsychiatry scenes). I always love watching this film. One thing you said is right, the film is celebrated as that of Lal and Fazil but with due respect to them the real performer and star of this film is Sobhana.

This is one of my favorite classic in Malayalam.. If it was shot in this era, they would definitely have avoided the unwanted comedy scenes and songs. The bgm by johnson master should give special mention. The bgm keep the mood of the film. However there are lot of scientific flaws and illogic sequence in this movie. Eg MPD or DID as it is called now is not treated like what we see in the movie. Nor it has any special abilities as described in the movie.. Dr Sunny is portrayed more like a psychologist than a psychiatrist ie a medical doctor. The movie also tries to whitewash and glorify the pseudo system of local black magic which is also highly religious...!! ( movie is based on a true incident happened in Kerala, but lot of cinematic liberty is used)

I suggest you not to review these types of Movies because it is heavily rooted to our culture and it is difficult to Understand each and every part of this Movie by you. This Movie is considered as one of the Biggest hits of Kerala and a Classic too. We never get bored Watching this Movie even after Watching it about 30 Times. It will be hard to understand if you can't understand what each Character is, what their believes are and what the dialogues between each Characters. I think no subtitles can provide full justice to the original Malayalam Dialogues and no Malayalee ever complain about the Length of this movie. It is not your problem. You must be a Malayalee or atleast an Indian to Fully Understand this Movie. For Malayalees this Movie is 20/10😁.I need a reply from you guys.

Which is better than not to watch at all. ;)

Kudos to both of you for reviewing this classic! Not everyone will watch this movie and relate to it, considering how different it is to other western movies. In Western movies, there is a standard character arc, character setting etc that incites audiences to relate to the character and feel for them. But in Indian movies (Indian culture in general), it's completely possible for a character to just sit in one place and experience a myriad of emotions and thoughts, without performing or being in any external situation. The whole focus is on the internal makeup of the character, rather than external situations dictating how the character behaves. Imagine watching a fly on the wall. It's just there. I have to disagree with you when you said this movie didn't feel timeless like the other classics. Each and every Malayalee loves this movie soo much, I can guarantee that as long as the language is being spoken, this movie will be spoken about. Every character (including the supporting roles like Nedumudi Venu, KPAC Lalitha etc) hit so close to home, the music is just enchanting, the dance is fantastic and the climax is satisfying to say the least. There are many subtle musical nuances in the penultimate song, where Mohanlal locks up Srividya in the room. And tonal changes are actually quite common in Indian movies, we don't really mind that. Overall, it's maybe not technically as brilliant as some other movies, but it will forever stay in the minds of people. And I have to end with the customary "Why don't you guys have enough subscribers already???" :P

As you observed, Manichitrathazhu is deeply rooted in Kerala culture and it is difficult for somebody outside Kerala to enjoy the movie in its entirety.. Even for us, the story and characters are confusing sometimes, but we like the movie a lot.. The movie is directed by 5 directors, with Mr.Fazil as the lead director. Kerala audience generally like slow paced movies and movies with tragic ending(30 years back and compared to viewers from other states) . You have to watch "Oru Vadakkan veeragatha" for sure. It is a period movie, a real life characters and depicts the Kerala martial arts Kalari(which is the mother of all martial arts). I am not a Mammootty fan, but like the way he acted in that movie.. It's a must watch.. "Thazhvaram" too is another thriller movie to watch.. I would suggest "Kilulkkam" which is released 3 years after Chitram.. Kilukkam is a non stop comedy...
